Description
14/08/1841. Adams writes, “Enclosed is a draft dated this day…for 1500 dollars,…being the proceeds of the Bill of Exchange drawn by the purser of the exploring expedition Waldron in favor of Captain Wilkes, .” It was an era of American exploration, one that led to the Mexican War and the westward expansion to the Pacific Ocean. One of the foremost manifestations of this was the famed United States Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842, which was an exploring and surveying expedition to the Pacific and Antarctic Oceans and surrounding lands. President John Quincy Adams initiated the idea and requested funding of Congress in 1828, however, Congress would not implement funding until eight years later. In May 1836, the oceanic exploration voyage was finally authorized by Congress and created by President Andrew Jackson. Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes was placed in command of the 7-ship exploration. From 1838 to 1842 Wilkes and his expedition explored and surveyed the Antarctic Ocean and along the Antarctic barrier, where he reported land at a number of points in the region subsequently known as Wilkes Land. He visited islands in the Pacific, including Hawaii, Australia, and Tahiti, explored the West Coast of what is now the United States, including California and Oregon, then recrossed the Pacific and reached New York in June 1842, having sailed completely around the world. He was advanced to the rank of commander in 1843. From 1844 to 1861 he prepared reports of his expedition. The expedition is sometimes called the ""U.S. Ex. Ex."" for short, or the ""Wilkes Expedition"". It played a major role in the development of 19th-century science in the U.S., particularly in the growth of the American scientific establishment and in the then-young field of oceanography. Many of the species and other items found by the exploration helped form the basis of collections at the new Smithsonian Institution.Though funding for the exploration was authorized by Congress, the details of paying for it were more complex. Banks advanced the funds to Wilkes, but to be reimbursed the Secretary of the Navy had to approve the bank’s disbursements. To speed up the reimbursements, at least one bank in particular determined to use its representative in Congress - in this case John Quincy Adams, who as president had first advocated the expedition. It involved a bill of exchange - or a check - made out to Wilkes for his expedition by the Navy Department, with the funds laid out by the Old Colony Bank in Massachusetts, Schuyler Sampson, president, and ultimately payable by the government to that bank. Sampson then endorsed the bill to Adams’s order to get it collected more promptly, and the Navy Secretary approved the disbursement.Autograph letter signed, Washington, August 14, 1841, to Schuyler Sampson, bank president and Collector of the Port of Plymouth, Mass. “Enclosed is a draft dated this day no. 1308 from William Selden, Treasurer of the United States upon the Receiver General at Boston for 1500 dollars, payable at sight to my order and endorsed by me payable to you or your order; being the proceeds of the Bill of Exchange drawn by the purser of the exploring expedition Waldron in favor of Captain Wilkes, endorsed over to you and which you had transmitted to me for collection. Please to acknowledge the receipt of this letter…” Richard R. Waldron was the purser of the expedition, and thus the person the person on the ship principally responsible for the handling of money on board.A historically important letter relating to the Wilkes Expedition, which played a key role in the development of science in the United States. That it involves Adams - first proponent of the idea - is all the better. As for Wilkes, the Civil War brought him even more fame. When Wilkes, now an admiral, learned that James M. Mason and John Slidell, two Confederate commissioners to Britain and France, were bound for England on a British ship the Trent, he ordered the steam frigate USS San Jacinto to stop them. On November 8, 1861, San Jacinto met Trent and fired two shots across its bow, forcing the ship to stop. A party from San Jacinto led by its captain then boarded Trent and arrested Mason and Slidell. Wilkes was officially thanked by Congress ""for his brave, adroit and patriotic conduct”, but the British saw the affair as a violation of their neutrality. This almost led to war between the U.S. and Britain, but cooler heads on both sides prevailed, the Confederate diplomats were released to continue on their trip to Britain, and conflict was averted.

Description
London: Archibald Constable and Co. Ltd, 1907. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. xxx,(2),48pp. Illustrated with 44 full page plates, some of them in full color, as well as six illustrations in text. Original green cloth, gilt titles. The cloth shows wear at the corners, edges and spine tips, and some disintegration of the cloth finish on the boards, so the binding is only good. One of the plates has a couple of corner creases, else the text block is very good plus. This tomb was the most significant archaeological find in the Valley of the Kings before the finding of King Tutankhamun's tomb. Iouiya (also Yuya) and Touiyou (also Tjuyu) were the parents of Queen Tiyem the chief wife of Amenhotep III, and the great-grandparents of King Tutankamun. The frontispiece is a full color plate of the nearly complete chariot decorated with rosettes in gilded plaster. Theodore Davis provided the text on the finding of the tomb, Gaston Maspero provided notes on the couple; Percy Newberry described the objects found in the tomb, and Howard Carter supplied the illustrations. Rare in first edition. With the 'compliments' card of Theodore Davis laid-in..

Description
1784. First Edition. (SHIPLEY, William Davies). The Whole of the Proceedings at the Assizes at Shrewsbury, on Friday August the Sixth, 1784, in the Cause of the King on the Prosecution of William Jones, Attorney at Law, Against the Rev. William Davies Shipley, Dean of St. Asaph. For a Libel. Dublin: Printed by P. Byrne, 1784. Octavo, later marbled wraps; pp. 114. $1000.First edition of this important work about the 18th-century seditious libel trial of the Rev. William Shipley, which raised important questions about freedom of the press and the right to a jury trial.""The seditious libel trials of the 18th century constitute an important chapter in the history of freedom of the press and the growth of democratic government"" (Green, ""The Jury, Seditious Libel, and the Criminal Law""). The Rev. William Davies Shipley, the Dean of St. Asaph, had distributed a pamphlet entitled, ""The Principles of Government, in a Dialogue Between a Scholar and a Peasant,"" published anonymously but actually written by William Jones, Shipley's brother-in-law. The pamphlet advocated for a number of democratic reforms in parliamentary representation. Thus, Shipley was indicted for seditious libel. The famed barrister Thomas Erskine represented him in August 1784 at a trial that ""was to become one of the most noteworthy libel trials in British history… Erskine's eloquent arguments for the expanded rights of the jury in libel cases"" were rejected (McCoy S342). The jury found that Shipley had published the material, but that it was not libelous. Unsatisfied with the outcome, the judge, the Hon. Francis Buller, exercised his authority and overruled the jury to find the material libelous. Shipley was found guilty. However, the trial had brought the issue to light. Shipley's trial proved to be a crucial first step in reforming England's government to provide greater, democracy-enhancing freedoms such as freedom of the press. With two pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Without half title. This is the first and only edition, one of three issues, priority unknown. ESTC T127194. Very faint ink and blind stamps; ink shelf number on title page.Very occasional foxing and marginal dampstaining to text, slight staining to title page, light wear to edges not affecting text. Very good condition.

Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1861. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover. First edition of this relatively scarce title attributed to "A Roving Printer." It describes the travels of two young men who spent five years on a whaling ship that departed from the whaling port of New Bedford, Mass. It begins with a description of fitting out a whaler for a voyage, through its launch. The book then gives a detailed description of the boats and whaling apparatus. and the spotting of the first whale.Achapter is devoted to describing the sperm whale and the difference between it and the right whale. Most of the book details the voyages and places seen. They include Talcahuana, Pitt's Island, Guam, Rota, and many more. They write extensively about their interactions with Chinese merchants and sailors. At the book's conclusion its authors say that they thank their readers and strove to tell a yarn in plain, unvarnished style, laying no claim to literary merit, seeing to lay before the public a truthful statement of what they saw. Bound in textured green cloth with gilt titling to spine along with the image of a ship at sea. Binding is mottled and stained, with bumping to corners and cracks along the spine's top and bottom. With staining and spots to text page edges and margins with the text still quite legible. The rear free endpaper is torn in half and there is extensive staining to the publisher's statement appearing after the text and the rear pastedown. Gutters are cracked where book was opened flat. Many illlustrations throughout. With bookplate of Harold Lee Prosser II. Basically a good, readable copy of this interesting narrative of nineteenth century whaling. Measures 5 x 7.5 inches. 361 pages. MARIT/072825.

Description
New York: Time Inc., 1969 First edition. Publisher's pictorial wrappers, with a collage by Louis Glanzman featuring the John Harvard statue to the front wrapper. Very good, with rippling to front wrapper and tidemarks to verso, some tears near staples, subscriber label to front wrapper, and light toning to page edges. Overall, a bright copy of this issue covering the 1969 Harvard strike. This April 18, 1969 Time issue features a cover story on the 1969 Harvard strike titled "Harvard and Beyond: The University Under Siege" (pp. 47-56). The article somewhat demonizes the protesters and strikers, opening with the passage, "It finally happened to Harvard, too. In a sequence of confrontations that has now become a deplorable custom of American campuses, a small band of student rebels seized an administration building to protest university policies and to deliberately provoke a crisis." The 1969 Harvard strike centered on a number of concerns by Harvard students and members of the Harvard chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), most notably rent increases and Harvard expansion, the prominent role of the ROTC on campus (and, more generally, Harvard's involvement in the Vietnam War), and the lack of a Black Studies department at Harvard. On April 9th, 1969, several hundred protesting students occupied University Hall. Harvard president Nathan Pusey called in the police to remove the protesters, and a violent clash ensued, which resulted in many student arrests and injuries. This event was followed by an eight-day strike by students and faculty. In the wake of the strike, the ROTC was demoted to an extracurricular activity and eventually phased out of Harvard completely for the remainder of the Vietnam War, and a Department of Afro-American Studies (later re-named the department of African and African American Studies) was established. . First Edition. Original Wrappers. Very Good.
