Description
Paris: Imp. Royale, 1837. First Edition.. Later marbled paper boards.. Good; rebacked in modern linen; recased; old inst. ink stamp on the first three leaves.. 8vo, 232 pp. + 16 lithographic plates with multiple coastal profiles. Charles X undertook his Algerian 'adventure' in 1830, thus embarking on what was to become a 15 year effort to subdue Algeria. Fighting prevailed throughout the interior of the country. By 1832 the resistance leadership fell to Abd-el-Kader who waged war against the French occupation for years. The manual issued by Bérard was an essential resource in support of the French military effort. The description of the ports, approaches, off shore islands, and navigation hazards were obviously of great help. It is unusual to find such manuals so lavishly illustrated.
