Description
1909. COBURN, Alvin Langdon. Twelve Loose Views from ""London"" [London and New York: Duckworth and Brentano's, 1909]. Twelve loose plates, each measuring approximately 7 by 9 inches. $2400.Loose collection of 12 hand-pulled gravure plates from Coburn’s first, groundbreaking photobook, each prepared by Coburn himself, representing a revolutionary “transition from pictorialism to modernism… a shift in attitude that triggered the final push towards photographic modernism” (Parr & Badger).Poised at a crucial turning point in the history of photography, representing the ""transition from pictorialism to modernism, from 19th- to 20th-century photography,"" the work of Alvin Langdon Coburn illuminates ""the concern of the more advanced pictorialist with 'modern' subjects, namely the 20th-century city—a shift in attitude that triggered the final push towards photographic modernism"" (Parr & Badger I:74). Having learned how to print photogravures at London's School of Photo-Engraving, Alvin Coburn sought to perfect the process by setting up his own copperplate printing presses. London, his magnificent first book of photography, features ""luscious hand-pulled photogravures with black edges, tipped in on heavy gray marbled paper. Coburn made all of the gravures himself: etching on various papers until he got the print he wanted, and then supervising the entire print run. George Bernard Shaw wrote a foreword to London that the publisher for some reason declined to publish: 'This collection of photographs of London has been in preparation by Mr. Coburn for the past five years; but technically they represent the latest development of his art"" (Roth, 38). In Coburn's luminous photogravures of his own photographs, such as ""his famous view of St. Paul's,"" we see a ""cloud of smoke that… is a characteristic element"" in his work (Parr & Badger I:74). A key member of Alfred Stieglitz' Photo-Secession and a friend of many Cubists, ""Coburn had one foot in the 19th century and one foot in the 20th century… Coburn's London, for instance… depicts London—Westminster Abbey, Hyde Park Corner, Waterloo Bridge, Kingsway, Saint Paul's Cathedral—through a soft-focus painterly haze… Coburn used the transitory medium of photography to displace time, to arrest and thereby eternalize the current moment"" (Roth, 6, 38). London originally appeared with 20 mounted plates; these are 12 of those plates, titled on the verso in pencil. See Open Book, 50. Six plates with spotting, a bit of light edge-wear, two small scuffs to ""Houses of Parliament"" plate. A very good collection of loose plates from this magnificent photobook.

Description
1876 octavo, 4 pages, folded, lacking mailing envelope, neatly written in pencil, in very good, clean and legible condition. Stifler relates his impressions of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition: “… I am yet alive, but not very well, as the weather here, is too hot for a northern man. The thermometer stands at 100 in the shade … and today is considered a cool day. … I arrived here on Sunday night the 2nd at 12: 45. I have been visiting the Centennial every day since. I have not seen the 100 part of it. I don’t know whether I can see all or not. This is a big elephant and it will take some time to go all around. It is hardly necessary for me to make any attempt to describe what I have seen as it is almost impossible for me to do so just at this present time although you can rest assured that it is a grand thing and those that are fond of seeing curiosities and wonders of the world here is the place. You bet it takes stamps and a pealed eye and a lot of sand to get through safe. Those that don’t believe it let them come and see and satisfy themselves. There is plenty of stealing, robing [sic] and everything else that is mean is practiced here. My friend that came with me had $ 40 taken out of his pocket last Monday evening and so he was compelled to borrow some money and go home without seeing anything of consequence. Well, Sam, I presume you would like to know what I have seen &c some of the sights are enough to make any person heart sick among some of the curiosities is an Egyptian mummy, said to be over 3,000 years old, it is fearful. I also seen that large California tree it makes a comfortable sized house the bark on it is over 2 feet thick. I also obtained a specimen of the bark and wood, in connection with several other things &c. Well Sam, I was traveling some over the city this morning. Among some of the places visited was the old Penitentiary and the old Independence Hall and the museum …”
