Description
Bologna: Nella Stamperia di Lelio dalla Volpe, 1736. 4to.  285 x 215 mm., [11 ¼ x 8 ½ inches].  [20], 346, [2], 128 pp.  Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, title-page vignette, 20 full-page engravings designed by G. C. Crespi.  Bound in contemporary vellum, red leather title-label on spine; minor soiling to vellum boards, an old  partial ring discoloring a small part of the upper board, perhaps from a glass being set upon the binding; some minor foxing the margins of the preliminary leaves.  Otherwise, a very nice copy First edition in verse of the famous work by G. C. Croce, with literary contributions by P. Riva, P. B. Balbi, G. P. Zanotti, Baraffuldi, and others, with 128 pages of notes by G. A. Barotti.  The 20 large plates, were both designed and mostly engraved by Giuseppe Maria Crespi, with some help by his student Lodovico Mattioli.  This edition had a wide reception and the text in ottava rima became the basis for numerous editions.  For its iconographic apparatus and the elegance of the printing it is considered the most beautiful Bolognese book of the 18th century and one of the most representative of the entire Italian 18th century. Gamba calls it a "Beautiful edition.   The twenty Cantos are by various fine minds, and among these are the two Zanottis, Baruffaldi, Zampieri, Amadesi, Flaminio Scarselli etc. Although Canto VI bears the name of Francis on its forehead, we know it was the work of Giampietro Zanottii. . . Giuseppe Maria Crespi, known as the Spaniard, invented the figures, which were carved in the pictorial style of Salvator Rosa; but attributing the work to Lodovico Mattioli to gain him fame and renown., 1 folding plate of ancient inscriptions, and 20 engraved tail pieces.” Cicognara adds, “This edition has become very rare due to the picturesque taste of the plates, and because the playful and pleasant Poem, having been in everyone's hands, has been worn out and been dispersed.” Gamba, Bartolomeo, Serie dei Testi di Lingua Italiana (1828), no, 1818.  Cicognara, Lodovico, Catalogo Ragionato dei Libri d’Arte, no. 1083.   .

Description
This is an early home-made book by an eighteen year old (or 17) Tom Yakutis, who went on to a highly successful career as an animator. His later credits include Popeye (1978 - 1981), Challenge of the SuperFriends, and many stints as director, designer, or artist on episodes of such beloved cartoons as the Jetsens, the Flintstones, etc. He began his career at Disney and worked at many of the major animation studios subsequently, including Hanna and Barbera, Warner Brothers, etc. Already in this illustrated manuscript we can see the polish of his renderings, with the mice and human characters endowed with real expressiveness. The short text is not really commensurate with the quality of the illustrations, and from the many misspellings we might wonder whether Mr. Yakutis was dyslexic. The story flows crudely, but thankfully, the drawings delight and more than compensate. The setting of this mouse tale at the Met is also interesting. There is an element of humor in the tiny creature living in so grand a place, and then upending it. At the time the Met loomed larger in the American landscape as a temple of high culture, and it was a time when top singers there had a presence in popular culture as well, with singers such as Rise Stevens, Laurence Tibbett, Lily Pons, Jamila Novotna, etc. enjoying significant movie careers in popular movies.

ON AN INDICTMENT FOR THE WILFUL MURDER OF MARGARET BURNS, AT THE ASSIZES HELD AT LANCASTER, ON FRIDAY, 2D SEPT. 1808, BEFORE THE HON. SIR. ALAN CHAMBRE, ONE OF THE JUSTICES OF HIS MAJESTY'S COURT OF COMMON PLEAS. TAKEN IN SHORT HAND BY WILLIAM JONES, JUN. Liverpool: Printed by William Jones. . . [1808]. Carson, James: REMARKS ON A LATE PUBLICATION, ENTITLED "A VINDICATION OF THE OPINIONS DELIVERED IN EVIDENCE BY THE MEDICAL WITNESSES FOR THE CROWN, ON A LATE TRIAL AT LANCASTER." Campbell, D.: REFLECTIONS OCCASIONED BY THE PERUSAL OF A PAMPHLET, ENTITLED, A VINDICATION OF THE OPINIONS DELIVERED BY THE MEDICAL WITNESSES FOR THE CROWN, (THE PROSECUTION) ON A LATE TRIAL AT LANCASTER. BY D. CAMPBELL, M.D. Liverpool: Printed by W. Jones. . . 1809. 53, [1] pp. A "hole in the stomach" killed Margaret Burns. Did Angus cause her death, by deliberately giving her a "solution of corrosive sublimate of Mercury" to drink? Or, as Angus alleged, did Margaret suffer from a chronic "obstruction in her female evacuations," which, when treated, did "rupture the coats of her stomach"? Much medical controversy accompanied the verdict: NOT GUILTY. "In a case that aroused much controversy, in September 1808, Liverpool merchant Charles Angus was accused of poisoning Margaret Burns, his deceased wife's half-sister and his children's governess. Burns was believed to be pregnant at the time of her death and Angus was charged with attempting to induce an abortion through the use of oil of Savin, a poison. Medical experts testified that, upon autopsy, no significant amount of the poison could be found in the body. Angus was found not guilty" [online site, National Library of Medicine].

Description
1923. Toronto: The Ryerson Press, n.d.[1923]. Original dark green cloth. This is a hybrid copy of the First Canadian Edition (from the second English impression) -- a copy planned for the UK domestic market but redirected (with "The Ryerson Press" binding and with cancel title leaf undated on the verso) to the Canadian market. Per Supino: The second impression was bound both for domestic issue [in dark green cloth] and for the first Canadian issue published by the Ryerson Press [in red cloth, with 1923-dated copyright page]... Due to considerable Canadian demand, a portion of the second impression was also devoted to a second Canadian issue with a cancelled [undated] title leaf [in dark green cloth]. The undated Ryerson copies in green are considerably scarcer than the standard Ryerson dated copies in red. This copy is in very good condition, without dust jacket (if ever so issued): there is a small scar in the spine just below the title panel, plus minor wear at the head of the spine. Supino A24.10.0 (this copy). Provenance: discreet bookplate of Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino.

Description
Bristol, England: RRB Photobooks, 2023. Softcover. VG. Gray wraps with color illustrations and black text. 176 pp. Color illustrations. Introducing British Documentary Classics from RRB Photobooks. This series aims to bring new life to some of the best British documentary photography. Expanding the print legacies of both well-known and previously overlooked photographers, out of print titles will be newly available and accessible to a wider audience. Each book in the British Documentary Classics series is reproduced to the same high quality we bring to all RRB publications, reduced in size to fit on the fullest of bookshelves and bound as a lightweight paperback. Peter Mitchell's Early Sunday Morning is made up of over 90 images, each one selected from a cache of five hundred negatives which had previously sat unseen for over 30 years. Early Sunday Morning, edited and sequenced by John Myers, shows a different Leeds to Mitchell's earlier publications. It is neither the sombre look at destruction seen in Memento Mori, nor the detached view of the man from mars of A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission, but a more intimate document of Mitchell's own Leeds. The book reveals the layers of the city's history, exposed by the changes to the urban landscape that epitomised the 1970s and 80s. Hundred-year-old terraces and cobbled streets sit flanked by concrete flats, with newly cleared ground to either side are presented with Mitchell's typical graphic framing. It is as if Peter Mitchell has taken the atmosphere and mood of Edward Hopper's famous painting and established it as a matter of documentary fact in the north of England at a moment when collapse can lead to further desolation or possible renewal. So these beautiful pictures are drily drenched in history, social, economic and photographic.
