Description
(Goole, East Yorkshire): The Chevington Press, 2006. First edition. Fine in original clamshell.. Striking limited edition artist's book that contrasts the violent world of prize fighting with the measured, clean format of a fine press book. Pulling from scanty historical sources about the identities of prize fighters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, D. R. Wakefield presents brief biographical vignettes of 14 Jewish prize fighters during a 55-year period. Through the personal stories of the fighters, Wakefield also throws some light on the culture of prize fighting in the period; and through their heavy, deeply-embossed portraits, he almost simulates the impact of a blow. An enthralling production. 15'' x 10.5''. Original red quarter-goatskin binding with paste paper boards, paper title label to front board and gilt spine lettering. Etched frontispiece with 14 etched portraits and a number of smaller etchings throughout. [22] leaves. Signed by Wakefield to colophon, numbered 14 of 55. In original grey cloth clamshell box, with red spine label. Lower edge of spine label with a touch of rubbing. Clean and tight.

1956. Northampton, Mass.: Gehenna Press, 1956. Small 4to, [11 inc. the first blank]pp. 18 b/w plates printed on Japan vellum with a title-sheet printed in red on plain paper preceding each image. Stapled into wrappers, very good. § "Fifty copies of this book have been printed by Esther and Leonard Baskin at the Gehenna Press in Northampton Mass." This is copy number "X" which indicates a proof copy since the edition was issued in a quarter morocco binding and this copy is unbound. Six copies are recorded on WorldCat to which add Toronto (Fisher Library) and Essick (CA). Leonard Baskin's note, from the Bibliography: "This was the last book which was made with my hands, that cessation a benefaction since I was a compositor & pressman of no distinction. This book is an homage to Blake & the dear youths who plied him with honour in his late age. My increased skill in woodengraving is here made manifest & a pattern for a kind of Gehenna Press book makes its beginning here; an introduction succeeded by a series of prints. The title-page reveals the novice's poking into historical sources & exemplars.".

Description
San Francisco: The Book Club of California [printed at the press of Robert Grabhorn and Andrew Hoyem], 1972. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. One of 450 copies, folio size, [156] pp., with prospectus and original sales receipt. The curious misconception that California was an island was recorded by a minimum of 170 maps, in many editions, and continued to 1785 even after the island theory had been disproved. Dr. John Leighly, Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of California Berkeley, was enlisted by The Book Club to write an essay on the history of California as an island, the cartography of the West Coast of America, and early exploration and navigation of the Pacific Coast. Dr. Leighly's essay is illustrated with reproductions of maps that trace the progression of California from peninsula to island and back again. A thorough bibliographical checklist and historical account unlike any done before, still highly regarded and the seminal research work in this field. The Book Club of California's 141st publication, and its Christmas book for 1972. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter brown morocco, tan paper boards with a colour facsimile of one of the maps on the front board, lettering in gilt to backstrip, fore- and tail-edges uncut, map on title page in colour, opening initial in blue, green and yellow, colophon in red and black, twenty-five map plates (twenty double spreads and one fold-out), twelve facsimile map reproductions throughout text; Goudy California type both hand-set and monotype, handmade paper for text, machine made paper for plates, binding folio size (14" by 9"), [1-7] 8-154 [1 colophon] pp., limited first edition, one of 450 copies. Loosely laid in are: (i) the prospectus, and single sheet folded once to four pages (13 1/4" by 9" when open) and (ii) the original sales invoice on BCC letterhead, showing the price of $55.00, dated February 23, 1973. ___CONDITION: Fine overall, the boards clean and without wear, the leather spine smooth and supple, internally bright and clean, text block is tight with solid hinges; and entirely free of prior owner markings; backstrip with a hint of rubbing at head and tail, light offsetting to both hinges; otherwise a beautiful copy. The prospecuts also fine, clean and without wear, the only fold the original mailing fold; the sales receipt also near fine, also with only the original mailing fold. ___CITATIONS: BCC 200, no. 141; Harlan, Grabhorn-Hoyem Bibliography, no. 60. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy volume, therefore additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. First Edition, in the usual primary state (chocolate-brown cloth, with the error on the Contents page); Knopf's American edition, published two weeks later, did not include "The Princess."
