Description
Venice Girolamo Albrizzi, 1696. 8vo., full crushed brown 19th century morocco with plain sides. Spine with five raised bands and gilt titling. Albrizzi, the publisher, has used a number of the wood blocks from the Giolito editions of Ovid's Le Trasformationi [1553 and afterwards]. In the present edition, there are a total of 73 images measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, almost all of which, according to Ruth Mortimer, "...were designed for this [1553] edition." The history of the blocks is complicated, but according to Mortimer, "Henkel notes recurrence of the Giolito blocks as late as 1688." With the exception of Fables 1, 2, 3, 4, 16, 33 and 39 (which are offered in combination with other Fables), each of the 73 other Fables is printed in italic type one to a page, beneath one of the woodcuts. Below that, under the heading, ALLEGORIA, is a paragraph printed in roman type. The layout and (of course) the illustrations, in fact the very "feel" of the book, is entirely appropriate for the middle of the 15th century. It is altogether anachronistic. Girolamo Albrizzi, the publisher, is responsible for a number of important books, including: L'Originie del Danubo [1685]; Vincenzo Coronelli's Atlante veneto [1695], and Alessandro Locatelli's Racconto historico della Veneta guerra in Levante [1691]. A most CURIOUS AND HIGHLY APPEALING edition of Ovid. For a complete discussion of the blocks and of Harvard's fine Ovid holdings, see: Mortimer/Italian 342. Description
N.p.: N.p., 1995. Archive of six hand-drawn storyboards from the 1995 film, executed in manuscript ink and watercolor paint by visual effects artist Peter Kuran. Additionally included are seven black-and-white photographs of Nixon used for illustration reference. Kuran worked as a visual effects artist and supervisor for a number of films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, most notably including "RoboCop" (1987), "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), "Starship Troopers" (1997), and "Men in Black" (1997). The second of director Oliver Stone's trilogy of films about US presidents, a semi-biographical film chronicling Nixon's impeachment, with flashbacks to his life before the presidency. Stone received some criticism for depicting Nixon (in typical dramatic flair) as an alcoholic and a fallen hero, though the film was well-received. Nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Actor. Housed in a black three ring binder. Materials varying sizes. Some light creasing to the edges, else Near Fine.

Description
Erasmus (Desiderius, of Rotterdam): L'Eloge de la Folie (In Praise of Folly) … traduit par Mr. Gueudeville. Amsterdam: Francois L'Honore, 1731. Engraved frontispiece (partially wrinkled and detached), also portrait with Erasmus, Sir Thomas More, and Hans Holbein, six folding plates and 75 text engravings. These are the same copperplates as used in the first "counterfeit" edition of 1713/1714. Tall 12mo, [xxiv] 234 pp. + [xvii] index; vintage mottled calf, gilt-titled label on spine. In 1509 Erasmus composed his famous essay as a satirical attack on superstitions and other unconventional traditions in European society. Since its inception it has been considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance and helped develop early stages of the Protestant Reformation. Erasmus uses satire to examine doctrine and corruption within the Catholic Church, even though he was devoted deeply to Catholicism. He concludes with statements supporting Christian Protestantism and frequently references Greek mythological creatures and figures. Early printing of this popular translation from Latin into French.

Description
Boston: Joshua Cushing, 1808. Very good. 12mo. 196 pp. Contemporary American tree-calf, smooth spine with gilt horizontal fillets, red lettering piece ("Grove"), two original binder's blanks at front and back, sprinkled edges (text FOXED as is true with all copies, for which see images; short marginal tear on pp. 5/6; lower fore-corner of upper cover scuffed and bumped, headcap chipped). Overall an attractive copy with an intriguing provenance. AN UNUSUALLY STERN EARLY AMERICAN BOOKPLATE: "JOSHUA GREEN'S PROPERTY ☛ RETURN THIS WITH CARE." This individual may be Joshua Green (1764-1847), a graduate of Harvard and noted intellect, who became a judge and served in the State Legislature, residing in Wendell, Mass. We have seen one other example of this bookplate, not in situ (as here) but extracted from a binding, at Mass. Historical Society. There may also be one at NLM (HMD Collection WZ 260 P867 1790) which as of this writing remains unconfirmed.

Description
New York: Collins, Perkins, and Co., 1806. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary calf, rubbed; a very nice copy. First edition of the first American publication on preventative medicine. In general, Ricketson emphasizes several methods for preserving health, reflecting a holistic view integrating physical, mental, and social aspects for overall well-being. He advocates for a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and recommends avoiding processed foods and excessive sugar. He further encourages regular exercise as a key component of maintaining health, including walking, swimming, or any form of movement that promotes cardiovascular health. Sections on the environment, clothing, passions of the mind, retentions and excretions are also included. Of particular interest is Ricketson’s take on mental well-being, recognizing practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and stress management techniques. Like any good doctor, he suggests regular health check-ups, promotes vaccinations, and advises the use of herbal remedies and natural supplements, though he advises consulting healthcare professionals before starting any new regimen. An appendix includes more specific observations on bathing, cleanliness, ventilation and medical electricity. All of this sounds exactly like what your doctor would advise. But this books was published in 1806. Not much has changed in the last 220 years. Ricketson (1768–1839), a Quaker physician, studied medicine under Benjamin Anthony and practiced in Dutchess County, New York, where he served as the president of the county’s medical society in 1823-1824. He knew (and was possibly friends with) Thomas Jefferson, to whom he sent a copy of this book on August 6, 1809. American Imprints 11289; Atwater 2978.

Very good in archival mylar sleeve. ABERCROMBIE ANSTRUTHER LAWSON (1870 - 1927) was a botanist, foundation professor of botany at the University of Sydney. After a year at the University of Toronto, Lawson claimed to have studied medicine and botany at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1895-96. Lawson graduated at the University of California, Berkeley (Bachelor of Science, 1897; Master of Science, 1898). After a year as assistant in botany Lawson spent 1901 at the University of Chicago with Professors John Merle Coulter and Charles Joseph Chamberlain in the new Hull laboratories and was awarded a Ph.D. (1901). Lawson returned to California and spent five years teaching at Stanford University under Professor D. H. Campbell. Lawson was appointed lecturer in botany at the University of Glasgow in 1907. Lawson produced "Memoirs on Synapsis, Nuclear Osmosis and Chromosome Reduction", which appeared in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1911-12. In 1913 Lawson became foundation professor of botany at the University of Sydney. Lawson was well versed in and strongly committed to the theory of Evolution. Insisting on adequate laboratory facilities, he rejected attempts to locate the department in the arts building and soon occupied a large part of the Macleay Museum. About 1925 Lawson formally introduced the study of ecology into the teaching program. His main research interest was in the origin and evolution of gymnosperms. Lawson was a fellow of the Linnean societies of London and New South Wales, and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. PROVENANCE: MARSHALL AVERY HOWE (1867-1936) graduated from the University of Vermont in 1890. On leaving college, Howe taught for a year in the Brattleboro High School but left in the summer of 1891 to become an Instructor in Cryptogamic Botany at the University of California at Berkeley. At the end of the 1895-96 college year, Howe resigned to accept a fellowship at Columbia University where he studied Hepaticae with Lucien Underwood. He received his Ph.D from Columbia in 1898 and from 1898 to 1901 was Curator of the University Herbarium. During this time, the plans for the creation of the New York Botanical Garden were materializing and the Columbia University Herbarium was deposited at the NYBG. In 1901 Howe became a member of the NYBG scientific staff and in 1906 became curator. From 1901 until his death in 1936, Howe was associated with the NYBG being appointed Director in 1935. Member of NAS.

Description
Fairview Park, Ohio: AP Books, Inc., (1979). Quarto, hardcover (slick white photo. illus. boards), 229 pp. Fine. From lower cover: With the publication of Euclid Beach Park is Closed for the Season came an effort to document in detail a part of American history. The amusement park in the United States has been a familiar part of everyone’s childhood since the 1880s and has yet to be given the attention this important social feature demands. Response to the first publication about the Cleveland park went beyond any imagined expectation. The park, the subject, was and is important to thousands of people. The concept of a “Second Look” at Euclid Beach Park was only a natural conclusion for the publisher/authorship to draw. Due to the first book numerous new finds were brought forward and fresh new, illuminating, entertaining and meaningful materials were available for this look at the “Beach.” It is hoped that the advent of an unprecedented two books on one amusement park will only serve to demonstrate the significance of the subject of amusement parks and the unique character of that very special place known as Euclid Beach Park.
