Description
1825. ALKEN, Henry. The National Sports of Great Britain. London: Printed for Thomas M'Lean, 1825. Royal octavo, 19th-century full red morocco, elaborately decorated spine and covers, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $5200.Second edition of this compendium of British sports, with 50 hand-colored engravings (different from those in the first edition) depicting hunting, angling, horse-racing, and other diversion, handsomely bound in full morocco-gilt.""Henry Alken was the premier sporting illustrator of his time. He worked in colored aquatint in a style akin to that of Rowlandson and the early George Cruikshank"" (Ray, 32). Alken's equestrian illustrations ""are the result of the most attentive observation during many years entirely devoted to the pleasures of the field"" (DNB). While this work has the same title as an 1821 folio by Alken, it is often regarded as a first edition since it contains different plates. These plates include: two plates of angling, six plates of horse racing, six of coursing, 10 of fox-hunting, and 12 of shooting, along with others of poaching and the baiting sports. Tooley 43. Prideaux, 309-10. Bookplate of Edward Motley Weld, a member of the prominent Weld family of Boston and founder of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), part of the United Nations.Plates bright, light scattered foxing and soiling to interior; joints expertly repaired. Beautifully bound.

Description
Kansas City, MO: The Faultless Starch Co, 1989. Fine in near fine box.. Modern facsimile edition of this collection of the 36 little promotional titles published by the Kansas City-based Faultless Starch Company, first published in 1889, an example of popular literacy tools in early Oklahoma and Texas. From classics such as "The Owl and the Pussycat" to original titles like "The Starch Ghosts," the 36-volume FAULTLESS STARCH LIBRARY had something for every young reader. In under-served regions like rural Texas and Oklahoma, these little books - which often incorporated plot points about the importance of using Faultless Starch - were not just delightful freebies for the young, but important literacy tools: "People have written us over the years saying they learned to read" with these books, notes Faultless on their order form for this facsimile edition. This collection was published to commemorate the 1989 Year of the Young Reader and the Oklahoma Land Run Centennial. A delightful recreation of the books that were so important to so many American children. 36 volumes. 5'' x 3''. Original pictorial wrappers, saddle-stapled. Illustrated and printed in single colors: brown, red, orange, blue, green, and pink. Each with 16 pages. With original order form for the facsimiles laid in. In original blue and red cardboard box, in the style of a Faultless Starch box. Box with a bit of bumping to corners. Booklets tight and clean.

New York: North American Congress on Latin America, 1970. 23p., stapled photocopied copy. This issue includes "From Mercantilism to Imperialism: The Argentine Case Part 1" by Ed Daniels, "Excerpts from a speech by John A. Hannah," illustrations, tables. This copy has been photocopied from the original newsletter. The information source for the Left in Latin America. Vol. IV, No. 4, July-August. The NACLA Newsletter, which became the Latin America & Empire Report in the early 1970s, was the primary source for Left-wing reportage on events and institutions affecting the people of Latin America, occasionally expanding coverage to the Mid-East, Southeast Asia and,of course, the Empire. Each issue, published monthly, is filled with lists, statistics, reading lists, tables, maps and other extremely useful information on the activities of the CIA, US and multinational corporations, banking institutions and military-police tactics throughout South and Central Americas, the islands and Mexico.
