Description
02/12/1814. On August 8, 1814, talks began at Ghent, Belgium, that would ultimately result in a treaty ending the War of 1812. The head of the American negotiating team was John Quincy Adams, the U.S.’s most experienced diplomat. The four men who served with him were carefully selected by President Madison to reflect the varieties of political sentiment in the United States. Foremost among them was Henry Clay, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and a noted War Hawk. Albert Gallatin had served as Secretary of the Treasury for both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. James Bayard was a U.S. Senator belonging to the Federalist Party who had been an opponent of the war, and was one of the 13 Senators to vote against declaring it. However, once the war began he supported the war effort. Jonathan Russell was acting U.S. ambassador to Britain when war was declared. Sent to Ghent as a negotiator, he was also serving as ambassador to Sweden and Norway. He proved instrumental in achieving the final peace terms.William H. Crawford was U.S. ambassador to France during the negotiations, and was responsible for superintending the American consuls in Europe and keeping them informed of developments. More than that, he was an advisor to the President on the happenings on the Continent. As Ambassador to the Court of one of the two major adversaries in the conflicts in Europe, he was also actively involved in the Ghent negotiation process, advising the negotiators and responding to their confidential communiqués.  He would later serve as Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Madison and Monroe. At the start, the U.S. negotiators had their instructions: ""the impressment of seamen and illegal blockades were the principal cause of the war,"" which would ""cease as soon as these rights are respected."" British cruisers must not be allowed to stop and search U.S. vessels, which practice ""withholds the respect due our flag…It is expected that all American seamen who have been impressed will be discharged.” Another major object of the negotiations was to end the British blockades. “We also need to be assured that no further interference with our commerce"" will take place. Next the instructions took up the question of the British arming and supplying the Indians. The article in the Treaty of 1794 allowing ""British traders from Canada and the North to trade with the Indian Tribes in the U.S., must not be renewed."" Nor must Britain continue to use native forces against ""our Western States and Territories.” Thus, the U.S. negotiators must insist on an end to impressment, and ship seizures, and a stop to aiding the Indians in the American west.In late June, Secretary of State James Monroe had written Crawford, “If the war goes on, some skillful French officers…may be useful. This is merely a hint…”On October 14, pursuant to Monroe’s instructions, Crawford wrote to the Commissioners in code of a secret offer that had been made by the French, to the effect that experienced French troops would come to the US side to fight against the English in America.  “It is my duty to communicate to you certain propositions which have been made and which it is believed have been made with a sincere desire to fulfil them. It is also believed that engagements of the same kind may be offered to a considerable extent and that the demand for advances [of cash from the U.S.] may be greatly diminished...In the latter event I cannot see any objection which can be offered to it on our part. The difficulty of executing these engagements excludes the idea that they can be very extensive but the advantages which they offer even upon a contracted scale ought not to be overlooked.”  Faced with more stalling from the British, U.S. delegation sent George Boyd, a messenger and secretary, to meet with Crawford in Paris and give a short but optimistic response to the French offer.  John Quincy Adams describes this incident in some detail in his Memoirs.Meanwhile, the British were giving the American negotiators mixed signals, not really backing off of uti possidetis, but in the same note expressly stating that they had been instructed to conclude a peace on the principle of both parties restoring whatever territory they might have taken. The Americans absolutely insisted on an acceptance of status antebellum; and although the British were not giving in on that point yet, they were clearly edging towards it.Towards the end of October the American delegation updated Crawford on the negotiations with the British, and their attitude on French involvement.  In a letter of October 25, they wrote,  “…The tenor of the last communication received from [the British Commissioners] confirms us in the opinion which we then gave you, with regard to the proposal on which you had consulted us.”  In other words, pursue the option. As November changed to December however, the tone of the negotiations changed.  On December 2, Jonathan Russell wrote, “there can be little doubt that we shall now have peace.”With this in mind, the negotiators sought to halt, at least for the moment, any effort to bring in French officers and troops.Autograph letter signed, in Adams’s hand and signed by all the commissioners, December 2, 1814. “We duly received your favor of the 22nd ult by Mr. Shaler, who now returns to Paris with the dispatches from the Department of State for you, which have been received by us. Most of them were brought by the Ajax, which arrived on the 21st ult at the Texel from Boston.  “Under the present circumstances of the negotiation at this place we think it expedient to revoke the opinion which we had given you in our letters by Mr. Boyd and Mr. Shaler on the subject concerning which you had consulted us.  It may be advisable to suspend for the present all further proceedings of the kind which we had recommended.”This is a remarkable document, signed by all the Ghent negotiators, in the hand of John Quincy Adams, seeking to draw France further into the conflict on the side of the Americans.  It was acquired directly from the Crawford descendants and has not been offered for sale before.

In a later very fine green morocco-backed clamshell box by Zaehnsdorf. With frontispiece portrait engraved aby John Beugo after a portrait painted for this edition by Alexander Nasmyth, with tissue guard. Verso of front free endpaper with morocco bookplate of Paul Edward Chevalier. Gibson, p. 5; Rothschild 556. ◆Text lightly washed and pressed (in keeping with the bibliophilic fashion at the time of binding), but the leaves still fresh as well as remarkably clean; A FINE COPY IN A GLITTERING BINDING WITH NO SIGNS OF WEAR. This is an exquisitely bound copy of the second printing (after the extremely rare Kilmarnock first edition of 1786) of one of the most famous poetic publications in history. Burns issued the poems at the age of 27 in order to raise passage money for a voyage to Jamaica, where he had been offered an agricultural post on a plantation. At a time when his contemporaries were searching for the "natural bard" and, in the process, had unearthed poetical threshers, poetical milk maidens, poetical cobblers, and more, the charming plowman Burns delivered his simple and beautiful lyrics with most propitious timing. He found himself famous almost at once, and his fame has not faltered over time, even though, after the appearance of the present work, he did little during the rest of his life except write songs and drink. The so-called "Cosway" binding, featuring handsome morocco inset with one or more painted miniatures, apparently originated with the London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran about 1909. It was in that year that G. C. Williamson's book entitled "Richard Cosway" (dealing with the British miniature painter of that name, 1742-1821) was remaindered by Sotheran and presumably given this special decorative treatment to encourage sales. The name "Cosway" was then used to describe any book so treated, whoever its author. Although the artist of our miniature is unidentified, the work here is remarkably well done and clearly inspired by the engraved portrait of Burns in the book. The quality of the painting suggests that it could possibly have been done by Caroline Billin Currie, best known for her role in producing Cosway bindings of the sort seen here. Collaborating mostly with Riviere, she produced about 1,000 such bindings by the time she died in 1940. The present example is the work of Riviere's great rival. Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe trained with Douglas Cockerell before founding their own bindery in 1901. They continued in a successful partnership until 1912, when Francis drowned. Despite this loss, the firm grew and prospered, employing a staff of 80 by the mid-1920s and becoming perhaps the most successful English bindery of the 20th century. Though our binding dates from the first quarter of the 20th century, its extraordinarily fine condition could easily lead one to believe that it is brand new. It should be no surprise that this beautiful volume has an illustrious provenance: it comes from the collection of 20th century English bindings put together by Paul Chevalier, whose library of beautiful volumes was uniformly characterized by outstanding workmanship and superb condition. The sale of his books at Christie's in 1990 represented one of the best collections of British bindings brought to auction in the past half century (this was lot #81, which sold for $3,300 all in)..

London: Chatto & Windus, 1899. A New Edition. 187 x 120 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). ix, [1] (blank), 338, [2] pp. VERY PRETTY DARK BROWN MOROCCO, GILT IN AN ARTS & CRAFTS DESIGN, FOR BUMPUS (stamp-signed on front turn-in) BY RIVIERE & SON, front cover with frame of graceful long-stemmed tulips enclosing a field with 11 rows of five gilt dots, raised bands accented with five gilt dots, spine panels with spray of three tulips, anular dots between the blooms, gilt titling, turn-ins framed by multiple gilt rules, corners with three tulips and double rows of dots, all edges gilt, with delicate scalloped gauffering. In a later brown cloth slipcase. Front pastedown with bookplate of Gwendolen Bourke engraved by C. W. Sherborn. Spine evenly sunned to hazel brown, one corner lightly bumped, occasional minor foxing, but A FINE COPY, clean, fresh, and bright, in a gleaming binding with few signs of wear. Handsomely bound in the innovative Art & Crafts style for Oxford Street booksellers John and Edward Bumpus, this is a new printing of the Swinburne poems first issued in 1866 and described by DNB as "a dazzling collection . . . learned and cosmopolitan in outlook . . . [that] established Swinburne as not only the leading new poet of the day but an international icon for progressive thinkers." DNB notes that Victorian society was shocked by poems that "espoused republicanism, fulminated against priests and kings, rejected the theology and consolations of Christianity, and celebrated decadent romantic and sexual feelings," but the works found a more enthusiastic audience among fans of the Aesthetic Movement in the late 19th century. Swinburne (1837-1909) was considered a leading light of that school, along with Oscar Wilde and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Our former owner, Gwendolen Bourke (1870-1967), had direct links with this group: together with her husband Algernon, she was immortalized--if gently caricatured--in Wilde's greatest play, "The Importance of Being Earnest." Founded in 1838, the Bumpus firm long enjoyed a reputation as purveyors of fine and beautiful bindings without ever operating a bindery. Instead, they outsourced the work to the best binders of the day, including Morrell, Sangorski & Sutcliffe, and Riviere & Son. Based on the design and the tools employed, our binding can be attributed to Riviere. The frame of undulating tulips is modern and fresh, quite unlike traditional English bindings..

Description
[Columbus, Ohio]: [Richard Nevins], 1861. First edition. Bifolium slip bill printing measuring 330 x195mm and complete in 3 pages. Lower blank portion of conjugate leaf trimmed; some splitting along fold lines. Early pencil annotations throughout. Slip bills such as this, with widely spaced, numbered lines, were designed for in-session discussion, debate and annotation; and they were printed exclusively for the use of delegates. Therefore few survive. Unrecorded in OCLC with no other known copies noted, the present is perhaps the only extant recording of the proposals that would be refined into the final version of the law later that year. Ten years earlier, during the height of her work for abolition, Jane Elizabeth Jones spoke before the Ohio Women's Convention in Salem to connect that movement with the fight for women's rights: "We should demand our recognition as equal members of the human family...as human beings; and when this point is established, the term 'woman's rights' will become obsolete" (Ohio History). Highlighting Black Americans' and women's humanity was crucial to her work. And in 1861, alongside reformers Frances Gage and Hannah Cutler, she would continue to push this message even further. Speaking to the Ohio legislature regarding women's property rights, she called upon Senators "to imagine themselves with the legal rights of women" -- to confront the terrible realities of being a human "whose property and wages became their husbands' at marriage," as did even their own bodies (Broad Movements). An electrifying orator, Jones managed to get a sufficient number of men to support the cause during that session. The result was the present bill. While differences exist between the text of this slip bill and the final legislation, the impact was massive for the women of Ohio. And it was a bellwether for women across the US who were clamouring for equality. In its final state, the "1861 law declared that any real estate that a woman had acquired before or during the marriage was her separate property and under her sole control. She could collect the rents and profits. She could contract to manage her real estate...The 1861 law also declared that a woman's personal property including wages acquired before and during marriage was now her separate property and under her sole control, regardless of divorce" (Little). While it would take another 26 years for women to achieve full property rights, with the passage of the Married Women's Property Act in 1887, the present efforts constituted a victory -- at least for white women. For Black and Indigenous women, the laws did not significantly budge and they found fewer white allies than would be hoped given the movement's basis in "common humanity." An important piece of U.S., Midwestern, and Ohio legal and gender history, further comparative research could be done between the terms of the bill as drafted and its final iteration, as well as to the extent it offered a model for continued efforts within the women's rights movement's varied organizations.

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1884. First edition. Near Fine. Original green publisher's cloth binding stamped in gilt on the spine and black and gilt on the front board. Floral endpapers. A Near Fine copy with a bit of faint spotting to the boards and lower corners gently bumped. Contemporary gift inscriptions to the front endpaper and occasional marginal foxing, else internally unmarked. Complete with four pages of publisher's ads in the rear. In all, a square, pleasing copy of an important work usually found in worn condition. Following a series of devastating personal losses, Helen Hunt Jackson turned to writing both fiction and non-fiction as a means of supporting herself. Throughout her career, her works had a decidedly progressive bent. "By the 1880s, when Jackson first visited Southern California, she was an unabashed activist as well as a belletrist. Ramona offers an almost unmitigated denunciation of U.S. imperialism in California, presenting the region in a dystopian light, as a paradise gone bad" (Phillips). The work for which she is now best remembered, Ramona narrates the tragedy of a half-Indigenous and half-Scottish woman and her Indigenous lover Alessandro. The prejudices of those around them force the couple "to wander through Southern California as through a nightmare world, isolated, dispossessed of their rightful connection to the land, and longing to be consoled for the ruin of their dreams. Jackson created the first figures in a long line of disappointed, deracinated heroes who populate the later Southern California fiction of writers as diverse as Nathanael West, Evelyn Waugh, Thomas Pynchon, and Joan Didion" (Phillips). Washington City: Printed for the Author, by S. C. Ustick, 1827. 48pp in contemporary plain wrappers. Stitching absent, unbound. Faint rubberstamp on title page, gum label at lower spine. Good plus. This is the first part of what became a three-part book. Each is a separate imprint. Parts II and III were printed in 1828 and 1832. Part II, like the first Part, was printed by Ustick in Washington. Part III was printed in Frederick Maryland by Neilson Poe. "The conversion of the Barber family, despite the prejudices of a Puritan education and environment, was one of the most notable and far-reaching in its results of any recorded in the early annals of the Church in New England. Daniel Barber has left a 'History of My Own Times' (Washington, 1827), in which he states that his father and mother were Congregational Dissenters of strict Puritanic rule and he continued in that sect until his twenty-seventh year, when he joined the Episcopalians. Previous to this he had served two terms as a soldier in the Continental army" ["Barber Family" by Thomas Francis Meehan, Catholic Encyclopedia website, accessed May 01, 2026.] "Daniel Barber came from good Puritan stock and was a fine upstanding Congregationalist minister. Until some Episcopalians convinced him that Apostolic Succession matters when it comes to ministerial Orders. So he became an Episcopalian priest. He was a fine, upstanding Episcopalian priest for many years. He and his wife, Chloe, raised three children as good Episcopalians. But eventually the question of Apostolic Succession came back to him, and he realized that Episcopalianism didn't satisfy the question of Apostolic Succession - the Catholics actually had it, and the Episcopalians didn't. Meantime, his son Virgil had also become a fine, upstanding Episcopalian priest. He and his wife, Jerusha, were in charge of a good school and had a comfortable life with their children. But a chance encounter with a pamphlet on the life of St. Francis Xavier fired his heart to seek the faith that motivated a man like St. Francis to do what he'd done. Eventually, Virgil and Jerusha became Catholic. Then Chloe converted, along with a number of other members of the family. And finally, Daniel also became Catholic. The entire affair was very upsetting to fine, upstanding New England Protestant sensibilities, and caused a sensation" ["Barber Family" by Thomas Francis Meehan, Catholic Encyclopedia website, accessed May 01, 2026.] FIRST EDITION. Description
Cooperstown, NY, 1972 First edition. Signed by Lefty Gomez in black ink to front wrapper. Folded cream-colored scorecard, lettered in red and blue. Unscored with fold not perfectly lined up, else fine. On August 7th, 1972, the 30th annual Baseball Hall of Fame Game took place, with the Yankees defeating the Dodgers 8-3. That same day, Lefty Gomez was formally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Vernon "Lefty" Gomez (1908-1989) was born in Rodeo, California, the youngest of eight children, to Francisco and Rita Gomez. When Gomez was 20 years old, he signed a contract to play for the San Francisco Seals, and two years later he joined the New York Yankees. Except for a single game in 1943 with the Washington Senators, Gomez spent his entire career with the Yankees (1930-1942). He was a key part of the team's dominant run in the 1930s, which saw them winning five World Series titles. In World Series games, Gomez was undefeated on the mound, boasting a 6-0 record, which still stands today as the longest undefeated winning streak for a pitcher in the World Series. In his relatively short but illustrious career, Gomez was selected for seven All-Star games and won the Triple Crown twice (1934 and 1937). He was the starting pitcher for the American League in the first ever All-Star game on July 6, 1933, and even drove in the first run.. First Edition. Original Wraps. Near Fine.

London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies, in the Strand. / J.M'Creery, Printer, 1815. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. First edition. Front joint of first volume neatly repaired by previous owner, spines toned and a bit dried, owner bookplate of Sir Robert Johnson Eden on front endpaper of first volume, a few pages lightly foxed, minimal marginalia on just a couple pages. 1815 Full-Leather. iv, 549, [3]; 583, [5] pp. 8vo. Full calf, black morocco spine labels, gilt titles and rules, marbled edges and endpapers. Wraxall references intent for a third volume in the preface, but this would not be published until 1818. "After receiving some sort of education in Bristol, he was sent to Bombay in 1769 with the East India Company, and was appointed judge-advocate and paymaster of the forces in the Gujarat expedition, and that against Baroche in 1771. For reasons that remain unclear, he abandoned this career in 1772 and returned to England, and seems to have decided to become a professional travel writer. During 1774 - 5 he travelled extensively in Europe, especially Portugal and Scandinavia, moving (at what must have been some considerable expense) in diplomatic and royal circles, garnering numerous anecdotes which later found their way into his published travelogues and the Historical Memoirs (published in 1815). During 1774 he became involved with those of the Danish nobility who were campaigning for the return from exile in Germany of Queen Caroline Matilda, sister of George III. Wraxall had an interview with Caroline Matilda in her Hanoverian retreat at Celle in September 1774 and became devoted to her cause, carrying messages between her and George III. He gave some £500 of his own money towards reinstating her on the Danish throne; unfortunately, Caroline Matilda died on 11 May 1775. Thereafter Wraxall wrote several times to George III, asking to be reimbursed: these requests remained unanswered for five years, until Wraxall became an MP in 1780, at which point he received 1000 guineas from Lord North, no doubt to ensure his loyalty in the House of Commons. In 1775 Wraxall published Cursory Remarks Made in a Tour through some of the Northern Parts of Europe, dedicated to Viscount Clare in gratitude for his patronage. Wraxall's travelogue is elegantly written, and its Scandinavian and Russian itinerary was novel and therefore of great interest to the reading public (it rapidly went through four editions); although the Gentleman's Magazine (1st ser., January 1776, 24) wished that he could 'be prevailed on to strike out all mention of every woman that he would have us believe reigned the sovereign of his affections for an hour'. The narrative is self-consciously chivalric and testifies to Wraxall's lifelong interest in tales of intrigue and distress, although Queen Caroline Matilda's predicament does not figure in the text, presumably in the interests of diplomacy. He presents himself as a citizen of the world, observing that 'I have always found the great and good to be of no country' (Wraxall, Cursory Remarks, 32), and boasts that 'danger and fatigue have no terrors for me, when knowledge is the reward of my endeavors' (ibid., 268). Samuel Johnson wrote to Hester Thrale (22 May 1775) that 'Wraxal is too fond of words, but you may read him' (Letters of Samuel Johnson, 2.209 - 10). Wraxall continued to travel around Europe during the late 1770s, visiting Germany and Italy in 1778 - 9. In 1780 he returned to England and became member of parliament for Hindon (Wiltshire), through the influence of Lord George Germain, a lifelong ally... The first part of the narrative is a collection of anecdotes gathered during his European travels, including some grisly tales of aristocratic murder allegedly told to Wraxall by Lady Hamilton; but it was the second and more substantial section which generated public interest and critical outrage. Here Wraxall describes in fascinating, often scurrilous detail the political world and the London social scene, commenting on everything from hairstyles and costume to the conduct of the American war. He was a supporter until 1783 of Lord North; but he relates how Fox's India Bill of that year prompted him to abandon the coalition party (even though North had promised him a seat at the board of greencloth) and throw his weight behind Pitt, to whom he remained generally loyal, and who arranged for his
