Description
London: T. Wilkins, 1795. First British edition. First separate edition. Measuring 205 x 120mm and complete in 4 pages. A Fine example. Scarce in all formats, it was first printed in Vermont in 1793 and also contained a"faithful narrative...towards Polly Davis" (one copy survives at AAS); soon after, an edition was released from Maine containing "a poem on Christian Experience" (only two copies survive, both at NYPL). The present first British edition is also the first separately printed edition, recorded by ESTC at only 9 libraries. It has come to auction on only five occasions, with the present being the only example currently in trade. An Authentic Account records a brief encounter between a white Englishman and an enslaved Black man on a plantation in New York. Focusing their dialogue on the word of God and on salvation, the white narrator asserts that the two men could find common ground as "children of God...equally effectual with him" despite their diametrically opposed positions within the social power structure. "Neither the color of his body, nor the condition of his present life, could prevent him from being my dear brother in our dear saviour." Despite this argument for the spiritual equality of men of all races, the white narrator in An Authentic Account never questions nor seeks to subvert a power structure that would empower him while violently debasing Black people. Rather, he passively participates in the Evangelical attitude so common of the era, which considered enslavement an opportunity for saving the souls of uncivilized peoples who otherwise could not access the word of God. It was a position which abolitionist Evangelicals including William Wilberforce and Hannah More would decry as the height of hypocrisy in their own work during the period, calling upon Christians not only to see Black people as spiritual equals but also as humans deserving equal liberty and dignity. ESTC T224026.

Description
Odessa: Tip. Tovarishchestva "Bratia Kulberg', 1884. Softcover. First edition, n. d. (ca 1884); 9 1/2 x 7 1/4; pp. 37; pink wraps faded to dark yellow, illustrated with wood engravings; small loss of paper to tips of spine; crease to upper right corner; illustrated with drawings; overall very good condition. In English and Russian. An uncommon survivor of the 19th century, the catalog was published strictly for the Russian market of one of the biggest British manufacturers of agricultural machinery and general engineering products from the late 18th until the end of the 20th century. The enterprise was started by Robert Ransome (1753-1830) in the 1780s, when he was casting ploughshares in a disused malting in Ipswich and discovered, entirely by accident, chilled casting - the process of hardening a metal's surface by initiating contact between molten metal and cold metal. By 1851 export trade was initiated, including opening a branch establishment in Odessa, and by the early 1900s it would become much more important than the home market, with more than four-fifths of the threshing machines and steam engines sales being exported abroad. The catalog contains drawings and descriptions, on facing pages and both in English and Russian, of spare parts for the company's steam threshers. Not in OCLC or in the trade (as of January 2015).

Description
[Providence], 1855. Folio, 25 manuscript pages in ink of accounts; stiff marbled paper wrappers; very good. An account book from the provisions business of Schofield & Rhodes in Providence. The business opened in 1855, at 118 Benefit Street with investments in foodstuffs and clothing from Thomas Harris Rhodes (1800-1876) and Albert G. Schofield (b. 1809). The account book shows items such as flour, sugar, tea, raisins, molasses, coffee, cotton sheeting, calico, etc. and the names of the purchasers. Albert Schofield was apparently the same business man and teacher who founded Schofield's Commercial College at 81 Westminster Street in Providence in 1846. His college was successful and lasted a number of years. Rhodes was a bank cashier at State Bank at the time the two went into business together. The business struggled early on since an accounting dated July 1, 1856, shows an overall loss of .45. They began with an investment of about $8000. The last three pages of the book are copies of promissory notes; " Providence, RI. March 1, 1856. $210. Sixty days from date for value received I promise to pay to the order of Scholfield & Rhodes Two Hundred and Ten Dollars at the Arcade Bank Providence. Ralph Stodard." Several dozen financial interactions are shown.

Near Fine in Very Good+ dj
Description
New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1937). First Edition. Hardcover. [a lovely clean copy, with no significant wear but the very faintest spotting to the bottom page edges (less squinty eyes would call it Fine with nary a pause); jacket lightly soiled at the rear panel, with some light wear and a couple of tiny tears along the top edge, very attractive nonetheless]. "A Panoramic Novel," sayeth the dust jacket -- which is another way of saying that the ever-popular Miss Baldwin (or her publishers) was not above pulling one of the oldest New-York-novelist tricks in the book, that of concocting a stew of "interrelated stories" about a wide array of urban characters, from sophisticated Social Register types to "racketeers, taxi-drivers, maids, actors, secretaries, and interns," in the hope that it would magically bubble into a novel with a unifying central theme. The double-copyright date, though (1936 and 1937), blows its cover: all eight stories in this book were published in Cosmopolitan as novelettes (most under the same titles) from October 1936 through May 1937; were they "interrelated" at that point, I wonder, or was their anthologization the equivalent of a literary shotgun marriage? (One story, by the way, "Comet Over Broadway," was filmed under that title in 1938.) And just to tie up the packaging in a nice neat bow, at the very end of the book is a three-page preview of her next novel, "Twenty-Four Hours a Day," also blurbed on the rear jacket flap. .
