Description
Frankfurt am Main: apud Georgium Coruinum, impensis Sigismundi Feyerabendij, 1579. SECOND EDITION, EXPANDED (1st ed. 1574). Hardcover. Fine. Bound in 18th c. parchment, either re-cased or a remboîtage, parchment lightly soiled, 2 short splits to the vellum, text block re-sewn, end-papers renewed, spine richly tooled in gold and with later label. The text is in very good condition, bound a bit tight, the first three leaves lightly soiled; scattered light soiling and a few trivial stains elsewhere in the text. Two headlines slightly shaved, 1 small nick in upper margin of final leaf; a couple of small holes; small nicks in the upper blank margin of a few leaves, short worm-trail at extreme upper edge of the opening leaves, far from the text. Two of the woodcuts -a lascivious monk trying to seduce a nun- have been modified by an early reader (in the first instance, the monk is given ass's ears, in the second, just a swirl above the characters' heads.). A printed album amicorum (a friendship album), illustrated with 165 full-page woodcuts (with some repeats) by the renowned Swiss-German artist Jost Amman (1539-1591). The text and woodcuts are printed in such a way that the blank space could be used by the owner's friends to add their names, arms, and sentiments. The lighthearted text, which functions as a sort of conduct book, consists of extracts from Henri Estienne's "Comicorum graecorum sententiae"(proverbs of the Greek comic writers), with the Greek followed by Latin translations by Estienne and Christian Egenolff. The woodcuts combine basic templates for coats-of-arms flanked by various figures: some of them personifications of the liberal arts, musicians, lovers, elegantly-dressed women, the aforementioned monk and nun, etc. The maxims are arranged by subject: Love, Art, Friendship, Drunkenness, Anger, Death, Old Age, Patience, etc. The book is a significant resource for the study of 16th c. fashion. "Whereas in the early days of album-keeping entries mostly consisted of signatures only, it became increasingly popular in the second half of the sixteenth century to add the coat of arms of the person making the entry. These coats of arms were usually executed by a professional artist... It seems, however, that some contributors preferred to reproduce their coats of arms themselves (perhaps in order to save paying the artist!); where this was the case they often used one of the models Feyerabend provided in his books, there described as 'offene Schilde'. These are woodcuts in which the escutcheon and crest have been left blank. These incomplete designs could be filled in with whatever coat of arms was required; some colour and a motto or a Classical quotation could also be added to the image, as well as a signature and the date." (O'Dell, Jost Amman and the "Album Amicorum" Drawings after Prints in Autograph Albums" in Print Quarterly, March 1992, Vol. 9, No. 1, pp. 31-36) The author and publisher identified young people, among whom the creation of friendship albums had become particularly popular, as their target audience. As Egenolff writes in the preface to his German edition: "It is customary to say the quality of a commodity corresponds to the nature of its buyer. Since today there is a need for everyone, especially those sent to universities to study, to make new acquaintances and form friendships with strangers, this has given rise to the Stammbücher, as they are called, though they might often more properly called 'Schädtbücher' [books causing mischief]. Many an honest man considers making use of such a Stammbuch or writing in those of others. To meet this need, this model 'Stammbuch' has been prepared by one of their fellow students at the suggestion of the honorable and distinguished Sigmund Feyerabend, bookseller at Frankfurt am Main, in the hope that whoever comes across it in future will find something suitable in it; indeed, will see himself in it as in the Socratic mirror, and will find what defects in himself he must improve. For though one does not know other men's dispositions, yet Horace's dictum 'Change but the name, and it is of yourself that the tale is told' will soon be found to apply to everyone. May this work, kind-hearted reader, not displease you."(translation by O'Dell) The first version of the book -which much more basic woodcuts, without figures- was first published as "Flores Hesperidum" in 1574. This expanded 1579 edition was also issued in German as "Stam[m] oder Gesellenbuch". The volume concludes with verse interpretations of the arms (shown in woodcut) of the dedicatee, the humanist poet and physician Johannes Posthius of Germersheim (1537-1597). See Rosenheim, "The album amicorum" in Archaeologia, v. 62, p. 251-308, esp. p. 254. About the artist: "Jost Amman was born in Zurich in 1539, the son of a noted scholar. Despite opting to train as an artisan, he maintained connections with humanist scholars throughout his career. Little is known of his early years or where he received his training, but by 1561 he had relocated to Nuremburg where he became one of northern Europe's most prolific printmakers and book illustrators of the late sixteenth century. "Amman may have trained in the workshop of Virgil Solis (1514-1562), whom Amman essentially replaced as the premier illustrator for Frankfurt publisher Sigmund Feyerabend (1528-1590). Solis had begun illustrations for a bible that would be published in 1564, and Amman may have been an apprentice tasked with cutting the woodblocks for Solis's drawings. Although he maintained his own workshop, Amman became essentially an employee of Feyerabend, one of the most productive publishers of the late sixteenth century. He provided Amman with a majority of his commissions as the two collaborated on at least fifty books. "Little is known of Amman's working methods beyond an anecdote from one of his pupils attesting to the master's prolific work as a draftsman. In addition to the illustrations, he designed other typographic elements in his books including ornamental borders, initial letters, tailpieces, and printer's marks. We know that Amman cut most of his own blocks, at least early on. Later in his career he likely would have overseen the translation of his drawings into woodblocks by others, and we are aware that he had several apprentices. Yet evidence of his financial difficulties raises the possibility that he continued to prepare many of his own blocks."(National Gallery of Art, "Jost Amman and Sixteenth-Century Woodcut Illustration", exhibition (2018)).

Description
Venice: In aedibus Manutianus, 1566 and, 1567. WITH THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF AQUILES ESTAÇO’S COMMENTARIES. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary limp vellum (soiled, minor losses to vellum, lacking ties). Internally very good copies with a minor worm-trail in the blank gutter. Two small wormholes in the text. Minor soiling, a few marginal damp-stains, one gathering lightly browned (in Tibullus). All three Aldine devices nicely colored in a contemporary hand. Edited by the Portuguese humanist Aquiles Estaço (1524-1581), known as “Achilles Statius”. He was the first Catullan scholar to note the disjunction between Catullus 2 and its last three verses (Catullus 2b): “et vero haec cum superioribus usquequaque non cohaerent.”(p. 20) “Achilles Statius (Aquiles Estaço) is a fundamental figure in the cultural landscape that characterized the papal city in the second half of the 1500s. Born in Valdiguera (Vidigueira) in 1524, he lived as a child in Parnambuco to follow his father, a career soldier, Upon his return to Portugal, he immersed himself in his studies under the aegis of prestigious teachers such as the grammarian and geographer João de Barros and the Latinist André de Resende. He completed his education in Coimbra with Azpilcueta and then in Paris and in Flanders, acquiring knowledge on the classics, poetry, and other fields that enabled him to absorb theology and interpret the sacred texts. He passed through Venice and Padua and finally settled in Rome where he had the opportunity to penetrate the cultural, religious and political life of the papal court… He was able to create in Rome a dense network of contacts in different fields, allowing him to experience up close the political, religious and cultural activities of the papal curia and the political and diplomatic actions carried out by the Lusitanian crown.”(Isabella Iannuzzi) “Statius began the study of the Latin poets as a preparation for translating the Psalms and other scriptural passages into Latin verse, for he wanted to be able to represent the variety of biblical poetry with an appropriate rhythmic and metrical diversity. In the course of his reading he made detailed notes on Tibullus, Vergil, Lucretius, and Horace, as well as Catullus; urged by his friends to publish his work, he decided to begin with Catullus (1566). A commentary of Tibullus appeared in 1567. Statius' commentaries on the other poets were never published… “Statius carried out his intention of writing sacred poetry in classical meters, for his paraphrases of the Psalms are to be found in a manuscript at the Biblioteca Vallicelliana (B 106), together with his Carmina sacra and Carmina profana. The poems contain little that is obviously Catullan, but they live up to the promise of metrical variety implied in the preface to the commentary on Catullus… “In his commentary Statius is principally interested in textual problems, but he also makes a number of literary observations, usually on the effectiveness of individual words or phrases in their context. He not only explicates Catullan usage with the usual range of Latin and Greek authors but also frequently refers to inscriptions. His commentary contains numerous references to specific manuscripts and often cites the interpretations and emendations of other humanists, many of whom were his friends and contemporaries. Among others, he mentions Angelus Colotius, Fulvius Ursinus, Jacobus Corbinellus, Petrus Victorius, and Antonius Augustinus. That he never mentions the work of Muretus suggests an antagonism or rivalry between the two scholars, at least on Statius' part.”(Gaiser, Catullus, CTC VII, p. 265) Catullus: "Catullus’ name and poetry are traditionally associated with the 'neoteric revolution'; indeed, they are the most important document of it. It is a revolution in literary taste but also a revolution in ethics. While at a time of acute crisis for the Republic the old moral and political values of the 'civitas' are crumbling, personal 'otium' becomes the attractive alternative to communal life, the space in which to devote oneself to culture, poetry, friendship, and love. The small universe of the individual, with its joys and dramas, is identified with the very horizon of existence, and literary activity no longer turns towards epic and tragedy, the genres that speak for the state and its values, but rather toward lyric, towards personal poetry, which is introverted and suitable for embracing and expressing the small events of private life. "[Catullus’ poetry] achieved a vast and immediate success among cultivated Latin readers. In particular, it exercised a profound influence upon the Augustan poets (with the exception of Horace). Not only the elegists, who regard Catullus as one of their most important literary ancestors, but also the Vergil of the 'Eclogues' and the Dido episode slip irresistibly into the language of Catullus when they combine erotic passion with refined diction and baroque style."(Conte) Tibullus: "[Tibullus’] style reveals at every point, and with extraordinary regularity, the effort made towards a writing of extreme care, in which simplicity itself is the laborious result of an artistic choice, or rather the visible sign of a trust in words and their expressive force, without the need for distortions or pathetic intensifications of the discourse. The limpidity of expression seems to be the product of immediacy; the effort of composition remains hidden beneath the smooth surface of an apparently spontaneous writing… The rhythm has a certain light, singable quality, a regular cadence, which often approaches the resonance of rhyme when, with the words distributed in a balanced way between the first and the second half of the pentameter, the sounds that end the second half of the verse echoes the end of the first. This form of expression exerts a conspicuous influence on the technique of the Ovidian couplet… "‘Terse and elegant’: thus described by Quintilian, who sees in him the classic of Roman elegiac poetry, Tibullus is already admired by the ancients for his style, which is simple and luminous, free and refined. The lexical purity, the fluid movement of the thoughts, harmoniously linked together and without the abrupt swerves of Propertius, the fine, delicate tones, often gently dreaming, the very economy of mythological learning, the light ironic smile-all these qualities give to his poetry the charm of stylistic maturity and expressive naturalness."(Conte).

Two important and generously illustrated botanical works produced by respected Linnaean correspondents at the Imperial Academy o
Description
St. Petersburg: Academia Scientiarum, 1739. Two important and generously illustrated botanical works produced by respected Linnaean correspondents at the Imperial Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg. Amman’s Stirpium rariorum contains useful descriptions of 285 plants from Eastern Europe and “Ruthenia” (now Ukraine), enhanced with 35 clear engravings. According to Hunt, Amman “made a notable contribution to Russian taxonomy under Peter the Great and his immediate successors; and was thus a precursor of Gmelin and Pallas” (Hunt 511). The plates are unsigned throughout, although a small engraving on the dedicatory leaf of Amman’s work is signed by P[hilipp] G[Georg] Mattarnovy (/Filip Jegorovitch, 1716-1742), a Swiss-Italian artist drawn to the St. Petersburg Academy. The engravings are here labeled in ink with alternative Latinate names, suggesting that an early reader attempted to apply Linnaeus’ new system to these species. Buxbaum’s Centuria I-V is one of the first publications to describe and illustrate such a substantial portion of the vegetation of eastern Europe and Asia Minor. In addition to constituting one of the first scientific works on the flora of Estonia, the Centuria also offers the first descriptions of plants along the coast of the Black Sea, Armenia, and Greece. Buxbaum accomplished much of his research while accompanying the imperial chancellor Count Romanzoff to Constantinople. The work would ultimately consist of five parts, which were issued separately between 1728-1740 (the entire set received two editions). The final two volumes of the Centuria were published posthumously by Johann Gmelin, which may account for their separate appearance here. The Swiss Amman (1707-1741), who studied under Herman Boerhaave at Leyden, was Curator of Hans Sloane’s natural history collection in London. In 1733 he was summoned to Russia to become a professor of botany at the Imperial Academy of Sciences at St. Petersburg. Buxbaum (1693-1730) was also a professor of botany in St. Petersburg, one of many Germans who made important contributions to the Imperial Academy. Both men corresponded with Linnaeus, even sending rare Russian specimens and seedlings to Sweden.. Large 4to. [26 x 20.5 cm], (6) ff., including one engraved vignette showing a garden scene, 210 pp., 1 blank, (7) ff. [the last an erratum], 35 consecutively numbered plates; note: plates xiv and xvi on a single folding leaf. [Bound with:]BUXBAUM, Johann Christian. Plantarum minus Cognitarum Centuria IV-V [including Appendix] complectens Plantas circa Byzantium & in Oriente Observatas. St. Petersburg, Typographia Academiae, 1733-40. Two (of five) volumes. (2) ff., 40 pp., 39 plates; (2) ff., 48 pp., 65 plates (in part V & appendix). Bound in contemporary vellum over boards, title inked on spine with trace of armorial shelf mark. Danish library stamp on title. Light marginal foxing throughout, minor worming on a few corners of Amman. Amman plates carefully labeled in ink with alternative, Linnaean plant names. Generally a wide-margined copy, (very) good.

I consider it important to highlight that in each of his achievements Liberti expresses himself as what he is: a great painter" (p. 14). ENGLISH AND SPANISH TEXTS. New York: Horace Liveright. Good. 1929. 5th printing. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [worn book, bumping and light fraying to cloth at all corners, small nick in cloth at right-hand edge of front cover, spine slightly turned, covers a little grubby; internally clean, hinges a little tender but still intact]. This first novel by Carman Barnes, based on her own experiences in various Southern boarding schools, was published when she was 16 ("just a schoolgirl herself") and helped make her into an overnight sensation. Before she hit nineteen, she had already published a second novel, collaborated on a stage adaptation of "Schoolgirl," and been whisked off to Hollywood under contract to Paramount as a writer -- and was soon (so the story went) tapped for potential movie-stardom as well. One news item, from early 1931, reported that she was ensconced in a hillside bungalow "writing her own story -- the story in which she will appear in the capacity of star.") For about ten minutes, she was even touted as "the next Clara Bow" (although that seems to have been just a part of the studio's campaign to keep the troublesome Miss Bow in line). In the end, however, her only on-screen appearance was in a brief dramatic scene in a promotional trailer made for a Paramount sales convention, and she never achieved a writing credit of any sort. When her contract expired after six months she was sent packing, with an L.A. Times columnist commenting rather ruefully that "one feels a trifle sorry for the girl herself in all this, since her adventure seems to be leading nowhere." On her way to Nowhere, though, she at least did exactly what many a frustrated writer did following an abortive Tinseltown experiences: she wrote a "Hollywood novel," "Mother, Be Careful!", published in 1932. After one more novel ("Young Woman," a "Schoolgirl" follow-up), she wasn't heard from again until coming out with one final book in 1946. .
