It took over a year to print, and was partially set up many times before the printers achieved a satisfactory style. As originally planned, the book was to have no illustrations; and spaces were left at the beginning of all divisions for large script initials to be printed in vermilion. After the first initial was printed, however, the idea was abandoned because the letters were not of satisfactory design and because the whole effect was too spectacular; and the spaces left for initials were filled in with rough woodcuts made from very soft basswood" (Grabhorn Bibliography). Grabhorn Bibliography 138. Huntington Library, Great Books in Great Editions, p. 65. HBS 69292. $5,000.

Description
New York: Random House, 1940. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good+. Original cloth. 4to; pp. 297, illustrated in b/w throughout, with photographs, diagrams, and plans fo the general social concepts that developed through Geddes' stewardship of the FUTURAMA exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Spine a touch darkened, pastedowns foxed; overall, a very nice copy, much nicer than usual in the original fragile dust jacket, lightly worn with some quite light edge chipping and a short tear here and there. A legendary early treatise on the problems of modern transportation, this copy is inscribed "with love" and signed by Norman Bel Geddes in March of 1940 (the year of publication) at the top of the front pastedown. Bel Geddes designed the famous General Motors Pavilion for the 1939 NY World's Fair, which included the Highway and Horizons exhibit, more commonly known as "Futurama." He helped establish a new professional niche -- that of the "industrial designer," arguing for a closer relationship between engineering and design.

With an Original Preface and Notes by John C. Spencer. New York: Adlard and Saunders, 1838. xxx, 464 pp. Facsimile reprint, The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. 2019. ISBN 9781584772491. Hardcover. New. $37.95 * The first English-language edition published in 1838 translated by Henry Reeve, Esq. with Preface and notes by John C. Spencer. In 1831 Alexis de Tocqueville [1805-1859] and Gustave de Beaumont [fl.1835] traveled through the United States on behalf of the French government to study American prisons, which were renowned for their progressive and humane methods. They were pleased to accept this assignment because they were intrigued by the idea of American democracy. Tocqueville and Beaumont spent nine months in the country, traveling as far west as Michigan and as far south as New Orleans. Throughout the tour, they used their social connections to arrange meetings with several influential Americans in the worlds of politics, law, business, social reform and the arts. Tocqueville recorded his thoughts on the structure of the government and the judicial system, and commented on everyday people and the nation's political culture and social institutions. His observations on slavery, in particular, are impassioned and critical. These notes formed the basis of Democracy in America. This landmark work initiated a dialogue about the nature of democracy and the United States and its people that continues to this day.
