Rome: Nella Stamperia di Gio. Battista de Caporali, per andare all'Orso, 1729. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in later carta rustica. A fine, fresh copy on crisp paper. Very faint soiling to upper margin. A large historiated initial, decorative head- and tail-pieces. With the arms of Cardinal Polignac on the title page. A very rare account of the elaborate transformation of Piazza Navona to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV of France (1715-1774) and his royal consort María Leszczyńska (1703-1768). The Rococo painter Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1750), charged with staging the events, had the piazza “restored” to its ancient glory as the stadium of Domitian, the foundations of which are buried beneath the piazza and give the modern space its distinctive, oblong shape. The spectacle was captured by the Roman painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1765), who produced a painting of the Piazza in its glory, of which two copies exist. One is in the Louvre, the other in the National Gallery of Ireland. The piazza was transformed by the erection of magnificent columns, quadriform temples (all painted to look like marble), monumental statuary, and fountains that flowed with wine (which was distributed to the spectators). The center-piece of the scene, Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers; Borromini’s church of Sant’Agnese served as the imposing backdrop for this splendid display. All of these elements, including the inscriptions, the symbolism of the statuary, the royal blazons, the festoons of laurel, flowers, and flowers that unified the components, the torches and candelabra that illuminated the whole scene, the various instruments played, etc., etc. are described in detail. The performances are also described. Musicians played from elevated stages, delighting the crowd with song. There were fireworks (conducted by the papal bombardieri of Castel Sant’Angelo), a cavalry parade, and a dramatic performance written by the celebrated librettist Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782), with music by Leonardo Vinci (1690-1730). The performance took place in the French ambassador’s residence, Palazzo Altemps, at the northern end of the piazza. The final page of the account names the performers, the set designer, and the engineers in charge of the fireworks. The second part of the volume comprises sonnets composed in honor of the Dauphin, the boy’s mother, María Leszczyńska, and the French ambassador to the Vatican, Cardinal Melchior di Polignac.

Description
Financier of the Revolution forced into bankruptcy court: "Sixty days after date, I promise to pay unto Mr. Mathias Kurlin Junr or Order Thirteen Hundred & forty six Dolls & Sixty Seven Cents for value recd." ROBERT MORRIS. Autograph Document Signed, December 12, 1794. 1 p., 7⅛ x 3¾ in. On the document's verso is a note reading "Exhibited to us under the commission against Robert Morris, Philadelphia, 15th October 1801." Signed by John Hollowell and Thomas Cumpston, commissioners appointed to oversee the bankruptcy proceedings after Morris had languished in debtor's prison for three years. Historical Background Robert Morris (1734-1806), signer of the Declaration of Independence, merchant and land speculator, is best known for his role as financier for the Continental Congress. With the national government virtually bankrupt, Morris risked his own personal fortune by purchasing supplies for the army, pressuring the states for cash contributions and securing a major French loan to finance the Bank of North America. He spent his remaining years in various public positions, including senator of Pennsylvania. Morris speculated extensively in Western land after the war, forming the North American Land Co. with James Greenleaf and Jonathan Nicholson. Soon after, however, the land market collapsed and Morris was ruined. The final blow came in 1798, when a minor creditor's claim sent him to the Philadelphia debtor's prison. It has often been said that while George Washington was president, he felt he could not pardon his long-time friend, but visited Morris in debtor's prison as a show of support. That story is only half true. Morris didn't enter debtor's prison until 1798, two years after Washington's presidency, so Washington couldn't have pardoned him, but he did visit Morris in prison, where the latter remained for three years until his wife was able to bail him out.

Description
London: Printed for J. Brambles, A. Meggitt, and J. Waters, by H. Mozley, Market-place, Gainsborough, 1805. 24mo. (18 x 10.5 cm.), vii, [1], 282 pages. Frontispiece depicting a kitchen table laden with fish, flesh and fowl; one folding plate, depicting the stove fires; lacking the two plates of table settings. Stated “New Edition, in which are inserted some celebrated Receipts by other modern Authors”, in a handy small format. Originally published in 1769, The Experienced English Housekeeper was one of the most celebrated and popular of 18th century cookery books, placing the author in the same sphere as Hannah Glasse. In addition to her position as housekeeper to Lady Warburton, Elizabeth Raffald operated the Bull’s Head Pub in Manchester, and the King’s Head in Salford, both notable inns. She helped found a newspaper, operated a confectionery shop and ran a cooking school. All this after having provided her husband, John Raffald, with fifteen daughters (or sixteen depending on your source). Recipes include To Spin a Silver Web for Covering Sweet Meats, and Directions for a Grand Table. Lacking part of the first plate, showing the design of three stoves, and lacking both of the plates of table settings; a few pages edgeworn, not effecting text. Attractively rebound in full brown calf, with blind tooled boards and a red morocco title label. Near very good. [OCLC locates just one copy of this edition, at Oxford; Cagle 944-953 (earlier editions); Maclean, page 121ff. (earlier editions)].

Description
Havana, 1912. Good plus.. 196pp. Original printed front wrapper bound into 20th-century faux leather, paper boards, spine and front board gilt lettered. Contemporary ownership inscription and bookseller's ink stamp on title page. Lower corners of initial and final leaves repaired with tissue. Even tanning, occasional foxing, heavier to initial leaves. A scarce, contemporary account of what the authors term the "Guerra de Razas," also known as the 1912 Cuban War, an uprising by parts of the island's Afro-Cuban population demanding equal rights, which was brutally extinguished by government forces. The conflict had its roots in racial tensions between Cuba's Hispanic and Black populations after the reestablishment of self-government in 1909. Race-based political parties such as the Partido Independiente de Color had been established in the 1900s to fight for the civil rights of Black Cubans, but these groups were outlawed by the predominantly Hispanic government in 1910. The PIC continued to operate, however, and its leaders, Evaristo Esteñoz and Pedro Ivonet agitated for a rebellion that would force the government to reverse the law. When the uprising finally occurred in the eastern provinces of Cuba on May 20, 1912, it was met with extreme force, with contemporary accounts and eyewitnesses numbering the executed and massacred at anywhere between 2,000 and 6,000 people, including Esteñoz and Ivonet. The authors of the present work present their account from a pro-government perspective, but nevertheless make some attempt toward social history and analysis of the causes of conflict. The whole is photographically illustrated with numerous portraits of significant military figures. OCLC locates a small handful of copies in U.S. institutions.

One twelvemo volume (5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches; 137 x 85 mm). iv, [1, contents], [1, blank], 5-292 pp. We could find no copies of either the first American or First English at auction. We could find only one complete copy of the 1803 edition in a library. Contemporary full sheep. Spine ruled in gilt. Morocco spine label. Boards rubbed and scuffed. Pages with toning and soiling as usual with American paper of this time. Pages 214-215 with some soiling, obscuring a few words. Small tear from upper outer corner of dedication page (pg iv), not affecting text. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Early ink ownership signature on front free endpaper. Overall a very good copy. "[Pilkington] decided to take advantage of her experience as a teacher and her interest in education and to become a professional writer for children. She had already published a volume of poetry in 1796 and now turned her hand to writing the first of many morally didactic tales. Three were published by Elizabeth Newbery in 1797... Pilkington quickly branched out into educational literature and wrote a succession of works designed for the growing market of girls' boarding-schools, including A Mirror for the Female Sex: Historical Beauties for Young Ladies (1798), Biography for Girls (1798), and Mentorial tales for the instruction of young ladies just leaving school and entering upon the theatre of life (1802). Although she regarded the religious and moral dimensions of education as paramount, she echoed both Hannah More and Mary Wollstonecraft in arguing that girls should be given an intellectual education and in asserting that 'the female mind is certainly as capable of acquiring knowledge as that of the other sex' (A Mirror for the Female Sex, 61)." (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). HBS 68424. $1,000.

Description
Hollywood, 1954. Very Good. Lovely inscription by Liberace with a small vignette drawing of a grand piano beside his appropriately flamboyant signature. The inscription was to a Norma, and it reads: "To Lovely Norma, I think this is a most memorable Day for many reasons." The photo, framed by light card on the facing page, shows the young but easily recognizable Liberace smiling at Norma to his right, while Norma is looking straight at the camera, as is Andre Philippe, to Liberace's left. The photo is black and white and was surely taken by a roving photographer who worked the nightclub. Liberace in 1954 was at the height of his fame and popularity, which isn't to suggest that his star waned shortly thereafter, because it didn't. He had also played the Club Mocambo many times prior to 1954. We don't know, though, that he had a gig at the club the night of this photo. Andre Philippe, born in the Bronx as Everett Cooper (1927 to 2007), was an actor best known for his work on television, with a featured role in the series "Mr. Novak" in the early 1960s, guest roles on countless other television series, and smaller parts in many movies, some still well-known such as "Harry and Tonto". In the photo Andre Philippe looks like a young Desi Arnaz, and almost unrecognizable from his look during the core of his acting career. But from the signature there can be no doubt that he is one and the same. We do not know who Norma was. The photo and inscriptions are on the inside of a folded sheet photo sleeve from the club, with its name, location, and what was probably its logo on the front cover. Closed, the photo sleeve measures 17 by 21.5 cm. The photo, visible under its framing, is 11.5 by 16 cm. Light wear. Typical deterioration of the photo.

London: Souvenir Press, 1957. First Edition. 8vo. 22cm x 14.5cm. Publisher's green cloth. Dustjacket. Titled in gilt to spine, light wear to extremities, in a bright, clean dustjacket with some inoffensive wear to the edges and corners, and some minor soiling to the white rear panel. A very good copy with a little fraying around the edges. 218pp. Internally clean, with a central section of black and white photographs of various rituals, and indigenous peoples. A fascinating account of those people who were at the time referred to by Westerners as "Witch Doctors", what that term means to different cultures, and the role that such practitioners occupy in their respective societies. A good example of mid 20th century 'intruder anthropology'.

Description
Albany GA: BearManor Media. (c.2015). First Edition. Softcover. Fine. [a very nice, as-new book, with no discernible wear]. (Scripts from the Crypt, No. 3) Series Trade PB (B&W photographs, facsimiles) Everything -- and I really do mean everything -- you could possibly want to know about this 1951 Grade-B (optimistically) "outlandish monster melodrama." Includes: an introduction by John Landis; the full original screenplay; an article about the making of the film; a tribute to its screenwriter-director, Curt Siodmak; an essay on its music score (by Raoul Kraushaar); an interview with producer Herman Cohen; a timeline of the life and career of its star, Lon Chaney Jr.; a reproduction of the original pressbook; "and more" (if you can take any more). This book is ample proof (if any was needed) that there are no cinematic depths too low to be plumbed by film scholars; I personally won't be satisfied until every single film in the Medveds' historic book "The Fifty Worst Films of All Time" has been honored with its own lavishly-illustrated monograph. (Or maybe they already have, and I just haven't been paying attention.) ****NOTE that additonal postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy oversize paperback; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** .
