He was an English historical novelist born in Manchester. Popular in his lifetime, his novels sold in large numbers. he is described by S.M. Ellis as one of the most picturesque personalities of the nineteenth century. Prefaced to the first volume is Ainsworth's long account of the testimonial banquet given to him at Manchester Town Hall in September 1881, which is described by Wolff as useful for any account of his life and work. This last novel not in SADLEIR. Slight rubbing to extremities, raised bands, spine panels decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers.
