Description
Paris: A. Blaizot, René Kieffer, [1909]. UNIQUE COPY, WITH ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR ILLUSTRATIONS. 258 x 185 mm. (10 x 7 1/4"). 67 pp. SPLENDID GARNET RED CRUSHED MOROCCO, EXUBERANTLY GILT AND ONLAID, BY CHAMBOLLE-DURU (stamp-signed in gilt on front doublure), covers framed by onlaid dark brown morocco strapwork with ornate rocaille gilt side ornaments, central panel with onlaid cornerpieces tooled with gilt latticework, raised bands, spine compartments with onlaid black frame tooled in gilt, a mandorla of garnet morocco at center, gilt lettering, DARK BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO DOUBLURES with intricate dentelle gilt frame, garnet silk free endleaves, all edges gilt. In a suede-lined chemise trimmed with matching garnet morocco and matching slipcase. WITH 37 ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS IN THE TEXT SIGNED BY EDMOND MALASSIS and dated 1913. Verso of front free endleaf with monogrammed engraved bookplate of Henry Blumenfeld-Sciama; front flyleaf with ex-libris of Jean-Charles Lissarrague. A little rubbing near the gutter at front hinge, otherwise A PRISTINE COPY. This is a unique copy of Samain's tale of a lovelorn, blue-eyed faun, illustrated with original watercolors and handsomely bound by a leading Parisian workshop. Symbolist writer Albert Samain (1858-1900) was best known for his poems, but also wrote several short stories contemplating love in its various forms--here we find the passionate but unrequited variety. Malassis' charming watercolors bring the gentle faun Hyalis touchingly to life. The text was printed as a joint venture between the publisher and bookseller Auguste Blaizot and the binder René Kieffer, in an edition of 100 copies with 10 color etchings and 44 woodcuts by Charles Picart le Doux. It seems from the bookplate on the front free endpaper that this special copy--with those illustrations replaced by original watercolors--was likely created for Henry Blumenfeld-Sciama, a wealthy dealer in peacock feathers (then much in demand for ladies' fashions), whose company had celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1912. Our volume was not bound by Kieffer, but by his contemporary René Chambolle, son of the co-founder of Chambolle-Duru. Trained by the elder Chambolle, who had worked under the great Léon Gruel, René took over the workshop after his father's death in 1898. In "Modern Bookbindings," Sarah Prideaux says of her contemporary, "Chambolle most worthily continues the traditions associated with the name of his father. . . . To him are confided the classics of former times, which he clothes in the styles appropriate to them, keeping to a simplicity of ornamentation which reveals great taste and feeling for composition." As Prideaux suggests, our volume does not reflect the radical shifts afoot in French binding decoration, but neither is it marked by simplicity; rather, in keeping with Prideaux's assessment, it has an appropriateness to the subject matter of the text, reflecting in its elaborate and exuberant decoration the passion of the ardent central character. Considering that our volume was probably bound in 1913 (the date on the watercolors) or early 1914, it would have been one of Chambolle's last works, as he was called to serve in the army at the outbreak of the Great War, and died of anthrax in 1915. This copy was later owned by the French bibliophile and pharmacist Jean-Charles Lissarrague (1916-2005) who founded the pioneering skin care line RoC..

Description
London: Gogmagog Press, 1983. Chambers 35. First edition of Cox's last collection of prints. Copy number 6 of only 12 sets printed in black, with each linocut individually titled and signed and dated by the artist/publisher. In a quarter-cloth solander box with cork lining, with printed label on the spine, by Gemma O'Connor, and monoprint covers on Japanese paper by Cox. The list of plates and notes are handwritten by John Craig. Chambers/Franklin comment: "Morris Cox in his eighty-first year produced this energetic series of twenty prints, brightly colored in flat tones from linocuts. . . . It is a profound work. . . . If the word means merely actors, he finds them on the stage of history; mankind as mummer playing whatever dominating, automatic, poetic or dominated part the world's destiny designed. This seems therefore to be his epilogue. With twelve sets completed and no gallery exhibiting him, few have seen what he has done..

Description
c. 1870s. Hardcover. Very Good+. 19th-century Brown family photograph album, with scenes from India, Australia, Scotland, and England. 155 vintage albumen print photographs (a few hand-colored) mounted on 27 album leaves, the majority displayed through window mounts and captioned in pencil, comprising: 136 cartes-de-visite (3-3/4 x 2-1/4 in.), 6 large format prints (approx. 7-1/4 x 9-1/2 in.), 9 cabinet card-sized prints (approx. 4 x 6 in.) and 5 smaller-sized prints (approx. 3-1/2 x 4-1/2 in.). 4to. ca. 1870s. Contemporary mid-19th century green pebbled morocco over beveled boards, covers tooled to a panel design with citron morocco onlay tooled in repeating interlocking rope pattern, a.e.g., metal clasp. Some scuffing to covers, photographs generally near fine, with just a few nicks or scratches. Provenance: Madeline Force Brown (gift inscription from Charles and Edith Hill, 21 October 1869, on first blank). Vintage photograph album from the last quarter of the 19th-century, with some 155 photographs of the Brown family and relatives, including surnames Hernderson, Ramsay, Callum, Brownell and many others. Evidently a large family with holdings in Scotland — the estates of Attadale and Dunach are pictured here — as well as connections in India and Australia. Nearly all of the photographs are captioned in pencil on the mount — two large-format photographs are group shots, titled "India," and some of the individual carte-de-visite and cabinet prints were photographed by Bourne and Shepherd, Calcutta (including one Walter Brown in costume as "'Masamiello,' Government House, Calcutta, 31st Dec. 1870.") Other photographers credited are Johnstone,O'Shannessy & Co., Melbourne, and Eliot & Fry, London. The Scottish landscape painter Horatio McCulloch is pictured here, and three cabinet card-sized photographs of a cricket match are found at the end of the album. A finely bound album, with interesting and visually rich content.

Description
1857. Three pages of retention copies of manuscript material. A two-page retention copy of a manuscript letter dated March 9, 1857 from Elisha Whittlesey (1783–1863), Comptroller for the U.S. Treasury Department, to T.L. Smith, Auditor of the Treasury, concerning financial allocations for the Utah Territory. A manuscript retention copy of the official act that provides for the appropriation is included with the letter (also in Whittlesey's hand) . Up to this date, the sum of $1,000 was allocated for the territory in the fiscal years 1854-55, 1855-56, and 1856-57. Officials in the territory requested more funding , so $1,327 was allocated. However, it would appear the Territory did not receive all the money it requested, and apparently the difference was personally covered by Brigham Young. Just a few months after this Act was adopted, the Mormon Rebellion began when President James Buchanan sent U.S. forces to the Utah Territory with a new governor to replace Brigham Young. And, just a few weeks after this letter is dated, Whittlesey was relieved of his duties. He was appointed by President Zachary Taylor as First Comptroller of the Treasury and served from May 31, 1849 to March 26, 1857, when he was removed by President James Buchanan. He was reappointed by President Abraham Lincoln on April 10, 1861 and served until his death in Washington, D.C. on January 7, 1863. In addition to his bureaucratic duties, Whittlesey was a politician. One of the founders of the Whig Party, he represented the state of Ohio in Congress from 1823 to 1838. "Sir, Herewith you will please find enclosed for your proper action, the copy of an Act (as certified today by Wm. Hunter Chief Clerk of the State Department) approved March 3, 1857; appropriating for the contingent expenses of Utah Territory applying for the Service of the fiscal year 1854-55, 1855-56 & 1856-57, $1, 327. 30/100 which is over and above the appropriations heretofore made of $1,000 for each of said fiscal years and subject, “to discharge such funds as the Accounting Offices may deem to have been necessarily expended by the Executive of said Territory for said year, &c. There was discharged in the account of Governor Brigham Young per Report 120.807, for the service of the fiscal year 1854-55 on account of expenditures charged over and above the appropriation as made for the service of the fiscal year 1854-55 - $407.30 and for the fiscal year 1855-56, per Report 123.815, for same reasons $420.00 making “ “ “ $827.30 To which add amount included in the appropriation for the service of the fiscal year 1856-57, and for which will not require action, now $500.00 Making the amount to appropriated, as aforesaid $1327.30 Mr. [John M.] Bernhisel delegate from Utah desires immediate action touching the sum above of $827 30/100 and discharged as mentioned. Most Sincerely Yours Elisha Whitney Comptroller." "Copy Utah “For contingent expenses of said Territory One thousand three hundred and Twenty Seven Dollars and thirty cents to discharge such sums as the Accounting Officers may deem to have been necessarily expended by the Executive of said Territory during the year Eighteen hundred and fifty-five, Eighteen hundred and fifty-six, and Eighteen hundred and fifty Seven” “Dept. of State March 9 1857” “A true copy of a portion of an act approved March 3, 1857, Entitled. An act making appropriations for the Legislative Executive and Judicial Expenses of government for the year ending the 30th of June 1858” “W. Hunter Chief Clerk” A true Copy of the original as referred by me this day to the Treasury Department." Comptrollers Officer March 9th 1857 Elisha Witlessly Comptroller.

Description
Mexico, D.F.: Propaganda y Anuncios S.A., 1939. Very good. 4 1/8" x 12", folded; opens to 23 7/8" x 18 3/8" (map area is 18 5/8" x 17 1/8"). Single sheet printed in multiple colors both sides. Very good: folded twice vertically, possibly as issued; some penciled notations in the margins by the large image of the hotel; a couple of tiny closed tears and one small separation at an intersection. This is a brochure for Monterrey's Hotel Ancira which opens into large, dazzling illustrated map of Mexico which depicts a portion of the Pan-American Highway. On the other side of the sheet is a street map of Monterrey measuring 11" x 8½". On the large map, the Pan-American highway stops furthest north are San Antonio and Del Rio, in Texas, with the furthest south in Tehuantepec. The map contains at least 15 drawings of people dressed in traditional costume. Larger cities are denoted by drawings of buildings and mountain ranges are depicted as well. The map's legend states that locations of hotels and gasoline are noted, but we find none. That said, there is a table of distances between cities at the bottom of the sheet that contains this information as well as whether locales had telephone or telegraph service, railroads or tourist camps. Although OCLC locates no copies, we think this is a variant of a brochure/map held by Princeton, with a title of "Mapa de Mexico y trazo de la Carretera Mexico-Laredo = Map of Mexico describing the Pan-American Highway," whereas the offered map is untitled. Vivid and viviacious. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers.
