He attached himself to those who were styled ‘Brownists,’ who, under the name of ‘Independents,’ afterwards played so important a part in English history, and who were the ancestors of the ‘Congregationalists’ and other free churches of the present time. He and Francis Johnson founded an an independent church in Amsterdam. A falling out between the two created two separate congregations, whom they styled respectively Franciscan Brownists and Ainsworthian Brownists. Ainsworth is among the authors whose work traveled to New England in 1620 with the Pilgrims. Practically entire title page of Genesis volume laid-down, with contemporary light owner inscription of Henry Martin dated 1715, first few leaves chipped at lower corner with no loss, a few leaves, D-E marginal damp stains, Leaf F with upper corner torn away, approx. 5 x 5 centimeters; original rear free endpaper with births and deaths of Walpole and Pim families. Dawn is the first of three books in the Xenogensis series, followed by Adulthood Rites (1988) and Imago (1989), which were collected under the title Lilith's Brood in 2000. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (commonly referred to as the MacArthur "genius" grant), which she received in 1995. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Description
Small 8vo, blind stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, 214 pp. Binding leaning a bit, some wear to binding, rubbing to extremities, bookplate on front pastedown, some aging and browning; otherwise very good. This copy is from the library of Jack London, and has his bookplate on the front pastedown. The Adams (1808-1878) was born in Salem and was opposed to slavery, but felt some of the abolitionists were exaggerating what was happening in the south. However, some of his comments would suggest that not everything was being exaggerated. In is chapter on Slave auctions, he describes how he felt when a one year old child was being sold, and taken from its parents. He also shares his thoughts on the "peaceful" dissolution of the Union because of slavery, which he did not think was possible. A rather scarce title.

This broadside is 16½x10¼", and is tipped into an archival rag mat. Very slight aging, though delicate this ad is in wonderful condition; near fine to fine. The Aiken Knitting Machine Co was located in New York City with their factory in Franklin, N.H. The printed images show their various types of knitting machines, and winder for spooling yarn, with the direction to "Please Put Up In Your Office". The Aiken family moved to New Hampshire in 1938, and were fairly well known industrialists and inventors. In May 1855 Jonas B. Aiken secured a patent (Patent 12933) for a knitting machine. Their machines appeared to get a lot of good press in the 1860s, and they seemed to have established a very respectable business.
