Description
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926. 1st Edition. original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the famous "three-man paper," the first, complete, self-consistent description of quantum mechanics. "In 1925, after an extended visit to Bohr's Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Copenhagen, Heisenberg tackled the problem of spectrum intensities of the electron taken as an anharmonic oscillator (a one-dimensional vibrating system). His position that the theory should be based only on observable quantities was central to his paper of July 1925, "Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen" ("Quantum-Theoretical Reinterpretation of Kinematic and Mechanical Relations"). Heisenberg's formalism rested upon noncommutative multiplication; Born, together with his new assistant Pascual Jordan, realized that this could be expressed using matrix algebra, which they used in a paper submitted for publication in September as "Zur Quantenmechanik" ("On Quantum Mechanics"). By November, Born, Heisenberg, and Jordan had completed "Zur Quantenmechanik II" ("On Quantum Mechanics II"), colloquially known as the "three-man paper," which is regarded as the foundational document of a new quantum mechanics" (Britannica's Guide to the Nobel Prizes). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Development of matrix formalism for the Heisenberg quantum mechanics. Systems with arbitrary many degrees of freedom." IN: Zeitschrift für Physik, Band 35, February 1926, pp. 557-615. Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926. Octavo, original wrappers. Small chip at base of spine. "Born, Heisenberg 35" in pencil on spine. Volume/issue number written in ink at top of front wrapper. One of the foundational papers in quantum mechanics, rare in original wrappers.

Description
Hamburg: Hirundo Press, 2000. First and Limited Edition. Original wraps. Fine. Saltzwedel, Caroline. Deluxe version of only 20 copies, this no. 8, folio size, text volume 14 pp., signed by both Kevin Perryman and Caroline Saltzwedel, text in German, etchings unbound, each signed and numbered by Caroline Saltzwedel. Caroline Saltzwedel, born in England, has lived in Hamburg since 1995 as a graphic artist and painter. She studied German at the Universities of Durham, Oxford and Bonn, and printed graphics at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford. In 1998 she founded the Hirundo Press for artists' books in small editions; her works are in numerous public and private collections including the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the British Library, the Bodleian Library, Stanford University, and the Widener Library (Harvard) among many others. Saltzwedel's works are often paired with original, new works of poetry or are based on mythological figures - this work, "Daidalos", allows the viewer to trace the path of Daedalus and Icarus on their legendary flight from Crete to Sicily. The etchings for this edition convey a ethereal sense of travel and distance, archaic movements created by the bite of acid on the metal plate, beautifully in tune to the poetry of Kevin Perryman; in this third artist's book by the Hirundo Press, Perryman creates a series of poems that document a passage of time as well as distance, a journey that the viewer undertakes alongside this Greek myth. The prior owner obtained this copy directly from Caroline Saltzwedel during Codex, a book arts fair held in Richmond, California. ___DESCRIPTION: This work is comprised of, first, the poems by Kevin Perryman, in German, softbound and hand-sewn, with an original woodcut on the wrapper; loosely laid in at the front is the small (image approximately 4" by 6" on paper approximately 8" by 11.5") etching guarded by tissue; Van Dijck Antiqua type, folio size (12.5" by 8.25"), unpaginated with eight leaves, numbered VIII of XX copies (a total of 160 copies were produced), signed by Kevin Perryman and Caroline Saltzwedel on the colophon; the book fits into a pocket mounted onto the left-hand side of the box. The second component of this work is seven full-page three-colour etchings by Saltzwedel, introduced by a single leaf, folded once, which serves as title and colophon pages to the etchings; the colophon page and each of the seven etchings are numbered "VIII/XX" and signed by Saltzwedel, each etching is also titled by her, all in pencil, each with a tissue guard. The images are approximately 7 1/2" by 9 3/4" on Moulin de Gue paper that is approximately 11 1/4" by 15", and are loosely laid into the right-hand side of the box; of this deluxe version, only 20 copies were produced (there were also 160 copies of the softbound book of poems). All housed in a clamshell box covered in dark-blue cloth, with a two-colour woodcut inset and title blind-embossed on the front board, title in blind on the spine. ___CONDITION: The softbound volume and etchings are fine, the softcover volume with strong hinges and no edge wear, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the etchings are clean with bright colours, without edge wear. The clamshell box is fine, strong and sturdy, clean but for a very few stray marks, without wear. ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1929. First American edition. Deluxe issue, limited to 775 copies (575 for England and 200 for the United States) signed by Arthur Rackham, this being copy no. 94 of the American issue. Publisher's white vellum, front cover ruled and lettered in gilt, spine decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A few text leaves poorly opened, some scattered foxing, bookplate on front paste-down. Quarto (10 5/16 x 7 3/4 in; 263 x 197 mm). 231, [1] pp. Twelve full page color plates, twenty-two black and white line drawings. A very good copy, housed in a green cloth slipcase. Reportedly published as a means for thwarting debt, The Vicar of Wakefield became one of the most popular novels of the late 18th century. Mixing irony with sentimentalism, it paints a portrait of village life "narrated by Dr. Primrose, the title character, whose family endured multiple trials -- including the loss of their fortune, the seduction of a daughter, the destruction of their home by fire, and the vicar's incarceration -- before all is put right at the end" (Britannica). Goldsmith was a noted Irish wit and a member of Samuel Johnson's famed literary club, who Johnson praised as: "In genius, vivid, versatile, sublime. In style, clear, elevated, elegant." The legend of the book's publication is that Goldsmith was about to be arrested by his landlady for debt, when Johnson was able to sell the manuscript of the novel to a publisher for sixty pounds, saving his friend in the nick of time. For this illustrated edition, Rackham embraced historical costume and his traditional whimsy, despite the more fashionable Jazz-Age and Art Deco style predominant at the time (Husdon). Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Latimore and Haskell 65. Riall 170.

Description
[British Columbia, Canada, 1942. Good.. [1]p. Horizontal fold, chips at two corners, a few tiny closed edge tears, light toning. Rare form intended to be filled out by families of Japanese ancestry living on the west coast of Canada as the United States' entry into the Second World War brought perceived danger of invasion or sabotage to North America. The Canadian model seems to have been kinder and gentler than the American approach, seen through the main purpose of the form, as stated here: "The purpose of this Questionaire is to assist us in relocation of families in Eastern Canada. As many families will be moving East this summer, efforts will be made to have various members of a family in the same neighbourhood where possible." The form asks for the names of the father and mother of a household, with address and occupation, as also for brothers and sisters over 17, and children under 17, and further questions about the occupations of the parents. "The British Columbia Security Commission was created by the Canadian Federal Government...to organise and supervise the uprooting and relocation of approximately 23,000 Japanese Nationals and Japanese Canadians.  In addition, it was to set up housing and welfare programmes including employment, education for children, and medical services for the sick" - Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.

1980. [Crossdressing] [LGBTQ] Gosselin, Chris and Wilson, Glen. Sexual Variations: Fetishism, Sadomasochism, Transvestism. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1980. First American edition. 191 pages. Original tan boards with red clothbound spine, authors, title, and publisher stamped on spine in silver. Original dustjacket with black and pink text on a tan background with silver borders. This 1980 book presents findings on human sexuality from studies by psychologists Chris Gosselin, PhD and Glen Wilson, PhD. Gosselin and Wilson draw from interviews, case studies, and questionnaires to present a nuanced view of human sexuality and challenge common perceptions about what is or is not "normal" when it comes to sex. The book touches on sexually taboo subjects from homosexuality to BDSM to transvestism. In the first chapter, titled "Who, and What, is Normal?", the authors outline the difficulties in classifying a topic as intimate and fluid as sexual preference as simply "normal" or "abnormal". Referring to a study conducted by the psychologists, the book states that 37% of men have homosexual experiences after puberty and an additional 13% have homosexual thoughts on which they never act - by these statistics homosexuality is as "normal" as heterosexuality among men. Gosselin and Wilson propose this simple and nonjudgmental definition of normality; "That which promotes love, caring, and affection between people is normal; that which divides them is abnormal", a strikingly progressive idea within the deeply homophobic culture of the 70s and 80s. Small rip to front of dustjacket at top. Overall very good condition. A 1980 psychological study of human sexuality which attempts to normalize homosexuality and other sexual preferences seen as taboo in mainstream culture.
