Description
1885. BARNARD, George. The Theory and Practice of Landscape Painting in Water-Colours. Illustrated by a Series of Twenty-Six Drawings and Diagrams in Colour and Numerous Woodcuts. [8], 286, [2] pp. Illustrated with 26 chromolithographic plates and 69 text illustrations mainly from engravings, but including several from one-colour lithographs. Large 8vo., 262 x 175 mm, bound in the original red cloth. London & New York: George Routledge and Sons, 1885. New edition. The first edition was published in 1855. An important book for its full coverage of colour theory and painting materials, but also because of the high quality plates. Ruari McLean says, "On only one plate, no. 4, with twenty five panels showing harmonious arrangements of colour, does there appear to be any hand-colouring. Plates 22 and 23 might be sketches, or notes, by a French Impressionist, and are, in their way, among the most improbable examples of colour printing of the whole century." An unusually fine copy with the binding in fresh condition, and the interior bright, and without any of the foxing that mars most copies. Abbey Life 94 (the second edition). McLean, Victorian Book Design & Colour Printing, p. 192. The Book of Colour Concepts 516 cites first edition.

Description
South Bend, Indiana: Hering House Welfare League, 1947. Good. 11" x 8½". Stapled wrappers. Pp. 4. Good: horizontal crease to all leaves; lacking top staple, lightly toned. This is a rare program which honors the anniversary of an important educational and cultural center for the African American community of South Bend, Indiana, the Hering House. We learned how and why Hering House was founded from a 2016 article by Kevin Tidmarsh in Belt Magazine (https://beltmag.com/the-forgotten-legacy-of-buford-gordon/). Tidmarsh was discussing the 1922 book, The Ne*ro In South Bend: A Social Study, written by the Reverend B.F. Gordon. Gordon's book documented the early history and contemporary conditions of South Bend's African American residents. Tidmarsh pointed out that the book's publication had a nearly immediate impact in South Bend as it led directly to two white philanthropists, Frank and Claribel Hering, donating money for a community center for African Americans. Modeled after Chicago's Hull House, Hering House was dedicated in 1925 and served as an exceptionally important gathering place for African Americans in South Bend for nearly 40 years. This program marked Hering House's 22nd anniversary. Its first page lists the schedule of events for the celebration, along with lists of officers, directors and the board of trustees. Rare source material documenting an important African American community center, not found online or in OCLC. Indiana University South Bend holds a small collection of Hering House materials; it contains a few anniversary celebration programs, but not this year's.

Description
Washington DC: Printed by E. De Krafft, 1818. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Disbound wraps. Approx. 8.5" x 5.5". 26 pages. Folding table inside. Light toning to the text. John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War Department was refereed the Senate resolution "requesting the President of the United States to inform the Senate "what requisitions were made upon the contractors..B. G. Orr, contractor, has failed to furnish rations agreeable to his contract." This report contains contractual clauses and requisition information. From wikipedia: Benjamin Grayson Orr (1762–1822) was the fourth mayor of Washington, D.C., elected by the council of aldermen in 1817 and serving for two years. Orr, probably born in Virginia, was a grocer in Georgetown – which in the early 19th century was a separate town from Washington. He moved into the city in 1812 and was elected an Alderman, but resigned one year later and became a supplier to U.S. Army brigades in Ohio and Michigan.[1].
