Description
[MORMONS]SMITH, ETHAN. View of the Hebrews Exhibiting the Destruction of Jerusalem; The Certain Restoration on Judah and Israel; the Present State of Judah and Israel; and An Address of the Prophet Isaiah Relative to Their Restoration. Poultney, VT: Smith & Shute, 1823. 8vo, 183pp with a few old stains, lacking terminal index leaf; full contemporary calf. First edition. This work, part of a sizable literature on the subject, argued that Native Americans were descended from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. What makes it of especial interest is that the work has notable similarities in content with the Book of Mormon, first published 1830. The Church of the Latter-day Saints itself produced a study that notes eighteen points of similarity with the Book of Mormon, and other authors such as Fawn Brodie have commented on similar parallels between these works. Brigham Young University produced a facsimile edition in 1996. Sabin 82538; Pilling 3655; Rosenbach 252.Provenance: Collection of Jay I. Kislak
