Description
Flensburg: Verlag von Deutschlands Großloge II des I. O. G. T., 1905. First edition. Softcover. vg. Octavo. 8pp. Original artistic blue and white color washed paper wrappers with emblem and lettering in black on cover. Lecture on the relation of alcohol and art by Prof. Peter Behrens based on the research of Moebius, Kraepelin, Smith, and Delbrück. At the time Behrens was director of the School for Applied Art in Düsseldorf, influential member of the modernist movement at the turn of the century, and cofounder of the famous German Werkbund. When Behrens designed the AEG Turbine Factory in 1910 some of his assistants and students were Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Adolf Meyer. In his lecture Behrens takes a firm stand against alcohol consumption going as far as to claim that alcohol is most pronounced among artists and brilliant thinkers and that it is rare that such persons do not see their demise as a result of alcoholism. Behrens commits to wanting to be a contributor to the elevation of the human life and wishes to see that art is desired and relished by all people. He expresses his hope to live to see the fruits of the efforts of the anti-alcohol-movement in the next generation. This lecture was given at the IX. International Congress against Alcoholism on April 28, 1903 in Bremen, Germany. The back cover carries advertisements for a student performance entitled "Frei!" by Eva Trau and "Neujahrsmorgen!" by Dr. Kantorowicz. Wrappers and pages age-toned. Wrappers and interior in overall very good condition.
