Description
Basileae: Ex officina Heruagiana, per Eusebium Episcopium, 1572. 385 x 250 mm. (15 1/4 x 10"). 18 p.l., 744 pp., [16] leaves; 368 pp.; 218 pp., [13] leaves.Edited by Hieronymus Wolf and Vincentius Opsopäus. IMPOSING CONTEMPORARY CALF, COVERS WITH GILT FRENCH FILLET BORDER, CENTRAL COAT OF ARMS OF JACQUES AUGUSTE DE THOU (as a bachelor) within a laurel wreath, raised bands, spine gilt in double-ruled compartments with de Thou's cipher at center (older repairs to front joint and to two-inch tear on front cover). Printer's device on title and final pages. Dibdin I, 478. ◆Front joint with three-inch crack at tail, a little fraying at head of spine, a few minor marks to cover, but the binding still sturdy, the leather lustrous, and the gilt bright. Leaves a shade less than bright (due to paper quality), with a dozen or so quires a little browned, isolated paper defects to margins, additional trivial imperfections, otherwise a fine copy internally, clean and fresh with comfortable margins. This Latin and Greek edition of the works of Demosthenes and Aeschines, fourth century B.C. Greek orators and rivals, comes from the illustrious collection of French historian, bibliophile, and statesman Jacques-Auguste de Thou, who assembled one of the greatest libraries of his day. Our binding bears the arms and cipher used by de Thou as a bachelor; after his marriage in 1587, he combined his arms with those of his wife in his supralibros and incorporated her initials in the cipher. Demosthenes (384-322 B.C.) was as famous an orator in the ancient world as Homer was a poet, and though he wrote no books, his many speeches had considerable political importance in his time, were recorded and collected, and have been much analyzed by generations of students of language and rhetoric. Often printed, as here, with the works of Demosthenes were the three extant orations of Aeschines (ca. 390-314 B.C.). He was the arch-enemy of Demosthenes, and one can see in Aeschines' public life and orations a concerted attempt to discomfit his rival. In his oration "Against Ctesiphon," for example, Aeschines argues that a crown intended for Demosthenes to honor his services to Athens ought not to be awarded. As an orator, he was possessed of a learned and impassioned eloquence, but, in comparison with Demosthenes, he lacked taste, judgment, and moral authority. A pupil of Melanchthon and a major scholar of the period, Hieronymus Wolf (1516-80) came to prominence, according to Sandys, with his editions of Suidas, of Isocrates (beginning in 1570), and of Demosthenes. For the text here, he relied on a manuscript in the Augsburg Library, the codex Augustanus primus. Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) served French kings Henri III and Henri IV, negotiated the Edict of Nantes (one of the earliest decrees of religious tolerance in Europe), and produced a history of contemporary France noted by modern historians for its scientific and detached approach, but condemned in his day for its objective view of Protestantism. A devoted bibliophile and scholar, he amassed a library of more than 9,000 volumes by the time of his death. Bindings from his collection continue to be very actively sought after..

Description
1865. First Edition. (CONSTITUTION). Journal of the House of Delegates of the State of Virginia. for the Session of 1864—5. Alexandria: D. Turner, 1865. Octavo, original front printed wrapper respined, renewed rear wrapper, original string stitching; pp. (1-3), 4-83 (1). Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $4500.First edition, one of 500 copies, of the momentous Journal featuring its February 9, 1865 entry on the Alexandria, Virginia government's passage of the 13th Amendment mere days after the U.S. Congress, the first of the four Unionist southern states to pass the Amendment, also featuring the governor's Message noting: ""though we have in inherited from our fathers of the revolution the blessings of a great nation, yet they also left to us an inheritance of African slavery which has proved a bitter dreg in our cup of freedom,"" a vital record of forces for constitutional change near the end of the Civil War.Soon after the 1860 election, amidst southern secession, ""the great questions of union or disunion, war or peace, hung in the balance. Probably the crucial weight on the scale was Virginia… as long as the federal government did not seek to coerce the states, Virginia secessionists were unable to achieve a majority. When Lincoln responded with force to the attack on Fort Sumter, however, the vote in Virginia went in favor of secession."" Subsequently a Virginia convention ""met in Wheeling on May 13, 1861… [it] elected as Governor Francis Pierpont, a western Virginian and ardent Unionist, and arranged for the creation of a legislature to replace the body sitting in Richmond… in July 1861 the new legislature met at the 'Restored Virginia' capital of Wheeling in a special session called by Pierpont."" Against its ""claim to represent a majority of Virginians,"" a new state of West Virginia was created in 1863, and Pierpont's government moved to Alexandria to govern areas of Virginia under Union occupation (Harrison, Lawfulness of the Reconstruction Amendments, 380-83).Scholars observe that the 13th Amendment, its fellow amendments and Reconstruction, as ""both a political process made possible by military successes and constitutional thought, grew from wartime as well as post-Appomattox developments"" (Hyman and Wiecek, Equal Justice, 247). This rare first edition of Journal of the House of Delegates substantiates that in documenting passage of the 13th Amendment by Pierpont's Virginia government mere days after the U.S. Congress passed the Amendment on January 31, 1865. With that, Virginia became the first of the four Unionist southern states that ratified the 13th Amendment. Of those, Louisiana followed on February 17, with Arkansas and Tennessee that April. The 13th Amendment is the focus of the Journal's entry for February 9, 1865, which states: ""Mr. Brownley called up Senate bill No. 12, entitled 'An Act to ratify the joint resolution of Congress, passed January 31, 1865, proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States.' The bill was read the first and second time… and the rules were suspended, and the bill read the third time… and the bill passed."" Also notable herein is the complete printing of Governor Pierpont's opening Message, where he notes: ""though we inherited from our fathers of the revolution the blessings of a great nation, yet they also left to us an inheritance of African slavery which has proved a bitter dreg in our cup of freedom."" He speaks at length of the rights due people of color and the abolition of laws, such as those that prohibit ""negro testimony"" or proscribe a ""different punishment… [for] persons of African dissent"" from that of ""white persons.""""The legislature met for its second session on December 5, 1864… The governor's message was a long and important document and indicated the changes of opinion that the war was bringing about. Pierpont gave his views upon the all-important negro question. He congratulated the constitutional convention, which had met in the spring, on the abolition of slavery in Virginia, and advocated sweeping changes in the laws concerning negroes. The act prescribing different punishments for blacks, should, he said, be altered in accordance with the amended constitution, as well as the law for apprenticing them. The law prohibiting the education of negroes should be abolished… His language was, on the whole, very moderate. He advised the legalizing of the marital relations of negroes, and, most important, the establishment of public schools… Notwithstanding the governor's advice, no acts of great importance passed the legislature… On February 9, 1865, the assembly ratified the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. It adjourned on March 7"" (Eckenrode, Political History of Virginia During the Reconstruction). Faint ""U.N.C. Duplicate"" stamp to front wrapper.Text fine; just a bit of faint soiling and a tide line to fragile front wrapper. An excellent copy of this elusive item.

[16], 23 pp., 24-166 ff., 18 pp., chiefly color illustrations. Folio, 295 x 215 mm., publisher's illustrated wrappers. Tokyo: Japan Sericultural Association, 1904. A fine copy of this unusual example of Japanese chromolithography. The work contains 143 pages which each provide information on a different silk producer together with their colour-printed trade card, with three actual cards laid in. A splendid visual survey of a segment of Japanese industry at the height of its power. The spine has been reinforced with tape, otherwise a fine copy of a rare book printed in a technique not usually associated with Japanese book production. OCLC lists just 7 copies in the U.S.

Description
Pittsburgh: Committee to Defend the Pittsburgh Five, 1953. 24pp. Original pictorial self wrappers, stapled. Minor toning and handling wear. Very good. A scarce pamphlet pertaining to the controversial legal battle pertaining to one of the Pittsburgh defendants in a notable Smith Act case. Careathers, a longtime Communist activist, was accused by an informant of plotting violence with other Communists, collectively known as the Pittsburgh Five. Here, Careathers provides a passionate defense by detailing his life struggles, his positive history with the Communist Party (which Careathers believed was "sincere in fighting for the rights of the Negro people"), his experiences as a labor organizer in the steel industry, his "fight for Democratic rights" against those "trying to outlaw and smash the Communist Party," his "fight for peace," his opposition to war and fascism, and his support for socialism. A truly erudite defense through careful argument of issues and experiences relevant to the Smith Act defendants. The Alien Registration Act (or Smith Act) of 1940 required all adult non-citizens in the U.S. to register with the federal government and also set penalties for advocating for the overthrow of said government. The government used it mainly to harass and imprison Communists. After being sentenced to five years in prison, the Pittsburgh Five launched appeals that ended up reaching the Supreme Court. The informant was shown to be an untrustworthy witness, and the Smith Act convictions were tossed. In a 1957 retrial, a federal judge threw out the charges and the prosecutors dropped the case. Fewer than a dozen copies in OCLC.

Description
This well-known French poet, novelist and playwright was elected member of the Académie française in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS, 20pp (rectos only). 8" X 10 3/4", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1890]. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good, showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean," penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft, for it contains crossouts, insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel, for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title, one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress, for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further, the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909," although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf, Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy of further research.

Description
London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1869. Hardcover. Very Good. Josiah Gilbert's richly illustrated combination of travel book and art history, building upon his previous travels in the Dolomite Mountains. From his preface: 'The charm is due to a touch of Italian softness tempering Alpine severity and Dolomite grandeur. The interest centres in Titian. the scenery of Cadore and its neighbourhood inspired Titian's landscape; its remote villages still treasure in their churches relics of his pictures; its annals supplied him with the subject of one of his greatest, though, as it has long perished, one of his least known compositions; while to us they curiously illustrate the life of a small mountain republic from the earliest times.' [i]-xiv, [1] 332 pages, 2 pages of ads with favorable reviews of Gilbert's previous book. 34 illustrations, including the frontispiece of 'Titian's Bridge' and a folding 'Facsimile of Titian's original Design for his "Battle of Cadore"' printed by Cowell's Anastic Press, Ipswich, as well as woodcuts printed with the text. Green cloth covers with gilt rule and image of a mountain taken from Titian's 'Omnia Vanitas'. Wear to the extremities, with loss to the lower front corner, rear hinge starting. Small bibliographic description from a previous seller on the front pastedown, occasional mild foxing. 10.75 x 8

Description
Richmond: N.A.A.C.P., 1957. 8vo, wraps, 30 pp. Some light wear, staple holes to edge, original owner’s address and postage mark on back cover, overall very good plus. An uncommon NAACP publication, published right after the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, with a range of articles on racism and segregation in Virginia and the efforts to desegregate schools there. The pamphlet is made up of several essays, entitled “Behind the Segregation Curtain,” “The N.A.A.C.P. - Defender of Constitutional Freedom,” “The Truch about what led to School Cases,” “Lookng at Work of the NAACP in the Fight for Integrated Schools in Virginia,” “Integration - An Avenue to Liberty for Both Groups,” “The Way to Genuine Good Race Relations in Virginia,” and “Our Way of Life in Virginia.” The essays are all written anonymously. The pamphlet argues for the use of reason in reversing racial prejudice and suggests appealing to the intelligence of people as a means for combating the problem. Uncommon, with four copies held institutionally.

Jim Anderson. No binding. Fine. [New York: Jim Anderson, 1977]. Set of two vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white photos, both with holograph notes on verso "Credit Jim Anderson". After the Stonewall riots, gay activism very quickly began to make its way to the streets of New York City, such as at this gay rights demonstration in NYC's Greenwich Village on June 8, 1977. Slogans on signs like "Gay Is Good" and "Closets are for Clothes" would have been typical of the early years of street activism, where acceptance of LGBTQ life, out in the open, was something rarely seen up until then.

Extensive interview with a veteran assistant director (who actually started out as a cameraman) whose career stretched over six decades, from 1918 to 1970. During the studio era he worked largely at Paramount and then 20th Century-Fox; among the many directors for whom he worked were Frank Borzage, William Wellman, Dorothy Arzner, John Cromwell, Josef von Sternberg, Wesley Ruggles, George Seaton, and Henry Hathaway. 256 x 202 mm. Photograph by David Powers with his small San Francisco studio handstamp to upper right corner of verso. The image depicts Adler at the podium, conducting, with the orchestra in the foreground and the audience in the background. Inscribed in black ink: "To Marilyn Horne, with warm thanks for the great Park Concert on 13 September 1981. Most Cordially Kurt Adler." From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne (b. 1934). Austrian conductor Kurt Adler came to Chicago in 1938 before joining the San Francisco Opera, a post he held from 1943 until 1981. Adler began offering free concerts at Golden Gate Park in 1973 to open the new season, and the tradition continues to this day. The concert in 1981, featuring Marilyn Horne, was one of his last appearances on the podium. "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range, rich and tangy in timbre, with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top... In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene, proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist, singing lieder, mélodies, Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.

New York: Touchstone / Simon & Schuster, 1990. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 6x0x9. Reprint. Minor wear to corners, pages toned. 1990 Trade Paperback. 635 pp. Black-and-white photographs. A condensed version of Ambrose's two-volume biography of the general who became the 34th President of the United States. "Stephen E. Ambrose draws upon extensive sources, an unprecedented degree of scholarship, and numerous interviews with Eisenhower himself to offer the fullest, richest, most objective rendering yet of the soldier who became president. He gives us a masterly account of the European war theater and Eisenhower's magnificent leadership as Allied Supreme Commander. Ambrose's recounting of Eisenhower's presidency, the first of the Cold War, brings to life a man and a country struggling with issues as diverse as civil rights, atomic weapons, communism, and a new global role. Along the way, Ambrose follows the 34th President's relations with the people closest to him, most of all Mamie, his son John, and Kay Summersby, as well as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Harry Truman, Nixon, Dulles, Khrushchev, Joe McCarthy, and indeed, all the American and world leaders of his time. This superb interpretation of Eisenhower's life confirms Stephen Ambrose's position as one of our finest historians.
