Description
14/08/1877. In the 1840s, around the time Herman Melville was completing Moby Dick, whaling was a booming worldwide business and the United States was the global behemoth. The U.S. whaling industry grew by a factor of fourteen between 1816 and 1850, and New Bedford, Massachusetts, accounted for half of America's whaling output. In 1846, the U.S. owned 640 whaling ships, more than the rest of the world put together and tripled. Demand for New Bedford's haul came from all over the country. Sperm oil could lubricate fancy new machinery. Inferior whale oil could light up a room. Whale cartilage could hold together a corset or umbrella. At its height, the whaling industry contributed $10 million (in 1880 dollars), enough to make it the fifth largest sector of the U.S. economy. In the 1870s, however, the industry started to decline as whale resources decreased and the price of whale oil fell as a result of increased petroleum production. Capitalists began to funnel their cash into other domestic industries, notably railroads, oil, and steel. When New Bedford's whaling elite opened the city's first cotton mill and petroleum-refining plant, the handwriting was on the wall. By the late 1890s, the industry was virtually dead. The Bark Mary & Susan was a whaler whose career was cut short in August 1888 when it was lost on a reef four miles south of Point Barrow, Alaska, during a storm. The vessel had departed San Francisco on March 9, 1888 with a crew of 31 bound for the Arctic. At the time of the loss, the Mary and Susan was carrying $12,000 worth of “whaling supplies”. The vessel was valued at $8,000 and became a total loss along with her cargo. The crew was saved. Edward E. Jennings was a whaling captain with decades of experience. He was also something of an artist, and kept a journal that contains a famous watercolor.Document signed, as President, Washington, August 14, 1877, being a passport providing that “Leave and permission are hereby given to Edward E. Jennings, master or commander of the Bark called Mary & Susan of the burthen of 327 tons, lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for the Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, utensils and stores for a whaling voyage, to depart and proceed…on his said voyage…” The document is countersigned by William Evarts as Secretary of State, and by John P. Allen, Collector of the port of New Bedford. The passport is in four languages (English, Spanish, French, and Dutch), as befits a ship’s traveling in international waters.Passports for whaling ships signed by Hayes as President are very rare, which is hardly surprising considering that fewer whaling passports were being given out by the late 1870s. This is our first, and a search of public sale records going back over 40 years shows none ever having reached that marketplace.

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1889. First edition. Near Fine. First issue with 20 pages of ads at the rear, dated July, 1889. Bound in the publisher's original red cloth stamped in black on the front and rear panels, and black and gilt on the spine. A Near Fine copy of the book in remarkably bright, fresh cloth. Floral end papers toned, rear inner hinge professionally closed and just slight foxing to the closed text block. Internal contents are generally clean and unmarked. Stevenson's exciting novel of familial conflict and adventure set amidst and after the Jacobite rebellion of the mid-18th century. The book follows the Durie family who decide, with disastrous consequences, that in order to preserve their familial land and homes that one son will side with the loyalists and the other will join the Jacobite uprising. A world-wide adventure novel follows the fall-out from this decision to split a single family's allegiance. Stevenson wrote the book while travelling extensively in the US and the Pacific, and indeed the conclusion of the book features an exciting and memorable confrontation in the American wilderness. The Master of Ballantrae was adapted into a 1953 film, starring Errol Flynn. Near Fine.

Description
No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston (playwrights) New York: Lincoln Center Theater, 1991. Vintage original 22 x 14" (56 x 36 cm) theatre poster, USA. Archivally mounted on artboard, fine. Artwork by James McMullen. Due to an acrimonious falling out between Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, it took six decades for this play about African American life in 1920s rural Florida to finally get its world premiere. "Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life is a 1930 play by American authors Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. The process of writing the play led Hughes and Hurston, who had been close friends, to sever their relationship. Mule Bone was not staged until 1991, when it was produced in New York City by the Lincoln Center Theater. Hughes and Hurston began writing Mule Bone in March 1930. They wanted to write a comedy about African-American life that didn't consist of racial stereotypes. They decided to base the plot on a folktale which Hurston had collected in Florida during one of her anthropological field trips. The two writers dictated their work to Louise Thompson, who typed it. Their work was almost complete in June, when Hurston went away for the summer. She took her notes and said she would return in the fall, and they could finish the play. When Hurston came back, she would not return telephone calls from Hughes. She felt he wanted Thompson to be considered a third collaborator in the project, a proposal to which she strongly objected. Concurrently, Hughes was in the process of severing his relationship with their common literary patron, Charlotte Osgood Mason (Mrs. Rufus Osgood Mason). Reviewers have conjectured that Hurston may have been trying to protect her own relationship with Mason by shunning Hughes. Hurston submitted Mule Bone for copyright in October 1930, listing herself as the only author. In January 1931, Hughes learned that a copy of Mule Bone, bearing only Hurston's name, had been sent to the Gilpin Players, an all-black theater company in Cleveland, for their consideration. Hurston told Hughes that she had not sent them the play, which was true, but Hughes was furious. Hurston had sent Mule Bone to Carl Van Vechten, who sent it on to the Gilpin Players without her knowledge. Hughes sent a copy to apply for copyright under both their names. In the meantime, the Gilpin Players wanted to stage the play. The work was still somewhat rough, but Hughes was in Cleveland, and he offered to help rewrite portions of the play. Hurston sent a telegram advising that she refused to allow the production. A day later, she sent another telegram authorizing the production on the condition that she be allowed to work with Hughes on changes. That same day, Hughes received a letter from Hurston saying that no part of the play had been written by him. In light of all the off-stage drama, the Gilpin Players decided not to proceed with their production." (Wikipedia)

Carlo Ponti / Premier Prod.. No binding. Fine. London: Carlo Ponti / Premier Productions [Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer], 1967. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white glossy photo. With 1967 USA copyright info at bottom white margin, fine. Vanessa is seen in her modest topless pose for this groundbreaking film set in the 1960s mod culture of swinging London, in which a mystery evolves. As a way of bypassing the Production Code, MGM created Premier Productions, a dummy company which had no agreement or affiliation with the Production Code and, therefore, did not have to adhere to its standards. MGM did not have to cut the full-frontal nudity or other sexually explicit scenes and maintained all rights to the film. When the film opened to rave reviews and excellent box office numbers, this was considered the final blow to the Production Code's credibility and was replaced with a ratings system less than two years later. Because the film did not open with a studio logo, the version shown on Turner Classic Movies has a Warner Bros. logo at the start, it being the current owner of the film. Photo coded BU-3.

Description
Washington,D.C.: Department of Defense, 1950. Very good. 8¾” x 5¾”. Stapled pictorial selfwrappers. Pp. 15. Very good: some light creases, scuffs and spots to front wrap which has an Army/Air Force Recruiting Station stamp to top edge; one faint crease at edge throughout; lightly toned. This is a rare recruitment book, “calling young women” to join the United States Armed Forces in the early 1950s. Photographically illustrated with charming cartoons and informative details, the book outlines the myriad opportunities awaiting women in the service. The book began with a facsimile of a letter on Joint Chiefs of Staff letterhead from General Omar Bradley, which explained that “When women answered the emergency summons of World War II, they quickly proved their indispensability as members of the Armed Services.” It offered “new opportunities” as well as “lifelong satisfactions. Your field of service is as wide as the world.” Complemented by cartoon illustrations, the text covered numerous benefits of a life in the service related to education, job training, travel and recreation, as well as, of course, “dates,” “a happy marriage” and “future security.” It detailed the nine routes a woman could take, including the WAC, the WAVES, the Nurse and Medical Specialist Corps, along with “what it takes to make the grade” and what to expect “once you're in.” A great centerfold photographic spread revealed nine women happily performing different tasks, all “vital to your country,” and there was a list of several “other things that count,” assuring young ladies that “you can really have fun,” “the food is tops” and “you'll find it easy to keep fit!” Seeking women with “loyalty,” “character” and “efficiency,” the book vowed that “You will be the pride of a grateful nation.” An informative and illustrated enticement for young women to enlist. OCLC shows two holdings.

Description
New York: The Viking Press. Very Good-. 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. (with several torn pieces of the original dust jacket laid in) [a good sound copy, with only light wear to extremities and slight fading along the spine, BUT there is a good deal of pencil underlining throughout the text (see Notes)]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To my good friend / Charly King / from / Henry Borsook." The author, a professor of biochemistry at Caltech from 1929 until 1968, did significant work in both protein synthesis and, as an extension, of the role of proteins (and vitamins) in human nutrition. The present volume has been described as "among the first to present contemporary nutritional ideas to the layman, [showing that a good diet consists not of 'food' but of certain amounts of specific nutrients -- proteins, vitamins, calories, and the like." The inscribee and original owner of this copy, Charles King, was a Pasadena-based newspaperman, author and sometime playwright; the extensive pencil underlining throughout the text can be attributed to the fact that King was using the book as research for a book he intended to write (but never finished) on a related topic. (NOTE that the pieces of the dust jacket included here (all quite tattered) are: the rear panel, both flaps, about 1/2 of the spine and about 1/4 of the badly-torn front panel. The jacket is useful for information (including a long rear-panel blurb) but hardly a candidate for restoration -- although, if you're desperate for the book to have some kind of protective wrap-around, I will, upon request, do my best to assemble and arrange the pieces inside a paper-lined archival book jacket cover in such a way as to partially "reconstruct" it so that it will cover the book.) Signed by Author .
