Description
London: Allen Lane, 1977. First Edition. 591 pages. 22 x 14.5 cm. This was Elizabeth David's own copy, heavily annotated, with more than fifteen pages of her handwritten notes laid in. The extensive notes written in David's hand were corrections used for the revised edition. It comes from the estate of her editor, Jill Norman, to whom the book is dedicated: "To Jill Norman, Affectionately" - David states in the Acknowledgements: "I have dedicated the book to her (Jill Norman) because she has nursed it along chapter by chapter and stage by stage, has supervised every aspect of its production, has certainly worked on it as hard and become almost as involved in its subject as I myself. Together we have visited mills and talked to millers, we have both tested many times all the bread flours and meals used for the recipes in this book; it has been a happy collaboration." David's English Bread and Yeast Cookery is both a technical guide and a historical study of British bread - becoming one of the foundational texts of the late-20th-century "real bread" movement in Britain. Many commentators treat English Bread and Yeast Cookery as David's "masterpiece" of English food, marking a turn from her earlier Mediterranean escapism to a rigorous engagement with native British traditions. She mines a wide range of historical sources to reconstruct techniques and products that are often poorly documented. The book's extended discussions of flours, grains, grinding, sifting, and leavening are also notable for debunking popular myths about bread and explaining the sensory and nutritional differences between industrial and traditional methods. For food historians, it remains a key secondary source and point of entry into the historic study of baking, particularly for topics like legal regulation, milling practices, and named regional or historical breads. The exhaustive notes and annotations in this copy show that David continued to revise a book that had already taken five years to write, carrying on her editing even after publication. David combs through every part of the book, correcting errors and adding revisions. While most of her notes are precise and historical, some are wryly entertaining, as when she reflects on Christmas: "Hugh Johnson once called the season of the Great Too Much. That means too much work as well as too much food and too much eating. Above all too much pressure. I only hope that nothing I have written here will add to anybody's work and anxiety at Christmas time. I hope indeed that something here and there will help to make the preparations easier, particularly for those who feel harried by advertising and the annual hysteria of the media into doing more than they can reasonably manage, and spending more than they can afford on things nobody really wants or needs." Also included are a few letters from readers querying specific recipes, along with correspondence correcting misattributed information. A pamphlet from a Cambridgeshire milling firm is laid in as well.

Very good.
Description
American [?], ca. 1850. Unique.. Very good.. An accomplished 19th century color gouache meas. 7.5 x 12 inches of a raging river waterfall. An ink notation on the verso of the backing board locates the scene as being : ' [obscured] Falls, New York ' . This is incorrect. The place is actually on the Rhine and the drawing depicts the Schaffhausen Falls. There is another (later) notation stating that the signature of A B Durand has been obliterated. The painting is not by Durand. It is executed on thick paper that had, at one time, been mounted to a backing board around its edges, wet, and shrunk to fit (a common method of preparation). The painting shows a high degree of skill in its execution. It is an evocative scene.

Description
1776. First Edition. JOHNSON, Samuel. Political Tracts. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1776. Octavo, late 19-century three-quarter polished black calf and marbled boards, brown gilt-stamped spine labels. $1500.First edition of Johnson's four anonymously published political tracts, together in one volume for the first time, False Alarm (1770), Falkland's Islands (1771), The Patriot (1774) and Taxation No Tyranny (1775), his provocative attack on American colonists and the First Continental Congress, handsomely bound.Johnson, famed for his Dictionary (1755), expressed his political and social attitudes ""in vigorous controversial fashion, to specific issues and events in the four political pamphlets he wrote in the 1770s."" This volume, which brings together those four works for the first time, is especially notable for containing his notorious ""anti-American pamphlet, Taxation No Tyranny"" (Wain, 280-85). Johnson had a ""pitiless and violent hatred of the American Revolution"" and Taxation, originally issued in a 1775 edition of 500 copies, was so incendiary that it helped sever the Anglo-American bond (Hitchens, Atlantic). In it he belittles the First Continental Congress, declaring its resolutions ""wild, indefinite and obscure… the madness of independence has spread."" He also targets colonists ""for their hatred of authority, their unseemly scramble for money, and especially their dependence on slaves… Likewise, many colonists saw in Johnson everything they disliked about the mother country—and yet they continued to read, and even admire, the work of this propagandist for King George III… Members of the founding generation relied on Johnson when they wrote their most important works—the Declaration, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Federalist Papers"" (Lynch, New York Times). Stahan and Cadell ""printed 750 copies"" (Adams 76-71a). Bound without rear advertisements. ESTC T130899. Courtney & Smith, 127. Sabin 36302. Goldsmith's I:11501. Text fresh with small bit of expert paper repair to corners of general title page, title page for False Alarm, gutter-edge of two rear leaves, none affecting text. A desirable near-fine copy.

Description
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1708. Hardcover. Very Good+. 2 volumes (152 x 95mm). Vol. I: 297pp., [7] table; Vol. II: 287pp., [4] index. Both volumes with the identical engraved frontispiece depicting the traditional theme of Aesop ruling the animals. The moralizing tales are extensively illustrated with copper- plate engravings by Georg Paul Busch. Volume I contains the life of Aesop by Planudes, and the beginning of Aesop’s Fables and Volume II continues with Aesop’s Fables and includes the Fables of Philelphe, Gabrias and Avienus. Modern binding; (frontispiece of vol. II somewhat chipped, otherwise clean and good). Rare and richly illustrated edition of Aesop’s fables, with extensive dialogue on the moral of each fable. Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde, a clergyman, put his mark on the Aesopic work by contributing a four-line rhyming verse at the end of each fable in italics. Bellegarde also added 18 fables of the Latin poet Philelphus and 37 fables based on Aesop by Gabrias and Avienus. The larger fables added are the “Battle of the Cats and the Rats,” and the “Battle of the Rats and the Frogs.” Thereafter follow five “Tales” of Aesop, taken from Plato’s dialogue “Protagoras,” another six “Poetical fables,” with Olympian Gods as protagonists, two more “Tales,” one taken from Herodot, and a last fable, taken from Gerbellius. The beautiful fable illustrations are by Georg Paul Busch; a Berlin copper-engraver who died in 1756. Rare early edition of Aesopic literature with several other didactic tales and author’s additions.

Boston: Eastburn's Press, 1844. 54pp, stitched into modern marbled wrappers. Light dusting, else Very Good. Originally printed in nine issues of the Boston Courier in opposition to annexation, this essay "discusses temperately the various arguments for and against annexation, especially those in Robert J. Walker's Letter of January, 1844. Adams states that although annexation would justify dissolution of the Union, the immediate policy of the Free States should be to continue their struggle against slavery. It appears from the text that this was published soon after the appointment of Calhoun as Secretary of State in March, 1844." Streeter. FIRST EDITION. Streeter 1468. Rader 41.
