Description
1879. PARIS, Ministere de Travaux Publics. Album de statistique graphique. 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890-1891, 1892, 1893, 1895-1896. Each volume contains 12-26 colored plates of informational graphics, many folding. Folio, 330 x 255 mm., publisher's boards. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1879-1896. These splendid volumes were published by the French statistical bureau between 1870 and 1897, and are very much in the style established by Charles Josph Minard. On the outside they appear drab and undistinguished, but on the inside they are alive with a profusion of dazzling coloured charts. They have been called "the finest specimens of French graphic art in the century" (H.G. Funkhuser). All of the volumes are rare, and the series remains largely unknown. Some wear to a couple of bindings, and a few inoffensive library stamps, but otherwise sound.

Jewett City, CT: Reade Publishing Co, 1873. Cloth. Very Good. The uncommon 1873 1st --and probably only-- edition of this 1873 beauty guide/reference book meant for women exclusively. With chapter headings such as "How to Be Beautiful", "How to Dress", "Courtship and Marriage", "The Mother", "What Every Woman Must Have", etc., safe to say the book's target audience is the post-Civil War American woman. Solid and VG in its russet cloth, with decorative bordering and blindstamping at the panels and bright gilt-titling along the front panel and spine. Light soiling and creasing to the preliminaries, one closed tear at the front free endpaper. Square 12mo, charming and very presentable.

Description
An intricate little scene comprised of multiple layers of polished and textured paper. A young woman and a sea captain stand hand-in-hand in a clearing. A rifle is laid atop a large rock in the foreground. A rabbit and two birds lay nearby (perhaps having been shot). A small dog looks on while at water's edge. A myriad of greenery with a trellis flanks the border of the image while a large tree with intricate leaves creates the background. Beyond the tree is a soldier with saber in hand. To the sailor's left are evergreens, rock and a snow cap or rapid water flowing between the soldier and the couple. There is a third man lurking to the left (head lacking). The detail on this work is exceptional with individually applied leaves, pearls and ruffles and everything else to be seen. Matted and framed in 7 ¾" x 5 ¾ " gold frame. Few specks for cut work lacking.

"The author's design was to compare our limited monarchy with the greatest modern republic, not in order to disparage either, but to elucidate both to a popular audience of his countrymen (...) The subject has an intrinsic claim to attention. It embraces a variety of topics, both entertaining and important, and historical truths of immense practical value, concerning which the people are deeply interested and too often misled." --Preface, viii CONTENTS: Lecture One: Introductory Lecture Two: Provincial Institutions. Outline of American Constitution. Lecture Three: Elective Franchise. Legislative Assemblies. Lecture Four: The Executive Power. Lecture Five: Law-Religion. Lecture Six: Social Influence of Political Institutions. Peter Freeland Aiken [1799?-1877] was a Scottish advocate for some time, and later moved to Bristol, England. He was the author of The People's Charter, and Old England For Ever (1839) and War: Religiously, Morally and Historically Considered (1850).
