Description
MÉRET OPPENHEIM sketched an imaginary character under which she wrote a letter about a forthcoming photography exhibition. Autograph Letter SIGNED, 4to, n.p., May 2,1967. She writes that she sent "19 photographs," and adds in a post script in pencil that she will send her Stockholm catalog. Signed "Meret O." In 1967, the year she wrote our letter, Oppenheim was given a major retrospective in Stockholm. Her comment on the "Stockholm catalog" may be a reference to that exhibit. During the following decade she attracted renewed interest with the growing attention to women artists. Currently, Oppenheim is the focus of a new exhibition, "Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition," which showcases about 200 art pieces at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Oct. 2022 to March 2023. MOMA's first purchase of art crafted by a woman was Oppenheim's Surrealist sculpture, "Object in Fur," in 1936. She withdrew from the art word returning later in photography as she mentions here. She developed a unique style apart from a particular movement although she is still recognized as one of the few female Surrealists. Her letters, particularly with drawings, are rare. The drawing with note measures 8.25 x 11.6 and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Frame measures 19 1/8 x 16. Condition: this drawing is rendered on thin paper onto which another piece of paper is attached at the back along top edge. The overall condition is very good, sunning along the right and left margins, two small light age stains near the right edge, center fold visible.

Description
Frankfurt am Main; Basel: I.G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft; Durand & Huguenin A.G., 1930. First edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Quarto. 79pp. Original black cloth with white-stamped lettering on front cover and spine. This scarce catalogue published by I.G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft, the world’s largest chemical cartel, from its founding in Germany in 1925 until its dissolution by the Allies after World War II*, presents an overview of the principal applications of the Indigosol dyes used in textile printing (Zeugdruckerei, Stoffdruckerei). Divided into four sections (A. Baumwolldruck. B. Kunstseidendruck. C. Seidendruck. D. Wolldruck), this volume contains 125 mounted textile samples in rich vibrant colors. The samples have different patterns and designs, with various sizes measuring from 4 1/2" x 6 1/4" to 3/4" x 1 1/4". Out of the original 126 mounted textile samples, only one is lacking (page 39). Moderate rubbing on corners. Minor staining along fore-edge of the first three leaves (not affecting text or samples). Age toning to outer edges of interior pages. Text in German. Binding in overall good, interior in good to good+, samples in very good condition. * During World War II, IG Farben established a synthetic oil and rubber plant at Auschwitz in order to take advantage of slave labor; the company also conducted drug experiments on live inmates. After the war several company officials were convicted of war crimes (9 being found guilty of plunder and spoliation of property in occupied territory and 4 being found guilty of imposing slave labor and inhumane treatment on civilians and prisoners of war). In 1945 IG Farben came under Allied authority; its industries (along with those of other German firms) were to be dismantled or dismembered with the stated intent “to render impossible any future threat to Germany’s neighbors or to world peace.” In the western zones of Germany, however, especially as the Cold War advanced, this disposition toward liquidation lessened. Eventually the Western powers and West Germans agreed to divide IG Farben into just three independent units: Hoechst, Bayer, and BASF (the first two being refounded in 1951; BASF in 1952).

FRANCIS GANO BENEDICT (1870 - 1957) was an American chemist, physiologist, and nutritionist who developed a calorimeter and a spirometer used to determine oxygen consumption and measure metabolic rate. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Benedict attended Harvard University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1893 and his master's degree in 1894. He earned his Ph.D., magna cum laude, at Heidelberg University in 1895.The Influence of Inanition on Metabolism (1907) is a report of subjects studied during short fasting periods in the chemical laboratory of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut. William Welch and John Shaw Billings were impressed with Benedict's early publications on animal heat and metabolism, and they conviced the Carnegie Foundation trustees to establish a nutrition laboratory under Benedict's direction. The result was the Boston Nutrition Laboratory, where Benedict remained until his retirement (1907-1937)." (DSB 1.610/1). His early and influential association with the Carnegie Institution of Washington enabled him to furnish his laboratory with expensive precise equipment, and to publish lengthy monographs. In A Study of Prolonged Fasting (1915), the Boston Nutrition Laboratory was employed to extend the observations of the previous report. The subject of study was to be a presumably healthy volunteer from Malta, Mr. A. Levanzin, who subected himself to a 31-day fast. Included in the report are his autobiographical notes. Meticulous data were collected, including vital signs, respiratory mechanics, calorimetry, psychologic testing, and blood, urine and fecal analyses. News of these studies reached the public, prompting Benedict to publish a brief notice in Science, May 31, 1912, in which he stated, "Newspapers and magazines, actuated only by the sensational element, have used every means to secure advance statements, and in some instances have issued "faked" statements, regardmg this experiment. The results will be presented only in the publications of the Carnegie Institution of Washington or in the regularly accredited scientific journals, and any prior statements purporting to be made by me or signed by the subject, A. levanzin, are to be disregarded." The third monograph, Human Vitality and Efficiency Under Prolonged Restricted Diet (1919) was prompted by global food deprivation during World War I. The subjects for study were male students from the International Young Men's Christian Association College in Springfield, Massachusetts. The published report was reviewed in JAMA, Nov 15, 1919: The Question of Low Protein Diets, "Benedict and his collaborators at the Carnegie Nutrition Laboratory in Boston conducted an elaborate investigation on human vitality and efficiency under prolonged restricted diet. result of the diminished food intake with a resulting decrease in body weight, amounting to more than 10 per cent., there was no pronounced decrease in physical endurance or capacity for work. The depression in the total metabolism was the most prominent feature in the research, particuIarly as it was accompanied by a depression in other rates. The changes were accompanied by a large loss of nitrogen from the body, amounting to 175 grams or more per person. Benedict argues that this loss is the most probable cause for the lowering of the plane of metabolism; for the withdrawal of a large amount of nitrogenous material from the fluids bathing the tissue cells is conceived by him to remove a potent stimulus to cellular activity.

Description
Moscow: Pravda, 1949. Softcover. First edition; 5 1/2 x 8 1/2; pp. 40; stapled printed wraps; minor wear to edges; near fine. “Vsesoiuznoe Obshchestvo po Rasprostraneniiu Politicheskikh i Nauchnykh Znanii†(The All-Union Society for the Dissemination of Political and Scientific Knowledge) replaced the ‘League of Militant Atheists’, or ‘The Union of the Godless’, in 1947. The League had been formed in 1925, by the Communist Party, as an atheistic and anti-religious organization of common workers and intelligentsia. In 1947 the Society commenced publishing journals and propaganda materials and it sponsored lectures, demonstrations and parades. Dedicated to eradicating religious beliefs and promoting science and knowledge, the public lectures were diligently recorded and printed (an example of which is the current one) in a pamphlet form with numerous illustrations. The topics covered scientific discoveries, Communist leaders’ works and speeches, history, notable names, anti-Imperialist propaganda, etc. In 1963 the organization was yet again renamed to ‘Znanie’ (Knowledge) and it is still in existence today. Subject: XVIII Congress of the Party; Stalin
