Description
28/09/1824. In 1808, Taylor was commissioned a first lieutenant of infantry, beginning a military career that would last forty years. He first won distinction during the War of 1812 for his defense of Fort Harrison in Indiana Territory against an Indian attack and became the first brevet major in the U. S. Army as a result. He spent the next three decades policing the frontiers against Indians, serving in the Black Hawk War in 1832 and the Second Seminole War from 1835–1842.After the War of 1812, Taylor spent much time building up the frontier American establishments and bolstering the forts and other locations along the northern Mississippi River. In this, he reported to C.J. Nourse, assistant adjutant general.Autograph letter signed, Louisville, KY, September 28, 1824, to Asst. Adj. Gen. C.J. Nourse but addressed to Adj. Gen. Henry. ""Enclosed you will receive my monthly return account current and enlistment for the month of August last.""Capt. Brady and Lt. Allen of the 4th Regt. of Infantry a few days since reported for the recruiting service from Cincinnati; and have been placed on that duty at that place and at New Port, Kentucky."" Letter is lightly silked.George W. Allen appears on the rolls as First Lieutenant in the 4th in 1824 and would go on to fight with Taylor against the Florida tribes. Likewise, Francis W. Brady is likely the Brady mentioned here and he continued in the 4th through the Indian wars.Uncommon autograph letter signed from an earlier phase of Taylor's career.

Front free endpaper with bookplate of Benjamin Abraham. ◆Isolated small spots of foxing to margins, one state of one plate rather foxed, but still a lovely copy in fine condition--clean, fresh, and bright with virtually no signs of wear. This is bibliophile's edition of one of the most widely believed and successful of all literary hoaxes, in an American binding that could easily be mistaken for the work of a Parisian atelier. Before opening his Sansom Street workshop, binder Hyman Zucker trained and worked with the eminent Philadelphia bindery of Pawson & Nicholson, co-founded by James B. Nicholson (1820-1901), author of the first practical manual on bookbinding written in the United States ("A Manual of the Art of Bookbinding," 1856). Zucker issued a pamphlet introducing his new business, which would "Attend to All Orders for the Binding of Books in Every Style of the Art from Plain Half-binding to Elaborate Tooling Upon Full Bound Volumes." The present volume is clearly one of his high-end productions, with especially striking doublures. Fin-de-siècle Paris saw the emergence of a new type of book collector, as documented by Willa Silverman in "The New Bibliopolis." The scholarly bookworm who searched the stalls of the bouquinistes for 17th century volumes was replaced by the wealthy, educated man (and it was almost always a man) of refined taste, who disdained dull, calf-covered volumes in favor of new, exquisitely produced books. The leader of these new bibliophiles was collector and taste-maker Octave Uzanne, whose "aesthetic manifesto" promised, in Silverman's words, to require "illustrations, typography, paper, and bindings such as had never been seen before, produced with the most modern techniques." Publishers and bibliographic societies vied to offer exclusive limited editions with such distinguishing characteristics. This volume is a perfect example: not only does it feature illustrations in two additional states that demonstrate the stages of production, but it also contains an original, signed watercolor by Raphäel Collin (1850-1916), a successful painter and sought-after illustrator. The text--which is printed on paper with the sheen and feel of fine silk--could be considered the ideal content for a bibliophile's edition, as it combines two favored genres: Greek or Roman classics and Symbolist poetry. Containing 143 erotic prose poems with lesbian themes, "Songs of Bilitis" was represented to comprise translations from the Greek of a supposed contemporary of Sappho, when it was, in fact, penned by novelist and Symbolist poet Pierre Louÿs. Born in Belgium, Louÿs (1870-1925) relocated to France where, though an apparent heterosexual, he became familiar in homosexual circles and was known for close friendships with André Gide and Oscar Wilde. In 1891, along with Gide, Henri de Régnier, and Paul Valéry, Louÿs founded the literary review, "La Conque," where he published "Astarte," an early collection of erotic verse; his first great success, the present "Les Chansons de Bilitis," followed in 1894. Former owner Benjamin Abraham seems to have been an American collector--perhaps from Philadelphia--who followed the French bibliophilic fashion. The Morgan Library has nine books with his bookplate, all finely bound French bibliophile editions from the late 19th and early 20th century..

France: np, 1475. First edition. custom folder. Very Good. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS, WITH MINIATURE OF THE VIRGIN AND CHILD IN A QUIET, TOUCHING SCENE WITH TEXT FROM "OBSECRO TE" A finely illuminated leaf on vellum from a French Book of Hours, featuring a delicate miniature of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child set in an interior space. Mary, dressed in a blue robe with gold detailing, tenderly cradles the child on her lap, lovingly inclining her head toward him and wrapping him in her robe. The background shows open windows revealing a soft green landscape. The simple and sweet portrayal emphasizes the humble circumstances in which the Son of God was raised. The miniature is framed by a richly decorated three-quarter border of acanthus leaves, floral sprays, fruits, and leaves in green and gold on a hairline-scroll, a style consistent with high-quality Parisian or Rouen workshops. Above the text block appears a two-line initial O opening the prayer with a cross motif in blue and pink on a gold background. Recto contains 10 lines of text in a dark brown ink. The text below the miniature, in Latin, is the beginning of “Obsecro Te” beginning with the large 2-line initial O and reads as follows: Obsecro te, Domina Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, pietate plenissima, summi regis filia, Mater gloriosissima, Mater orphanorum, consolatio desolatorum, via errantium, salus et spes in te sperantium, Virgo ante partum, Virgo in partu, et Virgo post partum, fons misericordiae, fons salutis et Translation I beseech thee, Lady Holy Mary, Mother of God, most full of piety, daughter of the Most High King, Mother most glorious, Mother of orphans, consolation of the desolate, way of the straying, health and hope of those hoping in thee, virgin before giving birth, virgin during birth, and virgin after giving birth. I beseech thee font of mercy, font of grace and well-being Size of Leaf: 157 x 110 mm (approx 6.2 x 4.3 inches) Size of Miniature: 39x39 mm (approx 1.5 x 1.5 inches) Northern France, c. 1475. In 1963 she founded the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York, which presented the experimental music of the Fluxus group and Happenings alongside performance, kinetic art, and video art. There were fifteen festivals from 1963 to 1980. As well as being a star performer of avant-garde pieces, she was an effective spokesperson and negotiator for advanced art, charming the bureaucracies of New York and other major cities into co-operating and providing facilities for controversial and challenging performances. The years of the Avant Garde Festival marked a period of unparalleled understanding and good relations between advanced artists and local authorities. Friend and artist Jim McWilliams created numerous memorable pieces for her to perform at the New York Avant Garde Festivals, including Sky Kiss which involved her hanging suspended from helium-filled weather balloons for the Sixth Avant Garde Festival, and The Intravenous Feeding of Charlotte Moorman for the 1973 edition.
