Chandler was a Connecticut-born Episcopal priest and Yale graduate. His pamphlets were an important addition to the Church of England's arsenal in its dispute with Chauncy and others who resisted the Church's influence in America. Proof that politics follows religion, Chandler bitterly attacked the Continental Congress, cast his loyalties with England, and emigrated there in May 1775. What Chandler "and other articulate defenders of the status quo saw as the final threat was not so much the replacement of one set of rulers by another as the triumph of ideas and attitudes incompatible with the stability of any standing order, any establishment" [Bailyn Ideological Origins of the American Revolution 318]. 4to, original cloth with illustration on top cover, illustrated, x, 143, xiv pp. Binding worn, joints cracked covers are seperated from book block, spine torn or cracked a bit, endpapers and title loose, bookplate on front pastedown, some aging and browning, but plates are generally bright and clean. This is s somewhat scarce German natural history title with 124 chromolithographic plates. While the plates are largely not of colorful flowers, they are bright and attractive with nice coloring.
