Description
1906. [DRAWING TEXTBOOK] ASAI CHU^, artist. Chu^to^ ENPITSUGA TEHON Dai Yonshu^. To^kyo^, Yoshikawa Ko^bunkan, Meiji 39 [1906]. 2nd printing. Oblong 8vo., wrappers. 18.4 x 26 cm. Containing 10 sheets of sumi-e woodcut reproducing pencil sketches by Asai Chu^ and meant to serve as a guide for secondary students in their drawing classes. The Japanese Education Ministry, the Monbusho^, had commissioned Asai Chu^, one of the foremost artists and educators of the day to create a series of such handbooks for schools. This is the fourth volume. This brief notice is not the place to expand but it should be noted that this series represents an important milestone in the see-saw cultural battle being waged between artistic traditionalists and "modern" Western-style artists. The fact that the Asai Chu^ strove to familiarize students with the use of the pencil rather than the brush is significant in that context. Asai, himself, actually, though an accomplished Western-style oil painter who had studied in France was also a skilled traditional painter and a top-rank graphic designer, as well. It appears he believed in giving students all the tools, all the media, available for their expression. His textbook series are rightly famous though almost never found, being fragile to begin with and meant to be used by students. This volume is in very good condition - the pages are loose. It should also be noted that Yoshikawa Ko^bunkan was a famous house, capable of great skill in woodblock printing projects.

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1970 First edition, first printing. Publisher's gray cloth, stamped in black and red foil, with a variety of hand configurations to front board including the iconic Harvard fist design, red endpapers; in its original dust jacket designed by David Porter, with matching design to front panel. Fine book; very good unclipped dust jacket, with some rubbing and soiling to panels, and a few nicks to edges. Overall, a crisp copy. In this book, Steven Kelman, Harvard class of 1970, "records (from his own particular vantage point as a socialist and political activist opposed to violence) the events that led up to the violent occupation by Harvard students of a university building in April 1969-the occasion of the famous 'Harvard Bust.'" The 1969 Harvard strike centered on a number of concerns by Harvard students and members of the Harvard chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), most notably rent increases and Harvard expansion, the prominent role of the ROTC on campus (and, more generally, Harvard's involvement in the Vietnam War), and the lack of a Black Studies department at Harvard. On April 9th, 1969, several hundred protesting students occupied University Hall. Harvard president Nathan Pusey called in the police to remove the protesters, and a violent clash ensued, which resulted in many student arrests and injuries. This event was followed by an eight-day strike by students and faculty. In the wake of the strike, the ROTC was demoted to an extracurricular activity and eventually phased out of Harvard completely for the remainder of the Vietnam War, and a Department of Afro-American Studies (later re-named the department of African and African American Studies) was established. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
1935. Silver gelatin press photo from 1935 of Native American study hymnal in wait for influenza vaccine. 7" x 9" inches. Dated May 8th, 1935. Has press stamps and article clipping on back. Silver gelatin print. The article on back reads that an influenza epidemic was killing Native people in small Alaskan settlements like Point Barrow, and medical missionaries were advocating for the a vaccine rollout to meet the outbreaks. These girls were likely of the Iñupiaq tribe, who had learned to survive the harsh Arctic climate but were being ravaged by the outbreak influenza in their remote enclave. The photograph signals the piety of the Iñupiaq people as they waited for medical rescue. A Native woman sits in a tufted leather armchair with an open hymnal in her hands, eyes downcast to read its pages. Standing behind her resting their elbows on the chair back are three Native girls all sharing one hymnal above the woman's head. One girl looks at the hymnal while the other look to the camera, their faces a mix of questioning and serenity. The girl in the middle has her lips parted as if in song. All four wear cotton housedresses of the 30's with their hair parted down the middle and pulled back in low buns. Press photos were taken within tight timeframes by photojournalists for particular editorial boards and often influenced public opinion. This photo came a year after the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 which attempted to reverse some of the damage caused by earlier policies enforcing Native assimilation. Some very light discoloration on the white border does not effect photograph. Overall very good condition.
