Cleveland, OH: Brooks and Co. (Alfred Williams & Co., Raleigh, N.C. mentioned only on the front wrapper), 1883. Second edition (issued by a different publisher in the same year as the first, without the ads for western North Carolina businesses), so stated at the head of the front wrapper. 8vo. 374 pp. Illustrated from wood engravings (some of the illustrations by William A. Walker), plates, folding map (short tear repaired on verso). Clark "New South" 506 (for the first edition): "Extensive account of a hunting and sight-seeing journey into the western North Carolina mountains ... the authors had a good sense of geography and took pains to describe the countryside." Phillips "Bibliography of American Sporting Books," p. 418 (for the first edition): "Adventures in hunting and fishing; bears, deer, a cougar." Thornton 15513 (for the first edition). Weeks, p. 23 (for the first edition). This edition not mentioned in any of the bibliographies consulted. The rear wrapper prints press notices for the book from 15 newspapers and periodicals; the verso of the front wrapper prints an ad for the Swannanoa Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. Very good. Original illustrated wrappers (chipped around the edges, front joint repaired with a cloth tape, spine partly eroded). (#6052).
