Description
London: Printed for the Author, and sold by J. Millan, 1765. FIRST EDITION. 213 x 129 mm. (8 3/8 x 5"). viii, 236 pp., [2] leaves (ads). Contemporary speckled calf, raised bands, spine with gilt rules, red morocco label, all edges sprinkled. Front pastedown with the bookplate of Everett D. Graff along with an early engraved armorial bookplate; front flyleaf with an illegible early ink stamp. Howes R-419; Sabin 72725. Binding with extremities a bit rubbed, but solid, unrestored, and pleasing. Internally with slight variable browning and a few spots as expected, but extremely clean and fresh. This is a really excellent contemporary copy of an important narrative of the French and Indian War that comes from one of the most important Americana collections of the last century. Robert Rogers (1731-95) was an American-born British soldier who found success during King George’s War, the third of the French and Indian Wars. He began as a scout in the 1755 mission to capture Fort St. Frédéric at Crown Point, New York, and by the following year commanded a corps of 600 rangers known as "Rogers' Rangers," famous for their daring exploits. This, Rogers' own account of his wartime experiences, spans the period from September 1755 to February of 1761, when the French surrendered to Rogers at Detroit. It includes detailed firsthand observations of the war that have long made the present account an important historical source. Rogers had a knack for being in the right place at the right time: he participated in General Abercrombie's 1758 attack on Fort Ticonderoga, and was part of Amherst's 1760 attack on Montreal. The journal is also valuable for its early accounts of visits to the Great Lakes (Eerie and Huron) as well as Rogers' descriptions of Delaware villages and Pittsburgh. It was published in England in 1765, and saw much success; King George III read it and was impressed enough to appoint Rogers commander of Fort Michilimackinac in what is now Michigan. Our copy, in its unsophisticated period binding, comes with notable provenance. Everett D. Graff (1885-1964), who served as president of the Newberry Library and the Art Institute of Chicago, was a major collector of Western Americana. Over 100,000 pieces of his collection now reside at the Newberry Library..

Description
Paris: Gruel et Engelmann, 1889. 165 x 83 mm. (6 1/2 x 3 1/4"). 2 p.l., 649 pp., [1] (colophon) leaf. STRIKING CONTEMPORARY BURGUNDY MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY GRUEL (stamp-signed at tail of spine), UPPER COVER WITH A LARGE AND RICHLY DETAILED OVAL BAS-RELIEF PLAQUETTE OF THE LAST SUPPER framed above and below by a large panel of interlacing open strapwork comprised of abstracted gilt floral and foliate curls and other decorative elements, lower cover similarly decorated, with its central medallion containing a gilt cipher in intertwined majuscules, raised bands, spine gilt in double-ruled compartments with central arabesque, gilt filigree turn-ins, claret moiré silk endleaves, all edges gilt, original brass clasps with strapwork decoration. With 26 illustrations, comprised of 22 large black and white woodcut headpieces, and four chromolithographed plates with gold highlights, along with numerous uncolored woodcut initials. Front free endleaf gilt-stamp "24 Mai 1891"; first Communion card of Andre Gallien, dated 9 May 1895, laid in. A VERY FINE COPY, the morocco lustrous and the leaves entirely crisp and clean. Gruel and Engelmann published and bound numerous works of devotion, like the present impressively adorned "Paroissien," a service book that includes the texts and prayers (in Latin and French) used to celebrate Mass throughout the year. The very pleasing plaquette on the front cover showing the Last Supper is reminiscent of the celebrated Apollo and Pegasus bindings done for collector Giovanni Battista Grimaldi (ca. 1524-ca. 1612). In her "Bookbinders and their Craft," Sarah Prideaux says that the Gruel firm, founded in 1811, "always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative in artistic matters, as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements." Paul Gruel (1864-1954) took over the firm after the death of his father, the great Léon Gruel, in 1923 and ably directed the operation until his own death, maintaining the atelier's reputation for excellence. Over the years, the firm employed some of the most skillful artisans in the trade, including Prideaux herself..

1930. SHIMOMURA, Shotaro. Chudo-Ken. Views Within and Outside. Chewdoh-Ken (Tudor House). One leaf of text and 31 mounted gelatin silver prints, each with printed tissue guard. Oblong 4to, 218 x 278 mm., bound in contemporary decorative morocco by Matsuzaki & Co, preserved in a new tan half leather folding box. Kyoto: [ca. 1930]. Only edition of this eccentric Japanese book, published to showcase a Tudor-style mansion designed by William Merrell Vories for Shotaru Shimomura, the chairman of the Japanese department store chain Daimaru. The book is comprised of black and white tipped-in photographs of interior rooms, furniture, decorative elements, and exterior shots of this Western Tudor house built in Japan before the Second World War. Shimomura was also a keen photographer, and exhibited in the Ashiya photographic Salons of 1935, 1936, and 1937. Vories had gone to Japan as a missionary and started an architectural practice to help fund his missionary work. A precious, if somewhat exotic, object.

Description
New York & London: Macmillan & Co, 1894. SECOND EDITION. Text illustrations. Original publisher’s cloth, an exceptionally good copy. Ownership signature of the writer and electrical engineer F[ranz] J[osphe] Dommerque. Scarce second edition of Heaviside’s collected works in all aspects of electricity, practical and theoretical. First printed two years earlier, many of the papers had originally appeared in the Philosophical Magazine and The Electrician. He deals with “theoretical aspects of problems in telegraphy and electrical transmission, making use of an unusual calculatory method called operational calculus, now better known as the method of Laplace transforms, to study transient currents in networks. His work on the theory of the telephone made long-distance service practical” (Encyclopedia Britannica). Heaviside (1850-1925) was a self-taught electrical engineer, physicist and mathematician. He became “an expert in mathematical physics and played an important role in the development of the electro-magnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell and in its practical applications” (DSB). He anticipated employment of Laplace and Fourier transforms in electrical engineering, and was the first to formulate the mathematical equations for use in telegraphy. He was elected an honorary member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, from whom he was awarded the first Faraday Medal, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Description
London: Cadell and Davies, 1813. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary paste-boards, spine repaired. Small book label on paste-down, signature of Wm. Macmath dated 23rd October 1905 on verso of first blank. Overall a fine copy. First edition. Ferriar “combined literary pursuits with an interest in psychological phenomena in An essay towards the theory of apparitions, 1813 in which he showed from historical examples and his own clinical experience ‘that morbid disposition of the brain is capable of producing spectral impressions, without any external prototypes.’ These could occur in the absence of generalized delirium and ‘exclusive of actual insanity . . . even while he [the patient] is convinced of their fallacy” (Hunter). Ferriar, who also did pioneer work in the field of epidemiology, makes frequent references to John Beaumont, who wrote on ghosts and spirits. Ferriar (1760-1815), who studied medicine at Edinburgh University, was a famous physician in Manchester as well as a literary critic. He was the first to suggest that digitalis was beneficial in dropsy, as well as one of the first physicians to recognize an association between acute rheumatism and heart disease. He was appointed physician at Manchester Infirmary where he introduced numerous reforms which aided in the recovery of patients. He also wrote four volumes of medical histories, as well as literary essays, poetry and plays.

N.p.: Mimeograph typescript, 1934. 27 cm; [2], 169, [1], pages, dedication leaf, and original pencil and chalk title leaf with portrait of a grinning Mephistopheles, by Michel Fingesten (Michl Finkelstein), signed in pencil, protected by glassine leaf. Dedication "für HANS ARNOLD geschreiben, Weihnachten 1934," signed in ink by Grete Scholz. Text mimeographed typescript on Crown Van Gelder. Bound in half vellum over buckram cloth-covered boards, with buckram endleaves. Title stamped in gilt letters on vellum panel of top board. Upper board somewhat bowed, but book is effectively pristine. The successful German-Jewish banker Hans Arnold made his home in Berlin a salon for artists, musicians, and intellectuals (the structure now houses the American Academy in Berlin). As a patron of the arts, Arnhold merited this hand-made gift, dedicated for Christmas 1934, of a Goethe's Faust, one of an unspecified (but certainly tiny) number of mimeographed copies printed on Crown Van Gelder watermarked paper and accompanied by an original drawing by the notable illustrator Michel Fingesten. The gift dedication is signed by Grete Scholz (d. 1937), wife of the painter Fritz-Karl Scholz-Wetterhof (d. 1945?). (Fingesten's ex-libris for Grete Scholz is extant.) Michel Fingesten (1884-1943), was a peripatetic artist known primarily for illustrated bookplates, who produced a rich body of work in the course of his agitated life. An Italian Jew, he was held in the concentration camp at Ferramonti for three years until its liberation in 1943. He died soon after a result of wounds sustained in a car accident. This volume is an artifact of the vibrant artistic and intellectual life that flourished in Germany and Mitteleurop at the cusp of Fascist domination in the 1930s.
