Description
London: Printed for Benjamin Billingsley, at the sign of the Printing Press, in the piazza of the Royal Exchange, over against Popes-Head-Alley, in Cornhill, 1675. Two volumes bound as one; octavo (17 x 12 cm.), [8], 159, 158-246; 136, [16] pages; with errors in pagination as issued. Two engraved, illustrated additional titles. Publisher's advertisement on verso of the terminal leaf. Indexes. Second part has separate title page: New additions to the art of husbandry : comprizing a new way of enriching meadows, destroying of moles, making tulips of any colour : with an approved way for ordering of fish and fish-ponds, and destroying the hern... Third Edition. A scarce work on husbandry, attributed to Joseph Blagrave by Wing. Blagrave was a noted 17th century astrologer and authority on the practice of physic. It was edited by his nephew Obadiah Blagrave (DNB), a London bookseller, who along with Benjamin Billingsley originally published the first part of the work in 1669. The second part, titled New Additions to the Art of Husbandry, appeared the following year. The present second combined edition is entirely reset from the edition of 1670 and includes an additional section in the second part on singing birds not found in any previous edition (pages 51-136). Interestingly, Billingsley's advertisement on the verso of the terminal leaf promotes not just books for sale, but also various salves, lozenges, pills, powders and other remedies. ~ Fussel [The Old English Farming Books (1947)] describes the author as an astrologer, and his work of "derivative character". In turn he quotes Richard Weston who states that Blagrave has "copied verbatim, 181 pages from Fitz-Herbert without making any apology for this freedom; and the remaining chapters are taken, with the same liberty, from Mascall, Blyth, and an Italian author..." [Weston, Tracts on Practical Agriculture (1773)]. The work also includes sections on bees and angling, and eighty-five pages, Some Further Additions Concerning Singing Birds. In marbled paper over half-brown morocco, with all edges marbled, and matching marbled endpapers. Compartmented spine with gilt-tooled in a floral pattern. Some scuffing to boards and wear to edges. Still very good. Ownership inscription of "Littleton Powys June 16, ’75”. Powys (1647?-1732) had only recently embarked on his career in law. He was knighted in 1692, served time on the Court of King's Bench, and was appointed Baron of the Exchequer. The front pastedown bears a later armorial bookplate of Edwin F. Snow. Near fine. [OCLC locates eight copies; British Bee Books 41; Fussel, page 76; Wing (2nd ed.) B3117, 3120; ESTC R004466].

Description
MYRON "GRIM" NATWICK draws Betty Boop kicking up her heels to celebrate a birthday and the end of the year holidays. The sketch catches the readers' eye about midway along the first page left margin of this three page letter. In a large hand, Natwick first sends birthday wishes and continues noting the passage of time as the holiday season begins starting with Thanksgiving. "How fast everything moves at this time of year." He draws an open exclamation mark filled in with yellow water color on the right margin and opposite his drawing. Betty Boop's hair is shaded with the same color. "After Thanksgiving, time moves on 12 cylinders...." He continues with news of mutual friends and signs, "Grim." The drawing measures approximately 3 1/2 inches tall from foot to hand and similarly across from hair to outstretched foot on an 8 1/2 by 11 inch page. Overall fine condition with some show through water color on verso and sunning on lower portion of the first page. The second and third pages must have been laid on top of the first page since those sheets show water color from the cartoon. A charming chatty letter with a sketch of his enduring cartoon character. The letter consists of three pages two separate sheets, dated Dec. 6, 1980. Boop started out as the girl friend dog character to her canine boyfriend Bimbo in cartoon series, "Talkartoons" produced by Max and Dave Fleischer for Paramount. Natwick transformed Betty into a girlish vamp whose figure was modeled after actress Mae West and voice on the singer Helen Kane (who sued Fleischer and lost). Betty Boop was a hugely successful cartoon during its tenure on the screen during the 1930's. She was retired in 1939. A revival of interest took shape in the 1970's and continues. Natwick's drawing of his most famous cartoon reflects the renewed interest. In addition to creating Betty Boop, when Natwick moved to Disney Studios, he became a lead animator on films including, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and worked on Mickey Mouse for the film, "Fantasia,

Description
Washington: Geo. S. Gideon, Printer, 1858. Original printed pink wrappers [some discoloration], stitched. vii, [1 blank], 132pp. A few pages with a bit of inner margin spotting. Very Good. Inscribed above the title, "J.G. Woodbury Per J.D. Bright." The question was whether the State of Indiana had legally returned Senators Bright and Fitch to the Senate. Bright and Fitch were Democrats, elected by Indiana's Democratic Senate; the Republican members of the State Senate failed to participate in the election. The next Legislature, which was predominantly Republican, declared this election illegal, and chose Henry S. Lane and William M. McCarty as Senators. They claimed their seats in Washington. The U.S. Senate rejected their claim on a Party vote, and voted to seat Bright and Fitch. The title page is preceded by a detailed Table of Contents, listing all the opinions, resolutions, testimony, votes, reports, and speeches. Much discussion occurs on the legal authority for the U.S. Senate to judge the qualifications of those who claim to have been duly elected. Bright lived in southern Indiana; he owned a farm and slaves across the river in Kentucky. His interests-- both material and emotional-- were those of a southern plantation owner. During the War, Bright became the only person from a Northern State expelled from the Senate for his Confederate sympathies. Fitch was along for the ride--- he was elected to the U.S. Senate to fill a vacancy in the term beginning March 4, 1855, and served from February 4, 1857, to March 3, 1861. He commanded Union troops during the War. Not in Sabin, Cohen, or Eberstadt. OCLC 24888369 [4].
