Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1941. Some scuffing to black cloth boards, with minor blemish at joint; close to near fine. In an unclipped copy of the illustrated jacket, with typical fading to spine, minor edge-wear, and slight creasing to crown; also close to near fine.. First Edition. Thick octavo. It's a testament to Evans' vision that thirty-one of his photographs—bound in the front of a book published with little fanfare, and set against the backdrop of over 450 pages of verbose text—could have had such an influence on the history of documentary photograph. Description
1835. First Edition. (THOMAS, William) Defensor. The Enemies of the Constitution Discovered, or, An Inquiry into the Origin and Tendency of Popular Violence. Containing a Complete and Circumstantial Account of the Unlawful Proceedings at the City of Utica, October 21st 1835; The Dispersion of the State Anti-Slavery Convention By the Agitators, The Destruction of a Democratic Press… with a Concise Treatise on the Practice of the Court of His Honor Judge Lynch… Accompanied with Numerous Highly Interesting and Important Documents. New-York: Leavitt, Lord, 1835. Small octavo (4-3/4 by 7-1/2 inches), original blind-stamped brown cloth; pp. (i-iii), iv-viii, (ix), x-xii, (9), 10-183 (1). $1800.First edition of a momentous record of the 1835 Utica Riot in which a mob attacked delegates of the American Anti-Slavery Society, forcing them to flee and reconvene at the estate of Gerrit Smith, triggering his rage at anti-abolitionists' attempts to deny free speech, with Smith's fiery speech together in book form for the first time with abolitionist Alvan Stewart's bold Utica speech proclaiming: ""the tyrant is at your doors, liberty is bleeding, liberty is dying… when you are speechless, liberty is dead,"" an exceptional copy in original cloth.News of Denmark Vesey and the subsequent 1831 Nat Turner Insurrection sparked the ""debut of American antislavery constitutionalism"" and the first meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS), which galvanized the the rise of a dedicated movement in Utica, New York (Wiecek, Sources of Antislavery Constitutionalism, 171). While the state abolished slavery by 1827, fugitives from slavery could still be arrested and returned to owners from other states. At rumors of that planned Utica meeting, the town's merchants rose in opposition, arguing it would damage the city's commercial progress and a potential role in the presidential campaign of New York's Martin Van Buren, who later declared the 1857 Dred Scott decision affirmed his belief that the word ""citizen"" in the Constitution ""was not intended to embrace the African race."" In Utica, a year after abolitionist lawyer Alvan Stewart was burned in effigy, the town's anti-abolitionists united against the AASS convention. As documented in this first edition of Enemies of Constitution, published the same year, merchants raged against what they called intent to promote ""insurrection among the slaves… and dissolve the union."" That opposition exploded in what is known as the Utica Riot, in which the anti-abolitionists declared ""the whole south is waiting with trembling anxiety to know how we bear ourselves… we call upon the citizens of New York to arrest these madmen."" Minutes after AASS delegates began their meeting in a Utica church, a mob of hundreds attacked, crying ""break down the doors! Damn the fanatics."" The mob ""stamped and yelled like savages and madmen,"" tore up AASS documents and forced the delegates out of town.Despite the mob violence, delegates quickly reconvened in Peterboro at the estate of Gerrit Smith, making Utica and Oneida County ""an important center of the Abolitionist Movement… The rioters' challenge to freedom of speech prompted Smith, one of America's wealthiest men, to lend financial and political support to the movement"" (Oneida Freedom Trail). Notably included herein are documents by mob leaders, along with a lengthy letter from the Postmaster General on free speech in the mail, saying: ""abolitionists may have a legal right to its use for distributing their papers in New-York… but it does not follow that they have a legal right to that privilege in for such a purpose in Louisiana or Georgia."" Also featured is an early printing of Alvan Stewart's October 21 Utica speech, declaring: ""THE TYRANT IS AT YOUR DOORS, LIBERTY IS BLEEDING, LIBERTY IS DYING… when you are speechless, LIBERTY IS DEAD"" (emphasis in original). This is joined by Gerrit Smith's October 22 Peterboro speech, where Smith, like Stewart, invokes: ""the right of free discussion… purchased by the blood and toil of our fathers… [and] the demand which slave-holders now make on us to surrender the right."" By rejecting the right of free speech, he proclaims that slaveholders have, in effect, conceded ""slavery cannot live, unless the north be tongue-tied."" First edition, first printing: copies found in original brown (this copy) and blue-green cloth, no priority determined. Mispagination as issued without loss of text. Sabin 19264. Bookplate of the prestigious Library Company of Philadelphia with deaccession inkstamp. Separate partially obscured bookplate.Text fine, inner paper hinges expertly reinforced, expert restoration to spine ends of original cloth.

(Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 242) 1st edition.Tassilo, Baron von Heydebrand und der Lasa (known in English as "Baron von der Lasa" was an important German chessmaster, chess historian and theoretician of the nineteenth century, a member of the Berlin Chess Club and a founder of the Berlin Chess School (the Berlin Pleiades). His name is usually abbreviated as "von der Lasa", as this is how he signed his letters. However both contemporary and more recent writers have used other abbreviations, such as "von Heydebrandt" (which is a mis-spelling) and "Der Lasa". The Prussian King (later Emperor) William I made a joke out of the confusion by saying, "Good morning, dear Heydebrand. How is von der Lasa doing?" Von der Lasa was born 17 October 1818 in Berlin. He studied law in Bonn and Berlin. From 1845 he was a diplomat in the service of Prussia. His career took him to Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Rio de Janeiro, among other places. He retired from the diplomatic service in 1864, and thereafter devoted himself to the world of chess. He played several matches and defeated the strongest masters in the period 1843-1853. He won against Henry Thomas Buckle 2-1 (1843), Adolf Anderssen 4-2 (1845), Johann Löwenthal 6-1 (1846), John Schulten 4-1 (1850), Anderssen 10-5 (1851), and Howard Staunton 7-6 (1853). To the modern chess world he is known above all as the main author of the Handbuch des Schachspiels (first published in 1843). His friend Paul Rudolf von Bilguer, responsible for the original plan, had died in 1840, with the work still in the early stages. Von der Lasa took over, and, in a noble gesture of friendship, put his friend's name as author. In later editions of the Handbuch, in German commonly called der Bilguer, von der Lasa was named as co-author. In 1850 von der Lasa published in the Deutsche Schachzeitung (German Chess Magazine) a call for an international chess tournament, the first ever, to be held in Trier. Instead the first such tournament was held in 1851 in London. Von der Lasa did not play in tournaments, being usually busy as an organizer, but played well in off-hand games against such leading masters as Howard Staunton and Adolf Anderssen. He was also a renowned chess investigator and theoretician, publishing numerous articles in the German Chess Magazine and, in 1897, his great work Zur Geschichte und Literatur des Schachspiels, Forschungen (Researches in the History and Literature of Chess). In the course of his researches he traveled extensively (including a trip around the world in 1887–88) and accumulated a comprehensive chess library, to which he published a catalog in 1896. In 1898 the German Chess Federation saluted his tireless efforts and accomplishments by conferring on him its first honorary membership. One of von der Lasa's last services was to encourage HJR Murray to pursue further researches into the early history of chess. Von der Lasa died on 27 July 1899 in Storchnest bei Lissa, now in western Poland. His library is still intact at Kórnik Castle near Poznañ.Condition:Spine ends scuffed, corners bumped and rubbed, soiled, extremities rubbed, label on front cover else a good to very good copy.

Description
New York: Gagosian Gallery, 2021. First edition. A clean copy. 7 x 10.5 inches. 62 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original pictorial boards. "This catalogue was published on the occasion of Ed Ruscha: Paintings at Gagosian, 541 West 24th Street, New York, an exhibition of new paintings by the artist. In these works, rendered with great delicacy and detail in idiosyncratic formats, Ruscha revisits the leitmotifs of the flag, the tire, and the mountain. The flag becomes newly distorted in RIPPLING FLAG (2020), this time abnormally widened to extend past the frame, its flowing surface creating twisted shapes and shadows over the red and white stripes. A shredded tire tread, or “gator,” hovers over a barren, red-skied landscape in Hardscrabble (2020). And in new mountain paintings, Ruscha presents one of his archetypal snowy ranges, but inverts one of the peaks so that it appears to descend from the sky" (the publisher).
