Description
Japan c.[1703]. Original gray rubbed silk covers, a Japanese reprint of the 1663 Chinese map, neatly rebacked,127 x 137.5 cm., a few old mended worm holes, minor flaws, hand colored, folds down to 21.5 x 34 cm. R A R E FIRST & ONLY EDITION Translation of the Chinese Title: continued: "WITH THE WHOLE PICTURE OF THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY AND ALL ROADS." . Chinese pinyin title is: DA MING JIU BIAN WAN GUO, REN JI LU CHEN QUAN TU. . *** A marvelous and grand size example. The work basically shows the whole country and its surrounding areas. Minor tears, most repaired, some old stains & repaired worming, actually quite nice. Remarkable in its detail and features. It shows the Great Wall at the top, or Northern orientation, geographic features include: rivers, lakes, cities and villages, mountains are painted in green. With a list of foreign countries at the left margin, showing the distance in "Ri" or miles. Important administrative areas in red outline, islands named, the sea around the whole country is done in a stylistic wave pattern set in the middle of an ocean border. Includes China's East coast, Shanghai &c. . *** At the East are islands of the "Women, Long People, Hairy People" &c. Essentially a grand world map, with China occupying the center, other countries shown on the exterior of the map. With a list & explanation on Chinese cities at the bottom, with commentaries on each of the provinces to the right. European countries are shown to the West, each properly named. The whole map is hand-colored with gouache or pastel water colors. There are four marginal stamped cinnabar collector's seals. . *** CONDITION: The map was re-backed professionally a about 100 years ago. There is some loss in a couple of the folds, please see the scans to observe this, else some minor old worming but restored from the verso. Now solid and stable. . There are some old stains on the edges & in the folds, this does not penetrate to the front, if it does the color of the map ameliorates this. By and large a nice work in good plus condition. . Finding maps of this enormous size and subject are difficult, it goes without saying, that we can not always fine pristine examples that have resided in Japan where insects love to eat this kind of hand-made Washi paper. Seldom found for sale anywhere these days. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: This exact map has been cited and illustrated in: T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID 19TH CENTURY, plate #23, on pages 50-51. The Oda example is mostly without color, while ours is nicely hand-colored. *** Suitable for framing and wall display. Maps of this period, subject & grand size are exceptionally S C A R C E. . *** Actual scans (incl. one from the book of Oda's descriptive [Japanese] text) are posted to our website.

Description
JOHN GIBBON (1827-1896). John Gibbon was a Major General who fought in the Indian Wars the American Civil War, and the Great Sioux War. He fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and Second Battle of Bull Run. During his life, he published his famous Artillerists Manual and posthumously, Personal Recollections of the Civil War, and Adventures on the Western Frontier, along with many articles in magazines and journals. His writings typically center around his time in the West and his opinions on Native American government policies.Typescript. 5pgs. No date [circa mid 1870s]. No place. A typed outline of Rambles In The Rocky Mountains that was typed by either John Gibbon himself or his secretary. This series of articles was published in the American Catholic Quarterly Review in 1876 and included in a posthumously published book, Adventures on the Western Front, that depicts Gibbons time serving in the West during the 1870s. In this work, Gibbons short and concise writing style gives the reader glimpses into his life and shows how time in the West was spent. Gibbon discusses the Pikes Peak emigrants in the second chapter of this work, an event in the late 1850s where thousands of people left their homes to go to Pike Peak, Colorado for the gold rush they were experiencing. Later, he writes, First news of the battle of Bull Run, the first major battle of the Civil War. In chapter VII, he references the Great Sioux War of 1876, a war between the U. S. and Native Americans as the government wanted ownership over the Black Hills, a mountain range in South Dakota and Wyoming, that is now home to Mount Rushmore. His depictions of these important events are dispersed throughout the script, broken up with his day-to-day activities as a soldier, and descriptions of the West. The typescript is in very good condition with light stains on the first page.

Mr. Sayer & others in presenting that matter to your attention; I am calling Mr. Fields attention to an instrument for Deep Sea Sounding, without a line; its use will save time & money in ascertaining the bottom of the Pacific Ocean for laying his Cable from San Francisco to China. Volume 5 in the ambitious and well received 'Kingdom in the West' series. In a labor extending over several years, Roger Robin Ekins has collected Cannon's writings from the Western Standard and the editorials and articles of the opposition press, along with the young missionary's correspondence with Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Daniel H. Description
NY: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1957. First American edn. 8vo, pp. xx, 479. Index. With several illustrations. Brown cloth. Cover very slightly scuffed at edges, o/w a fine copy. From the library of Alta Rockefeller Prentice. The book concerns the claims by an individual sometimes referred to as Thomas Castro or as Arthur Orton, but usually termed "the Claimant", to be the missing heir to the Tichborne baronetcy. He failed to convince the courts, was convicted of perjury and served a long prison sentence. Roger Tichborne, heir to the family's title and fortunes, had disappeared after a shipwreck in 1854. His mother clung to a belief that he might have survived, and after hearing rumours that he had made his way to Australia, she advertised extensively in Australian newspapers offering a reward for information. In 1866 a butcher known as Thomas Castro from Wagga Wagga came forward claiming to be Roger Tichborne; although his manners and bearing were unrefined, he gathered support and travelled to England. He was instantly accepted by Lady Tichborne as her son, although other family members were dismissive and sought to expose him as an imposter.

Montlake, Seattle: Montlake, 2021. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 5x1x8. Wrapper lightly worn. 2021 Trade Paperback. 339 pp. Venus McGee, Draya Carter, and Jackie Benson are coworkers with a lot in common. They're smart, independent, driven, and deserving of recognition―certainly more than they've been handed by a demoralizing boss. He's the topic of conversation at their impromptu get-together after the company holiday party, where the threesome fantasizes about a life without him. There has to be an alternative to taking a deep breath and sucking it up. There is. It's just not the one they expected. When morning comes, Venus, Draya, and Jackie are blindsided by murder―a twist of fate that brings a startling new challenge to the table and forces them to navigate a hair-raising detour they never saw coming. For better and (unless they can help it) for worse, it's going to turn their world upside down. What starts as a necessary bond of mutual trust soon morphs into an empowering and galvanizing friendship that Venus, Draya, and Jackie need now more than ever.
