The 136 woodcuts "are close copies of the full set of blocks from the Giocondo edition of 1511 printed at Venice by Giovanni Tacuino. The copies were made for the first Duarntino edition (Venice, 1524) -- "Zoppino secured all of the 1524 blocks except one; that on leaf N1r is a recutting with the heads of the figures strangely enlarged" (Mortimer).

Description
v+402 pages with diagrams. Octavo (9" x 6 1/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine with black labels and original wrappers bound in. From the library of Jsames J Barrett. Volume I. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 6389) (Hagedorn: 36) First edition.Fiske's Chess Monthly, launched when he was just twenty five years of age, was an outstanding periodical when first published between 1857 and 1861, probably the best in the English language up to that time, and for a long time thereafter; (John Keeble wrote in The British Chess Magazine in November 1931, page 496, "it is safe to say that [Fiske's] magazine remains to this day the most interesting thing of the kind ever issued"), and, 160 years later, it is still an extraordinarily interesting read for chess history and literature devotees. The Problem Department by E B Cook. This was one of the first magazines published in America. It was started in 1857 and lasted until 1861. It was published at the height of Morphy's popularity and presence. This American magazine launched in the same year as the First American Congress in New York, where Paul Morphy triumphed over Louis Paulsen. It ran as far as the fifth month of the fifth year (like Chronicle), also in the old-style descriptive notation), and the first volume proudly bears the names of Morphy and Daniel Fiske, the secretary of the Congress. The respective input of the joint editors has since been the subject of some academic debate but in 1857 more pressing matters were being discussed, such as the ""lives of Great Chess Men"" Ponziani and Philidor (not to mention the not/so-famous Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lueneberg - who went under the chess pseudonym of Gustavus Selenenus and was an ancestor of Morphy's famous opera-victim), the soundness of the enpassant rule, and whether any New York player had the bottle to take on Morphy with only a pawn and move oddsJames J. Barrett wrote a few chess columns in the Buffalo area. In a chess magazine beginning on page 1 of the March 1948 Chess Review: he wrote a letter of complaint about the magazine's choice of front-cover photographs. He played a substantial role in Paul Morphy The Pride and Sorrow of Chess by David Lawson (New York, 1976), and in the Acknowledgments (page vii) Lawson wrote, "I wish particularly to express gratitude for the suggestions and generous help of James J. Barrett, with special reference to the selection, preparation, and proofreading of the games."Condition:Original wrappers bound in, lacks wrapper to number one, heal corner of title stained, some pages with old institutional embossed stamp, some occasional pencil notations else about very good.

13/05/1858. John Herschel was the son of famed astronomer William Herschel and a prominent scientist himself. He originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, named seven moons of Saturn and four moons of Uranus, and made many contributions to the science of photography. In 1858, the prestigious Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences awarded him membership for his contributions to science. Thomas Jefferson was a member as well.Autograph letter signed, May 13, 1858, to Mr. Vrolik, Secretary of the department of the Science of Math and Physicals at the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. ""Sir, I need sincerely say that I feel very highly honored by the notice which the Royal Academy of Sciences of Amsterdam has been pleased to take of my humble claims to scientific distinction, in inscribing my name in their list of associated members and I have to request that you will convey to the Academy at the first fitting occasion my best acknowledgments on the occasion. It is certainly in a high desire gratifying to me to find myself thus identified with a body so eminent and which has deserved so well of science.""I should have earlier acknowledged the recipient of this notice but that having been addressed to me vernally [what is vernally?] at ‘London' where I have not resided for the last four years. With this explanation I beg you to believe me..... JWH Herschel.""

Description
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1906. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Ver Beck, Frank (illustrated by).. First edition, INSCRIBED BY BOTH VER BECK AND CO-AUTHOR RION on dedication page "To our dear Will Roberts" (in VerBeck's hand). With an ANS by Ver Beck with an original sketch of a bear on stationary of the Editorial Rooms of the Literary Digest, 44-60 East 23rd Steet, New York City, laid in. On a folded sheet, Ver Beck in blue correcting pencil writes to his son's or daughter's family: "Dear Children, I sought and found sweet repose on your friendly couch last night after having robbed a man from Philadelphia. I'm off now to the (undecipherable) but peaceful heights on Hudson. Thank you! Thank you! FV 7 am" under which he has drawn one of his signature bears, hands clasped behind its back, smiling as it walks away. Charming, spontaneous thank-you note to his children with VerBeck imaging himself as his dear bear for an unplanned late night shut-eye at their apartment as he rushes out to catch the train upstate. The book has been rebacked, edges and corners are worn and covers soiled. Endpapers are missing and cloth tape reinforces spine internally.

Description
Oxford: Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1965. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Duodecimo size, 257 pp. Part of "The 'Lecture Notes' Series" published by Blackwell Scientific in the 1950s and 1960s, this work on Dermatology "is intended to be an introduction to dermatology for students and general practitioners. It deals chiefly with common diseases, and to a lesser extent with some conditions which are often a sign of systematized syndromes" (Preface). The author goes on: "The importance of the skin cannot be underestimated when it is considered that life is a continuous process of the interaction between the body and its environment, and that the skin surface is the medium through which most external stimuli are received". This volume is not for the faint of heart, as it is replete with both black and white and color illustrations showing various diseases of the skin - 110 illustrations total, 32 of which are in colour (according to the dust jacket). We found little information regarding the author, although he does seem to be a "Junior"; there is another Bethel Solomons listed online which, given the dates, may very well be his father; this Bethel Solomons (1885-1965) was also a doctor, as well as an international rugby player for Ireland. His father was an optician, Maurice Solomons (1832-1922), who interestingly had his practice mentioned in James Joyce's "Ulysses"; the family is one of the oldest continuous Jewish families in Ireland. (Info from Wikipedia.) ___DESCRIPTION: Green cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, plain endpapers, illustrated with both black and white and color photographs; pagination: (i-iv), v-viii, 1-249. Cream colored dust jacket has red lettering, a summary of the book on the front flap, publisher's ads for additional titles in the series on both the back panel and the back flap. ___CONDITION: Overall, this volume is fine condition with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright. We are grading as near fine due to some prior owner markings (he neatly stamped his name to the front free endpaper as well as the bottom of the text block) and one "ding" (a shallow puncture) to the spine which did go through the cloth. The unclipped dust jacket with the original price of 21s net is in very good condition overall, however we are grading as good only due to several condition issues: the ding referred to above is also on the spine of the DJ, there is overall minor soiling, some darkening to the spine, and minor overall edgewear; some closed tears and a small chip out of the top of the jacket where the front panel meets the spine; also, the prior owner made the same neat stamp of his name to the front of the dust jacket. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
