Description
Urbino: Domenico Frisolino, 1575. Hard cover. Very Good. Folio; [16], 278 pages. Title page and all text pages ruled in typographic border. Typographic ornament on title page, 18 historiated initials (some duplicates) showing putti with geometer's instruments against a background of Italian hill towns. Numerous geometric figures in text. Bound in c19 (?) full mint green sheep, with red leather title label lettered and tooled in gilt. Edges stained indigo. Binding somewhat scuffed, with upper joint cracked; spine darkened and scuffed. Early ownership inscription on title page, later bookplate on front pastedown. Few marginal notes in contemporary hand. Very light occasional foxing present. References: Moranti, #4 ("un vero capolavoro tipografico" p.14); Gamba 1386 ("Nobile edizione"); Adams, E-995;; Brunet, II, 1090; Graesse, II, 513; Thomas-Stanford, 42; Olschki, Choix, 6539 ("Traduction très estimée"). The first book printed in Urbino in the 16th century, and only the fourth overall. Urbino's presses lagged behind those of other Italian cities, due in part to Duke Federico's predilection for manuscripts. It seems Federico Commandino, the foremost mathematician of the generation before Galileo, had a press set up in his house. He hired in a printer, Domenico Frisolino, and there he published his translation into Italian of Euclid, based on his own Latin translation of 1572. Commandino died just as the sheets were coming off the press. His brother-in-law hastily attached a dedicatory letter (to Francesco Maria II della Rovere) explaining that Commandino wanted the text to be available to "all who are served by mathematics," that is, even those who do not understand classical languages. Euclid's text is glossed by Commandino's running commentary, and illustrated with figures.

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1944. First edition. ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY, WOODS HOLE, BY EMINENT EMBRYOLOGIST. 9 inches tall hardcover, green cloth binding, gilt title to spine, pictorial map of Cape Cod to endpapers, i-ix, 284 pp, illustrations. Very good in custom archival mylar cover. FRANK RATTRAY LILLIE (1870 – 1947) was an American zoologist and an early pioneer of the study of embryology. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Lillie moved to the United States in 1891 to study for a summer at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Lillie formed a lifelong association with the laboratory, eventually rising to become its director in 1908. His efforts developed the MBL into a full-time institution. Lillie was appointed an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago in 1900. He was named Chairman of the Department of Zoology in 1910 and Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences in 1931. His research there was instrumental in the development of the field of embryology. He identified the influence of potassium on cell differentiation and elucidated the biological mechanisms behind free-martins. Lillie was instrumental in founding the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and served as its first president.

Trenner 215. Mueller von Asow I, p. 358. Pipers Enzyklopadie des Musik Theaters 6, p. 89. Considered the work that would establish Strauss as the leading German opera composer of his time, Salome, in one act to Hedwig Lachmann's German translation of Oscar Wilde's play, was first performed in Dresden at the Hofoper on 9 December 1905. "With the colourful, chromatic Salome he found a new, modernist voice for the stage, one that resonated throughout a Europe preoccupied with the image of the sensual femme fatale. Within a year of its 1905 Dresden première, this succès de scandale had been performed in six German cities as well as Graz, Prague and Milan, and its fame quickly spread throughout Europe and the USA." Bryan Gilliam and Charles Youmans in Grove Music Online.
