Description
"I am brought in Debt upon the Treasury Books…by stopping my salary…and leaving me to maintain myself in London…while I was employed under the orders of the President in the affairs of the Maryland Bank stock…" WILLIAM PINKNEY. Autograph Letter Signed, Baltimore, January 11, 1815, to Richard Forrest. Complete Transcript "Baltimore. Jany 11. 1815 Dear Sir, I do not owe the Government one farthing as Commissioner under the 7th article of Mr. Jay's Treaty – and will not accept of any compensation upon that offer now. The way in which I am brought in Debt upon the Treasury Books on that score is by stopping my salary immediately upon the closing of the Commission and leaving me to maintain myself in London until the month of August following while I was employed under the orders of the President in the affairs of the Maryland Bank stock.- I sent you some time ago a full statement upon that business - with an account of the Credit which I expected and vouchers to prove that the General Assembly of Maryland made me the present which was vowed to me upon an assumption that I was to receive (or rather had received with Mr. Monroe's assent) my salary from the United States. I begged you to present this statement account voucher to the proper Department and I relied confidently on the justice of the government for the allowance of what I claimed. Please, do let me know what was done with these papers. In the meantime I repeat that I will not accept of any show of a compensation and that the placing the $1,000 and the balance of my salary to the credit of my Commissioners account is that and nothing more. I am , Dear Sir, Very truly yours, Wm Pinkney Richard Forrest Esquire" Historical Background Article 7 of Jay's Treaty called for five commissioners (three American two British) to hear claims for compensation from merchants whose ships and property suffered damage "during the course of the War in which His Majesty is now engaged." Commissioners were to sit for 18-month terms; Pinkney's stretched from 1796 to 1804. His service also included four years as ambassador to Great Britain (1807-1811), a year as Attorney General (1811) and military service in the War of 1812, during which he was seriously wounded. After the war he became U. S. minister to Russia, served in the Senate, and enjoyed a lucrative practice at the Supreme Court bar. He argued the winning side of two of the landmark cases before John Marshall, McCullough v. Maryland and Cohens v. Virginia.

De CANTOS, Paulo. Os reis do RISO.../ As leis do SISO! 212 pp. 5 illustrations. 8vo, publisher's wrappers. Lisbon: Póvoa de Varzim (Portugal): Tip. Livraria Povoense, ND. A spectacular example of eccentric modernist book making from the little-known Portuguese educator and amateur printer Paulo de Cantos who lived from 1892 to 1979. A collection of aphorisms about personality, based on the essay collection Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic, published in 1900 by French philosopher Henri Bergson. Although there are only 5 of de Cantos's illustrations, the entire book is a typographical jeu d'esprit. NOT LISTED IN OCLC

Description
Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1840. FIRST EDITION, First Issue (with imprint of Fagan and Collins at center of p. [2]; no copyright notice). 180 x 110 mm. (7 x 4 1/8"). Two volumes.. Attractive late 19th century scarlet crushed morocco, gilt, covers with gilt-rule frame accentuated with bow-arrow-tomahawk tool at corners, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with bow tool or crossed rifles at center, foliate spray at corners, gilt titling, turn-ins with frame of plain and dotted rules, foliate tool at corners, leather hinges, emerald green watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. BAL 3892. ◆Just the slightest hint of wear to joints and corners, occasional trivial foxing, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, the binding lustrous and the text especially fresh and clean. This is a decoratively bound first printing of the further adventures of Natty Bumppo, the hero of "Last of the Mohicans." The first American writer to gain widespread international recognition, Cooper (1789-1851) is the only author who can justly be compared to Scott in the field of the romantic novel. Although they are chiefly thought of as vehicles for romanticizing the American frontier, Cooper's works are serious explorations of the theme described by Day as a "search for enduring moral values amidst incessant change." The present major work is the fourth of Cooper's five famous Leather-stocking novels, all featuring the mythic wilderness hunter Bumppo, "the prototype of a recurrent figure in American fiction: the free, noble, solitary American who denies a safe and conforming life in order to maintain dignity, self-possession, and the natural inner discipline of true democracy." (Day) In this work, Bumppo saves Mabel Dunham, the daughter of an army sergeant at a frontier fort, from the ravages of nature and of lustful men, but when he is encouraged by the sergeant to marry Mabel, he predictably slips away into the wilderness..

Description
Peopria, Illinois: J. W. Franks & Sons, Printers and Binders, 1892. First Edition. Very good. First edition; 8 1/2 x 6 1/4; pp. [11], 10-210; gray cloth over boards, decorated with an elaborate border in black; gilt title to front board; small rubbed spots to tips of spine and corners; a bit of age-darkening and spotting to margins; small gift inscription to first blank leaf; in very good condition. According to the author, as it was a "Columbian year," she had prepared the book with the hope that it would inspire delight in Columbian studies. To make it more interesting, instead of presenting dry historical facts, she had chronologically arranged the chapters to include dramas, poems, music, etc., related to Columbus. In the meantime, at the first executive session of the Illinois Woman's Exposition Board in September of 1891, a proposal was made that a copy of every book written by women of Illinois would be collected and displayed at the Columbian Fair, to show the intellectual development of the women of the state. A copy of the current one would make the list and would be exhibited at the Exposition.
