An incomplete run: Nuclear Information, August 1963; and Scientist and Citizen for May/June 1965; April and May 1966; January 1967; January/February and December 1968. A publication of the Committee for Nuclear Information, a non-governmental organization devoted to reducing the danger of nuclear war and informing the public of the dangers of nuclear technology. The first issue here was published during the Kennedy administration, the same month that the first Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was signed between the U.S., the U.K., and the Soviet Union, an effort that had been underway for more than eight years at that point. Commoner was one of the most well-informed and highly educated of the anti-nuclear activists at that time, and as a result he retains a unique place in the history of American environmentalism: when he died in 2012, the New York Times obituary characterized him as "a founder of modern ecology and one of its most provocative thinkers and mobilizers in making environmentalism a people’s political cause."
