Description
1937. First Edition. Signed. ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America. November & December 1936. [Washington]: United States Government Printing Office, 1937. Large quarto, original full brown pigskin, raised bands, mounted copper cover label, watered silk endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut, original half pigskin pull-off case. $18,000.Rare limited first edition, presentation copy, of Roosevelt's speeches at the Inter-American Peace Conference in 1936, one of only seven known copies produced in full pigskin (from a total edition of approximately 27 copies), with a special bound-in presentation leaf printed: ""To Lieutenant Colonel James Roosevelt United States Marine Corps Reserve,"" additionally inscribed on that page: ""from his affectionate father Franklin D. Roosevelt."" Text in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.Held as Europe seemed poised to descend into war, the ""Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Peace, held in 1936 at the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, at Buenos Aires, adopted a draft treaty for the peaceful resolution of conflicts between American states"" (Britannica). In his speeches, Roosevelt called for peace between the American nations, based on sisterhood, democracy, and a faith in God. He also stated his hope that peace in the Americas would inspire Europe to avoid war. This book includes Roosevelt's speeches on November 27, 1936 (Rio de Janeiro); December 1, 1936 (Buenos Aires); and December 3, 1936 (Montevideo), in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Publishing records at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library indicate that, ""In all, 75 copies were printed, 50 copies in full pigskin with double box type slipcase and 25 copies half bound with marbled sides and conventional single slip cases."" Subsequent sale receipts and invoices from the Roosevelt Library indicate that, while 50 copies in full leather were planned, only seven were ever produced in full leather (and another 20 in half leather). The full leather copies were intended for the South American dignitaries who hosted President Roosevelt on his 1936 trip. The balance of this edition ""remains unaccounted for,"" which is why only a handful of copies have ever been catalogued. The few copies that survive were given as Christmas gifts in 1936 to close associates of President Roosevelt. This limited edition is arguably the scarcest of all the Christmas gifts that President Roosevelt distributed while in office. Horowitz 77. This special presentation copy is inscribed to James Roosevelt, the eldest son of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor. Beginning in 1924 when he was a teenager, James Roosevelt became one of his father's most important political surrogates. He gave hundreds of campaign speeches and served as a trusted advisor throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Roosevelt even accompanied his father to the Inter-American Conference as a military aide. A contemporary article in Time magazine suggested that James Roosevelt be considered ""Assistant President of the United States."" In addition to a short period dabbling in the Hollywood movie business, Roosevelt went on to serve as a Marine brigadier general, a six-term Congressman, and a United Nations delegate.A lovely inscribed presentation copy in fine condition.

Description
[Jena, Germany]: [Frommann and Wesselhoft], 1805. First Edition. Near Fine. A rare presentation copy of the first edition of "the earliest known novel that centers on an explicitly male-male love affair," written by the cross-dressing Duke August Emil Leopold von Sachsen-Gotha (1772-1822). The ruler of a miniscule German territory during the Napoleonic Era, he was Queen Victoria's grandfather-in-law. With a presentation inscription on a preliminary leaf possibly in a secretarial hand reading, "Vom Verfasser [From the author] / Gotha 1805 / Karoline(?)." Lavishly bound in contemporary green morocco boards with elaborate gilt stamping, all edges gilt, inner dentelle and pink watered silk endpapers. Near Fine with light wear to spine label, contents bright but with sporadic foxing; housed in a recent custom cloth slipcase. With its backdrop of classical Greek mythology, this pastoral fable concerning two handsome shepherds who fall in love is among the first homoerotic works in Europe, and is a forgotten treasure of German literature. Described as "a kind of bucolic utopia, in which free homoerotic love is portrayed [...] the strange work attempts to represent real Greek life." Goedeke V, 472, 9, 1.- Hayn / Got. III, 375. - Wolfstieg 41633. A fervent admirer of Napoleon (who visited him repeatedly in Gotha), he corresponded with Jean Paul, Madame de Stael, Bettina von Arnim, and Carl Maria von Weber. Goethe once described the duke's preference for provocative appearances: "I have no complaints about him, but was always anxious to accept an invitation to his table, because one could not foresee which of the guests of honor he would like to treat relentlessly by accident." He often wore women's clothes and was called "Emilie" by his confidants.

Description
Madrid: Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes : Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional : Testimonio Compañía Editorial, 2002. color plates, cloth and vellum bindings. includes bibliographical references (pages 463-471); together in cloth coverd 2 part slip case. "930 exemplares numerados en arábigo ..." A facsimile reproduction of the original handwritten codex from 1540, currently preserved at the Museum of the Americas in Madrid. The Tudela Codex is a book created in Central Mexico in the mid-16th century. Its production involved the convergence of three distinct types of works. First, around 1540, indigenous painters were commissioned to record information regarding the Mexica religion using images and glyphs from a logosyllabic writing system (the *Libro Indígena*). Second, in 1553-54, a glossator-commentator undertook the task of writing explanatory commentaries for the depicted scenes (the *Libro Escrito Europeo*). Finally, third, sometime after 1554, a third section was added; this section-executed by an artist heavily influenced by Western culture-comprised various portraits of indigenous people as well as a section dedicated to the Templo Mayor (the *Libro Pintado Europeo*). Testimonio Compañía Editorial, Spain. The work presented in this book is a comprehensive summary of the study on the Tudela Codex and the Magliabechiano Group that the author defended to obtain his doctoral degree at the Complutense University. The author has undertaken an in-depth examination-covering every aspect-of a specific volume, the Tudela Codex, subsequently linking it to the entire body of works of similar characteristics to which it gave rise.

[Minneapolis, Minnesota]: Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1999. No. 102 OF 125 COPIES. 165 x 238 mm. (6 1/2 x 9 1/2"). [9] leaves. Publisher's cornflower blue textured paper boards, front cover with inlaid square of a lighter blue and gilt-stamped title, patterned cloth joints, two metal bolts. WITH 15 ORIGINAL ARTWORKS BY Bonnie Thompson Norman, Steve Miller, David Moyer, Ruth Lingen, Collen Dwire, Jack Molloy, Karla Elling, Beth Grabowski, James Horton, Elsi Vassdal Ellis, Audrey Niffenegger, Eric Bealer, Deborah Mae Broad, Joe Sanders, and Caren Heft. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the limitation page. Artist's statements by Steve Miller and Beth Grabowski laid in facing their illustrations. As new. This beautifully printed and handsomely presented book is an extremely pleasing fusion of word and image, containing poetry by Minnesota native Robert Bly accompanied by works of art on paper made expressly for this edition. According to the colophon here, this "collection of fifteen poems provides the conceptual basis for a collaborative collation of visual interpretations by fifteen innovative book artists and printmakers." The artwork is extremely varied, from moody woodcuts to experimental typography, and represents a range of talents brought together by a single poetic voice. The Minnesota Center for Book Arts is a premiere space for bibliophilic workshops, exhibitions, fellowships, and creative pursuits. Founded in 1983, it has a history of educating students, supporting established artists, and producing excellent work. Robert Bly (1926-2021) was an award-winning poet, translator, activist, and early advocate for the men's movement. The Poetry Foundations tells us that his "poetry was often categorized as part of the Deep Image school of writing, in which the poet employs a system of private imagery; however, Bly’s wish was not to create a personal mythology, but rather to describe modern American life through powerful metaphors and intense imagery." Bly's 1968 collection "The Light Around the Body" won a National Book Award, but he is perhaps best known for his exploration of modern masculinity in the controversial work "Iron John: A Book About Men.".
