Description
1848. ["The Little Match Girl"] Translated by Charles Boner. With Four Illustrations drawn by Count Pocci, of Munich. London: Grant and Griffith, successors to J. Harris, 1848. 16 pp undated ads. Original blind-stamped olive-green horizontally-ribbed cloth, all page edges gilt. First Edition in the English language of this collection of seven fairy tales -- "Little Tuk," "The Shadow," "The Naughty Boy," "The Two Neighbouring Families," "The Darning Needle," "The Old Street-Lamp" and "The Little Match-Girl" -- all appearing in English for the first time except "The Naughty Boy." The translator Charles Boner wrote the dedication to Andersen himself, and also contributed a 15-page introduction "To the Young Readers of These Tales" (he says "Here is another Volume of Andersen's charming stories..." because he also had translated another group of Andersen tales published in 1846). Included are four tinted lithograph plates by Franz Graf von Pocci. This copy is still in the original olive cloth, with page edges gilt and with the original pale-yellow endpapers. It is in very good-plus condition (a small inkstain on the front cover but otherwise just a trace of external wear; a bit of cracking of the very fragile endpapers). The front paste-down bears the small label of the Paris booksellers Boyveau & Chevillet, from probably about fifty years after this book was published.

Description
Kelly Air Force Base, Texas: Base Photographic Laboratory, 1955. Very good +. Six black and white 8" x 10" photographs. Generally very good plus: a bit curled with light edge wear and scattered spotting. This is a group of fantastic photographs showing internal views of the general store at the Kelly Air Force Base (KAFB) near San Antonio, Texas. The site for KAFB was chosen in 1916 and the base opened one year later, its quick growth spurred by the United States entry into World War I. The base was known for the "Kelly Katies," the name given to the over 10,000 women who worked there and helped make it the world's largest air depot by the end of World War II. At KAFB's closing in 2001, it was the oldest continuously operating flying base in the United States Air Force. These photographs reveal internal shots of KAFB's general store. There are great images of the grocery aisles, teeming with canned and fresh fruits and vegetables, shelves of dry goods, price lists for sodas and baby foods, and cartons of cigarettes at the registers. Close inspection reveals dozens of products and their mid-1950s labels. One image shows a back wall rack piled with bags of sugar, with boxes of Black Flag Insect Bomb stacked nearby. A spectacular group of photographs showing an important Air Force Base's grocery store in the 1950s. We found no apparent holdings in OCLC or online.
