Description
Summary: London: Richard Jugge, 1574. Folio (13 x 9 in). The third folio edition of the Bishops' Bible, with a fold-out map. Text in attractive black letter and a good number of woodcuts and four titles. Description: 26 out of 28 preliminary leaves present, with Calendar printed in red and black. Lacks general title but all four other title pages are present. Printed in smaller type than the 1572 folio, but still contains woodcuts as chapter summaries (Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, etc.) and an additional full-page composite cut before Revelation, and a few maps. First chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout. Collation: A-M^8, N^6 (Gen-Deut); Aa-Ss^8, Tt^6 (Joshua-Job); Aaa-Sss^8, T^6, V^6 (Psalms-Mal); Aaaa-Mmmm^8, Nnnn^6 (Apocrypha); A-Q^8, R^6 (New Testament). Lacks general title and R4-R6 (last three leaves). With two page fold-out map of New Map of Places Mentioned in the New Testament bound at front, but lacks the two page fold-out maps in Exodus and Joshua. Binding: Rebacked in marbled calf with old marbled sheep covers laid on. Front cover with some surface loss. Spine with four raised bands and a red gilt-lined label with the words "Bishop's Bible." Plain endpapers. Condition: Generally a very good copy with marginal notes occasionally shaved; Occasional staining to the top and bottom margins (e.g. D3-D6, K6-K8); some browning; Aii (Matt 1) piece torn from inner column with loss of a few verses; B4 closed tear to outer edge just touching the text and through several notes; C1 long closed tear through most of the inner portion of the leaf without loss; G7 closed tear to bottom of inner column through 18 lines; M7 closed tear with loss to the first several lines of text to both columns; ex-library bookplate of Zion Research Library on front pastedown. Note: The third folio edition of the Bishops' Bible. Printed in smaller type with 63 lines to the column. After the first folio, which contains over 120 woodcuts, the number of woodcuts in the Bishops' Bible gradually decreases. The third folio still contains a good number of cuts, and the fold-out map at the beginning of this copy is quite nice. References: Herbert 137; STC 2109; ESTC S107032; Luborsky & Ingram 2109.

Description
Glasgow: Charles Frank Limited, 1973. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. First Edition. 60 pp., 11-3/4 by 8 1/4 inches. Comb bound with original Special Exhibition Tools of Science brochure bound in. A well read copy, with mild denting, creasing and other signs of wear. Wraps. While not as well illustrated as we might want (common for books of this time) there are 808 instruments listed. It is worth owning to learn the scope of this portion of Franks collection and what was possible in the years Frank was collecting. "At the turn of the century, in Glasgow's history Saltmarket, Arthur Frank's father, Charles, opened a small corner ship where he designed, repaired, and sold photographic apparatus and scientific instruments. Over the years, there accumulated in the cellar under the shop a miscellany of old telescopes and microscopes and other instruments in varying degrees of disrepair. When Arthur Frank returned from service in the Army in 1945, he was faced with the mammoth task of sorting through the accumulation of the years. His first impulse was to throw out what appeared to be a lot of rubbish. Perhaps it was sentiment - he, himself, doesn't quite know - but he decided there and then that the old, broken instruments could be the start of a collection. From then on he used both his spare time and spare money to build up a collection of instruments that he hoped would, one day, be of historical importance. At that time few people paid any attention to old instruments, and articles which today might be worth hundres of pounds could be bought for a song. Since Arthur Frank trained as an optician and optical instrument maker, it was not surprising that his inclination lay towards optical instruments. The collection covers a wide range of instruments, but is strongest in microscopes and telescopes'; the section on nineteenth century microscopes is ranked among the world's best. Another secition of which he is justly proud is the Scottish Collection" [see Brass and Glass, another book on just this subject]" From the Introduction.
