Very Good binding
Description
London: Moon, Boys, & Graves, 1832. Full Leather. Very Good binding. From the Preface: “The present collection of Shakspeare’s Plays differs in arrangement from any that has hitherto been published. The Tragedies, Comedies and Historical Plays are divided; and in each division, the consecutive order of the pieces has reference to the country in which the action is laid, or to the epoch at which it is supposed to have taken place”. Certainly a unique approach, coupled with printing of all of the plays as pages octavo in size and arranged consecutively, four on each folio page. Illustrated with 100 engraved plates, including two engraved portraits of Shakespeare. The Moon, Boys & Graves concern obtained the plates from the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery and the dramatic images are “depicted from the powerful pencils of Reynolds, Opie, Northcote, Smirke, Stothard, Westall, Howard, Romney, and others” [Preface]. There are as well numerous text illustrations grouped in 8vo. size. Most of the plates have some degree of foxing, mostly (though not always) limited to the borders. One of the plates illustrating Julius Caesar has a distinct but not strong tide-line. Bound in brown morocco with elaborate gilt borders to the boards, turn-ins with gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, raised bands with gilt decorations. This is a very discreetly rebacked copy with nearly the entirety of the original spine laid down. An attractive ex-libris is on the pastedown. Very Good binding.

Description
Bird Press, 2011. First edition. Dennerline, Thorsten. Block-printed wrappers, in chemise. 15 x 5 inches (90 x 130 mm.) Edition of 25 copies, woodblock prints and polymer letterpress details printed in black and red on Richard de Bas handmade paper by the artist. Artist Statement: Some time ago I suddenly got the urge to make a book about tattoos. I decided to think about tattoos not just as pictures or designs, but to consider them more broadly (scars, living drawing marks, body adornments, rites of passage, magic to improve the body’s function, ways to relieve or relive pain, signs of bravery, remembrances, cultural signifiers, or tribal/group markings). I also thought of the idea of drawing on skin and marking its surface as a way to be aware of it as a three-dimensional picture plane (with psychological implications). I have to admit that their association with crime and other “bad” things was enticing to me as well. This book of tattoo proposals is a simply a non-linear document of my own thinking about these ideas.

Description
New York: Frederick Warne & Co, 1911. First American edition. Original dark green boards ruled and lettered in white on front cover and lettered in white spine. Color pictorial label (measuring 2 5/8 x 2 1/4 inches; 67 x 57 mm.) on front cover within a blind arch-shaped panel outlined in blind. Color pictorial endpapers (Quinby Plate X). Minimal rubbing to lower corners and spine extremities. 84, [1], [1, blank]. Color frontispiece and twenty-six color plates (included in pagination). Black and white vignette on title-page. A near fine copy in the original (slightly chipped) glassine wrapper. "Beatrix Potter, writer of some of the most beloved children's books of all time, was a woman of immense talent, indefatigable spirit, and a generous heart...Although she grew up in London, she was deeply influenced by long family holidays in the countryside, first in Scotland and later in the English lake district. As was the custom in families of her class, she was educated at home by governesses. An eager student of languages and literature, she grew up loving classic folk and fairy tales...Her talent for drawing and painting was discovered early and encouraged" (Beatrix Potter Society). Her career began with the release of the now-beloved Tale of Peter Rabbit; and her subsequent works expanded into a magical world of anthropomorphic animals such as Tom Kitten, Squirrel Nutkin, and Benjamin Bunny. Quinby 20a. Linder, p. 429 (UK edition).

Slightly curled with some folds at corners, editorial overpainting recto, excellent contrast; overall excellent.
Description
New Haven, Connecticut, 1925. Single 8 x 10 inch photograph. Fotograms and date stamps verso with typed news caption affixed. Slightly curled with some folds at corners, editorial overpainting recto, excellent contrast; overall excellent.. A portrait of “Mike” Foon Kai-Kee (1903–deceased), a Chinese-American college baseball player at Yale University, from Dinuba, California (misspelled as “Dinerba” in the caption). The caption describes the third baseman as “the only Chinese playing on an American University baseball team [...] according to Joe Wood, Yale’s head coach, he is a marvel. Nothing gets by him in the field”. At the time, Chinese people were persecuted in the US—the Immigration Act of 1924, including the Asian Exclusion Act, had recently been enacted. Yale, however, already had a long history with the Chinese people; Yung Wing graduated in 1854 as the first Chinese person to earn an American university degree, and in 1878 Samuel Wells Williams became the first professor of Chinese language and literature in the US. Of interest to scholars of the Chinese-American experience in the early twentieth century.

A very good copy with some wear to the spine; feint tide mark to corners of the frontis. .
Description
London: J Mawman, 1804. First Edition.. original paper backed boards.. A very good copy with some wear to the spine; feint tide mark to corners of the frontis. .. 8vo. There are nine eng. plates. An important work in the history of thermodynamics that established several fundamental laws of heat radiation, i.e., that the emissivity and absorptivity for any surface are equal; that the emissivity of a surface increases with the increase in reflectivity; that the intensity of heat radiated from a surface is proportional to the sine of the angles of the rays to the surface. He was also able to distinguish between conduction and radiation of heat. Leslie's research and this book also played an important role in the early nineteenth century debate about whether heat was a form of motion or matter. In chapter 19 Leslie describes some of the apparatus, notably a photometer, that he used in his experiments (two distinct types are illus.). He appears to have been a particularly adept designer of experiments and apparatus. DSB VIII, 261 - 262 ; Cardwell, Watt to Clausius, pp. 107 - 112; Roberts p. 203.

About Fine
Description
Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. Minor wear, ABOUT FINE.Upon arriving from London in 1943, Angela Lansbury started her acting career as a leading character in the MGM film GASLIGHT. She was just 18, and for the next 20+ years played a great variety of characters on film and television. She conquered Broadway in 1966 with MAME, the Jerry Herman musical based on the novel (and film) AUNTIE MAME by Patrick Dennis. Written for Judy Garland (who sang the entire score at an audition), Lansbury was felt to be more able to endure the rigors of Broadway. She won the Tony Award for her performance and performed the role at the Winter Garden Theatre between May 24, 1966, and March 30, 1968.The musical role of Mame Dennis then became a plumb role for the middle-aged actresses of the day, with Celeste Holm, Ann Miller, Janis Paige, Ginger Rogers, Susan Hayward, Ann Southern and others taking it on in various productions. This image of Lansbury with Frankie Michaels as Patrick is from UPI and is stamped. The attached paper blurb is for the photo's use in an article from 1/28/71.

Description
[Washington, 1856. 8pp, caption title [as issued]. Disbound, mild toning. Good+. An insightful critique of the common political base shared by the Republican and Know-Nothing Parties, and their members' similar deplorable voting patterns. "The higher law doctrine of the Republicans" produced the political climate that permits Know-Nothings to disregard foreign-born citizens' and Catholics' "ancient privileges and rights of conscience as guarantied by the Constitution and laws of the United States." The author rebuts the disgusting charges levied by the Know-Nothings against Catholics, and claims the Republicans are, at heart, Know-Nothings as well. FIRST EDITION. Not in Sabin, Eberstadt, Decker, LCP, but well-represented in institutional holdings.
