Description
1 measure from the opening of the first movement. Notated in black ink on an album leaf, 203 x 123 mm. Dated "Montevideo le 27. v. [19]36." Inscribed to the Uruguayan political figure Alejandro Zorrilla de San Martin (1909-1987), prominent member of the Uruguayan National Party, with a reproduction photograph of Stravinsky and his son, Soulima, to head. Slightly browned; horizontal crease to upper portion just below Stravinsky's signature; manuscript identification and minor remnants of former mount to verso. The Firebird (L'Oiseau de feu; Zhar-ptitsa), a fairy tale ballet in two scenes, was first performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris at the Opéra on 25 June 1910, conducted by Gabriel Pierné. The original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with sets and costumes by Alexandre Benois; this seminal work led to further important Stravinsky-Diaghilev collaborations including Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913).

Leipzig: Jul. Heinr. Zimmermann [PN Z. 5021], 1911. Folio. Original publisher's green wrappers printed in dark brown. [1] (title printed in dark brown), 2-104, [ii] (blank) pp. Title in French and Russian to upper. Publisher's catalogues of the works of Balakirev and Liapounov to verso of upper; "Interessante Klaviermusik" to recto and verso of lower wrapper. Wrappers slightly worn and foxed; small ink stain to head of upper with small handstamp to foot. Uniform light browning; occasional foxing, primarily to title and several blank margins. First Edition. Balakirev began his Piano Concerto in E-flat major in 1861-2 but left it incomplete, resuming work on it in 1906. It remained incomplete at the time of his death, but was finished by his devoted pupil and friend, composer Sergei Lyapunov. "Balakirev was a crucial figure in Russian music. He extended and developed the fusion which Glinka had accomplished between on the one hand the common-practice music of his day and on the other some musical elements of Russian character and others of a boldly experimental nature. Balakirev established patterns which could be used to express overtly national feeling in music. In his own compositions he demonstrated how this could be done, laying the basis for a rich repertory spanning all the contemporary genres." Stuart Campbell in Grove Music Online.

Description
1845. GRANDVILLE, J.J. Cent Proverbes. With text by Amadee Achard, Taxile Delord, Emile Forguesvand Arnould Fremy. [4], 398, [2] pp., illustrated with wood engraved frontispiece, 50 full page wood engravings hor-texte, plus head-and-tail pieces by Grandville. 8vo, 228 x 140 mm., bound in publisher's polychrome cloth binding. Paris: Fournier, 1845. A fine copy of this delightful Grandville work, preserved in the scarce publisher's polychrome binding. While this book lacks the surreal qualities of Un Autre Monde, the presence of a substantial number of anthropomorphic illustrations in the manner of those which had appeared in Scenes de la vie privee et public des animaux, elevate it above the typical "romantique" book, and make it a worthy addition to the Grandville oeuvre. An exceptionally clean copy. Renonciat 178-183.

12/09/1866. This letter comes from an old collection and has not been on the market in generationsAlfred Lord Tennyson long reigned as Poet Laureate under Queen Victoria. His career took off in 1850 after the publication of In Memoriam, followed by Maud, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and Idylls of the King. The Princess is a poem of the forbidden love between Prince and Princess. In 1866, one of his friends planned a trip to the United States and offered to send him what was then a luxury and oddity: a pipe used by the Powhatan Native Americans. Tennyson was a well-known smoker and relished the gift.Autograph quotation signed and Autograph letter signed, September 12, 1866, to a Mr. Thompson. ""Thy voice is heard thro' rolling drums. A Tennyson.""""There is the line for you. I have no friends I know of either at Liverpool or Southampton to whom you might address the Powhatten pipes. I should think you had better send them direct to me at Farringford. Many thanks for your kindness. I trust you will have better weather across the Atlantic than here at present. I can't recollect such another troubled September.""All happiness to you and my wife's regards. The two boys are at school or would add them.""

xii+[13]-563+[15 ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams and bibliography. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind-stamped logo to front and back covers and ruled edges. (Betts:1-1; Betts:5-2; Betts:25-3) First edition.Includes 67 games from the first American tournament. The first American Chess Congress was held in New York City from October 6th to November 10th, 1857. Organized by Daniel Willard Fiske, the tournament was designed as a knockout format similar to the one seen at London in 1851, with the provision that draws did not count and had to be replayed. The first prize was $300. The sixteen best American chess masters were invited to participate in the event, including Paul Morphy and Louis Paulsen. Morphy dominated the event, sweeping each of his opponents until Paulsen in the final. Despite dropping one game in the final match, Morphy finished the tournament with an astounding 14 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss. Not one to accept money for chess, Morphy turned down the cash prize in exchange for a silver tray, pitcher, and four goblets in its place. His victory cemented him as one of the best players in the world (if not the best), and prompted his tour across the Atlantic where he faced the best Europe had to offer in a series of matches, winning each and every one of them. Not long after his return to America, Morphy would retire from chess. Included is "The History of the Automation Chess-Player" by George Allen, "Incidents in the history of American Chess", "Introductory sketch of the History of Chess", "Paul Morphy", "Chess life of Benjamin Franklin", "Lewis Rou: the Rou Manuscript", "Chess in Philadelphia", "Chess in Boston", "Lowenthal's visit to American", "Chess in New York", "Chess in New Orleans". Also contains 53 problems with solutions, a bibliography of chess works published in the Untied States to 1859 and a general account of the tournament proceedings.Condition:Spine heavily soiled and rubbed with the gilt truly dulled, previous owner's name on front end paper, some rippling to cover with corners rubbed through

"Bingham is a little like the gambler. Crowded together in their gulch without bringing-up or ear-washing, the people of the camp have evolved into a community, though it took a long time and there were a lot of graves in the local Boot Hill before the transformation came about. Maybe the copper sulphide in the soil destroyed the germs of evil in those old rowdies as it destroyed the typhus germs in the garbage-laden creek. Or maybe the camp simply grew up. At any rate Bingham gets along better with the rest of the state now." - Wallace Stegner 'Mormon Country' p.268.

[nice tight copy, uncreased spine, light external scuffing to covers, some faint diagonal soft creasing at bottom right corner of front cover, agency name rubber-stamped on front endpaper]. Mass Market PB "An Original Gold Medal Book," one of many turned out by this prolific author of trashy pulp fiction during the 1950s and 1960s. This one is about a "guy who was known as Big Daddy Sex, sniffing out all the broads for miles around," and with some serious anger-management issues, to wit: "He'd been a blister of hurt and rages, ready to burst, and even then she'd [his long-suffering lover, self-described as his "doormat, secretary, armor, weapon, everything you needed"] known he needed something more." (The "something more" being Joanne Stark, "tease and tramp," whose "wildness was enough to warn a guy smart enough to sense the warning" -- which our protagonist, Clay Stuart, apparently was not.) .
