Description
1819. DANTE (CARY, Henry Francis, translator). The Vision; or Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, of Dante Alighieri. London: Taylor and Hessey, 1819. Three volumes. Octavo, early 20th-century three-quarter brown morocco gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. $4200.Second edition of Cary's renowned translation of Dante's Divine Comedy—the first in this larger octavo format—handsomely bound.Henry Francis Cary's translation was first published in 1814 in a smaller 16mo format. However, ""a new edition was published in 1819, and ever since… it has remained the translation which, on Dante's name being mentioned, occurs first to the mind,"" as Cary has ""in great measure preserved his transparent simplicity and intense vividness"" (DNB). ""The Divine Comedy of Dante could have been written at no other time than at the beginning of the 14th century. It was essentially an age of freedom and daring in thought and speech, which it was natural to express in verse. To this Dante added a deep knowledge of the learning of his time… The audacity of his theme, the success of its treatment, the beauty and majesty of his verse, have ensured that his poem never lost its reputation"" (PMM 8). Lowndes, 590. Slight scattered foxing; minimal rubbing to corners and lower edges. A handsome copy.

Description
Dorpat: J C Schumann Witwe, 1846. First Edition.. Original printed wrappers.. Very good with a residual glue stain and portion of mount along spine where it was once bound with other items; feint marginal tide mark on edge.. 4to, [2], [3] - 47 pp. Madler had an appointment at the observatory at Dorpat where he carried out his observations. He is best known for particpation in the authorship and publication of the lunar map. The work offered here is his primary effort in celestial dynamics and cosmology. Although his theory was ultimately shown to be incorrect his approach and methodology is considered to be of value (see his entry in NDB). He proffered the idea that the Pleiades may be regarded as the central group of stars composing the system of the Milky Way and that the bright star Alcyone was the central body about which they were all moving. This idea was later proven to be incorrect. An early and fascinating theory based on observational astronomy. The book was quickly reprinted (in a smaller format) in 1847 to meet the demand. See DSB entry and note on this title; NDB XV.

Description
Cambridge: Hilliard and Brown; Hilliard, Gray and Co., 1834. FIRST EDITIONS. With 114 beautiful woodcut text illustrations. Original publisher’s cloth decorated in blind, spine labels, head and foot of spine of both volumes torn or small piece missing; some light browning (heavier to preliminaries and endleaves) and scattered foxing. From the library of Prof. Paul Farber with his signature on the first blank of one volume. First edition of "one of the earliest landmarks in the history of American ornithology." Written by one of the leading naturalists of the time, this work covers hundreds of land and water birds found on the North American continent, providing detailed descriptions of physical aspects, as well as of nesting and feeding habits. Based partially upon Nuttall's own observations and partly on the writings of Audubon, Wilson and others, Nuttall wrote the manual after having traveled extensively through North America. Nuttall (1786-1859), a distinguished botanist and zoologist, later became curator of the botanical gardens at Harvard University. While traveling the route taken by Lewis and Clark, accompanied by the English Botanist John Bradbury, he discovered several previously unknown plants, afterwards writing his North American Sylva, the first book to include all of the trees of North America. Several bird species have been named after Nuttall, including the Piccoides nuttalii, by his friend William Gambel, and the Pica nuttalli and Phalaenoptilus nuttalli by James Audubon.

New. $49.95 * Smith traces the history of Hebrew law from its beginning the Decalogue to its close in the Priestly Code, considers its relation to contemporary social history and compares it to the Hittite, Assyrian and Babylonian codes. The extensive appendices contains complete translations of the Code of Hammurabi and the Assyrian and Hittite codes. Recommended by Roscoe Pound in the Outlines of Lectures on Jurisprudence (5th. ed.) 233. "Professor Smith traces the history of the Hebrew law as it is found in the Pentateuch. He repudiates the Mosaic origin of the contents of the Old Testament with the exception of the primitive Decalogue, the authorship of which he does ascribe to Moses. He discusses the Covenant Code, the Deuteronomic Code, Ezekiel's Code, the Holiness Code, and the Priestly Code; and he presents a new translation of the Code of Hammurabi, the Assyrian Code and the Hittite Code, thus bringing together in one body the records of the legislation of all the great peoples of Western Asia. A vivid background is thus afforded for the study of Hebrew law." --Louis E. Levinthal, 7 Temple Law Quarterly 126 1932-1933 JOHN MERLIN POWIS SMITH [1866-1932] was a professor of Old Testament language and literature at the University of Chicago. In The Bible: An American Translation (1935), the Old Testament was translated by a group of scholars under his editorship. He was the author of The Moral Life of the Hebrews (1923) and other works.

A very presentable signed first edition of this exuberant novel from Kevin Wilson. ABOUT THIS BOOK: An exuberant, bighearted novel about two teenage misfits who spectacularly collide one fateful summer, and the art they make that changes their lives forever Sixteen-year-old Frankie Budge-aspiring writer, indifferent student, offbeat loner-is determined to make it through yet another summer in Coalfield, Tennessee, when she meets Zeke, a talented artist who has just moved into his grandmother's house and who is as awkward as Frankie is. Romantic and creative sparks begin to fly, and when the two jointly make an unsigned poster, shot through with an enigmatic phrase, it becomes unforgettable to anyone who sees it. The edge is a shantytown filled with gold seekers. We are fugitives, and the law is skinny with hunger for us. The posters begin appearing everywhere, and people wonder who is behind them and start to panic. Satanists, kidnappers-the rumors won't stop, and soon the mystery has dangerous repercussions that spread far beyond the town. Twenty years later, Frances Eleanor Budge gets a call that threatens to upend her carefully built life: a journalist named Mazzy Brower is writing a story about the Coalfield Panic of 1996. Might Frances know something about that? A bold coming-of-age story, written with Kevin Wilson's trademark wit and blazing prose, Now Is Not the Time to Panic is a nuanced exploration of young love, identity, and the power of art. It's also about the secrets that haunt us-and, ultimately, what the truth will set free.(Publisher).
