Description
Lisboa (Lisbon): Typ de Borges, 1850. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Seven volumes in four. 8vo. xxiv,183;224;215;208;213,(3);220;279,(1)pp. Errata page for Vol. 5 after p. 213; publisher's announcement of the Diccionario after p. 279 of vol. 7. Frontispiece portraits of the author in Vol., 1, of O Immortal Infante D. Henrique in Vol. 2; and portrait plates of D. Vasco da Gama and Antonio da Silveira in Vol. 5, and D. Alvaro de Castro and D. Joao de Castro in Vol. 6. Volume I begins with a comprehensive chronology of Portuguese exploration in Africa, Asia, America and Oceania, commencing in 1412, followed by descriptions of the voyages and discoveries. Contemporary marbled sheep, spines gilt with brown lettering labels. Marbled paper endpapers. Volume I with the bookseller label of Livraria de Joao Pereira da Silva, Lisboa; and also a label from Francis Edwards of London: "This Book was purchased in 1941 from London whilst the great battle for civilization was in progress." Rare. OCLC lists scant copies in any early edition. This edition not seen at auction since 1939. Not found in Hill or Cox. A Diccionario Geographico was subsequently issued, usually designated as Volume 8; this set contains the announcement for the dictionary on the leaf following Vol. 7, p. 279 as not yet ready. Where seen, the dictionary is usually with the second edition and bears an imprint different from that of Borges. A couple of the plates have light foxing; 1891 (?) ownership signature across the title of each volume, and with the title of Volume 1 with a light offset presumably from a clipping laid in. But essentially a near fine set with only traces of wear and rubbing. Text in Portuguese.

Description
[np Albany?, 1820. 16pp, caption title [as issued]. Disbound, with small stitching holes in blank inner margin. Light wear and fox. Good+. A bitter attack on New York's newly enacted Sunday closing law, arguing that the legislature does not possess "one particle of authority to enact any law which might, directly or indirectly, give a preference to the religious creed of any sect, to the disparagement of any other, or in any manner to infringe the right of any individual to the unrestrained and peaceable enjoyment of his opinions on the subject of religion..." The unidentified Memorialists also object to exemption of church property from taxation, and disqualification of witnesses who do not profess a religious creed. The argument, based on law and First Principles of government, is made with enthusiasm. Not in Sabin, AI, Eberstadt, Decker, Marvin, Marke, Harv. Law Cat., BEAL, NUC.

Description
Norwalk, Ohio: S. & C.A. Preston, Printers, 1842. 29, [3 blanks] pp. Stitched. Lightly foxed, lightly worn, final blank has a hole in it. Good+. Allegations of mismanagement resulted in judicial oversight of this Company beginning in 1836. Worcester was appointed Special Master Commissioner with broad powers to investigate "the affairs of said Company," especially its banking practices, to determine "whether its management is safe, and whether the standing rules relating to it have been observed faithfully." Worcester was also charged with examining the Company's investment practices and financial decisions, and determining whether the Company or any of its officers engaged in chicanery. Worcester's Report is a detailed rendering, complete with Tables, of his findings. This is one of Norwalk's earliest imprints. According to Morgan and OCLC it is located only at the Cincinnati Historical Society and the Ohio Historical Society. Morgan 6717 [2]. OCLC 38187007 [2] [as of September 2012].
