Description
SOCIÉTÉ POUR L'INDUSTRIE CHIMIQUE A BÂLE. CIBA. Les colorants a l'acide au chrome et basiques. 54 pp. text and 17 pp. with mounted wool samples. 8vo, 223 x 140 mm, publisher's cloth. Basel: Societe pour l'Industrie Chimique, n.d. This is a fairly typical example of a dyeing sample book, with, in this case, particularly attractive samples. Like most of the genre, it is rare, with no listing in OCLC. Society for the Chemical Industry in Basel, known as Ciba, founded in 1884 is a Swiss company that later became Ciba-Geigy and eventually the pharmaceutical giant Novartis. As is typical of the European pharmaceutical giants, it began as a dyestuff manufacturer. Ciba evolved out of an earlier company founded by Alexander Clavel which focused on the production of fuchsine, a bright magenta dye, used for silk-dyeing. It also became incredibly popular for dyeing foods and beverages, including red wine.
