Description
Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1941. First Edition. First Printing. Small quarto (26cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; xii,355,[1]pp. Johnson's own copy, with his pictorial bookplate designed by Aaron Douglas (printed in black on cream wove paper, measuring 4.25" x 3") mounted to front pastedown. Modest external wear, a few faint scuffs to covers, mild dust-soil to text edges, with some softening and minute board exposure to corner tips; contents clean; Very Good+, lacking the scarce dustjacket. Sociological study of the Southern Counties, financed by the Julius Rosenwald Fund, in an effort to reform rural education. "In conversations among the various students it soon came about that if one reported the crop system and the degree of ruralization of a given county, it was at once possible to described with astonishing accuracy the "social conditions" that were to be expected: the kind of school system, the state of the public health, the economic order, the relations between the races. We found that crops, degree of ruralization, and certain other standard criteria were an index to many very significant characteristics. It was apparent, therefore, that if we could compile a comprehensive county index or statistical atlas of the South (by crops, industries, and degree of rurality) we would have an excellent guide to conditions which vitally affected education and all other social relationships throughout the region" (p.v). Johnson (1893-1956) was a prominent sociologist and college president, who played a pivotal role in the Harlem Renaissance in his role as editor of the National Urban League's journal Opportunity, where he published the work of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Zora Neale Hurston, and artist Aaron Douglas. "More quietly than Du Bois or Locke...Johnson exerted perhaps the longest lasting impact on Douglas. It was at Johnson's insistence that Ethel Ray Nance encouraged the artist's move to New York. From his helm at the Urban League's Opportunity magazine, Johnson, too, found illustration work for Douglas almost immediately. In addition, it was Johnson who, after gaining his position as the first black president of Fisk University, recruited Douglas to develop the arts program there, offering a position he held for more than three decades. Johnson often worked behind the scenes making opportunities for others. Douglas described him as someone who "understood how to make the way, how to get the next step, how to indicate the next stop for many of these younger people" (Earle, Susan. Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist, p.84). This bookplate is one of two that Douglas designed in the 1920s for Harlem Renaissance figures (the other being for Alain Locke) - an excellent example of his early, often imitated style, employing the silhouette of a female figure holding a banjo, flanked by palm fronds and angular buildings. Uncommon in commerce; the only example of this bookplate known to us was offered at Swann's African American Art sale (April 4, 2024). 81731.

Description
Philadelphia: Collins, 1860. FIRST EDITION. With 3 numbered lithograph plates. Half morocco over boards, spine labels; interior very good with only minor foxing on last plate. First edition of Brown-Séquard’s investigation of spinal cord transection. In this series of lectures he defines the relative function of the posterior and anterior cord sections and their relationship to other neral pathways, and shows how trauma to transverse hemisection of the spinal cord can lead to motor paralysis and hyperesthesia at different points of the body. In this discovery, he was one of the first to describe the effects of traumatic spinal shock, and his research led to further study of spinal injuries and paralysis. Brown-Séquard (1817–1894) was a Mauritius-born physiologist and pathologist who specialized in investigative medicine. He traveled widely, practicing medicine in Britain, the United States, and France. He was appointed a professor of medicine at the Collège de France teaching at both Paris and Nice. In addition to his work on the spinal cord, Brown-Séquard also researched the gastric system, was a pioneer in endocrinology, and continued to experiment with treatments for nervous system ailments including epilepsy. DSB, II, pp. 524-6; Fulton and Wilson, Selected Readings in the History of Physiology, p. 297; Garrison, History of Neurology, pp. 421-23; Heirs of Hippocrates, 1841; Spillane, Doctrine of the Nerves, pp. 269-73.

Brooklyn, NY: Y. Benz, 1997. Softcover. VG. 1 portfolio (13 sheets) : chiefly bw illustrations. "Yarrott Benz was born in 1954 in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a B.S. degree from Vanderbilt University studying art history and poetry and received a M.F.A. degree in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. Benz's interest in photography was first stimulated at Vanderbilt. While studying Southern artists such as Eudora Welty, Walker Evans and William Christenberry, he received a grant to write and direct a short film. For fifteen years, Benz concentrated on sculpture, working and showing in Italy and the United States. In 1992, he returned to photography, heavily influenced by those intervening years. His current work draws upon the spatial and surface relationships of sculpture, the poetic use of image and metaphor, and elemental references from art history. He lives in New York and teaches photography, sculpture and art history at Friends Seminary in Manhattan."

Description
New York: Scribners [The Scribner's Book Store], 1938. Cloth. A classy catalogue issued by The Scribner Book Store, which was the grandest of Fifth Avenue book stores on the street level of the publisher's landmark building headquarters. The retail space is now landmarked, but the book store closed in 1989, and its antiquarian book department was folded well before that. The catalogue showcases what would be regarded in the trade then and now as high points -- the first editions or manuscripts of the most famous, or influential, of books or music scores -- Madame Bovary, Das Kapital, The Jungle Book, Vita di Benvenuto Cellini, the score of Boris Godounov, etc. Some of the offerings, though, would not be so considered today we shall not cite those lest we ruffle admirers of those particular works. The most expensive item is Robert Browning's Pauline, for $12,500, followed by a manuscript copy of Mozart's Haffner Symphony, $10,000, while most items are three figures, a few, two. The fun to be had isn't so much in seeing the low nominal dollar amount -- everyone knows that the dollar then is not a dollar now -- but at gasping at the changes in relative values among these items. 4to. 28 by 18.5 cm. 55 leaves, not including blanks. 50 numbered items showcased, with a description on the left (carrying a number at the bottom), a photo of the book taking up the entirety of the facing page. Three leaves at end with header "Memorandum" and blank below for the catalogue user to make notes if so desired. The catalogue was definitely meant to have a look of permanence as well as be in keeping with the rarefied material the store was advertising, and given that Scribner's business was primarily publishing, burnish the prestige of that as well. The design of the catalogue exudes taste, with its wide gold paper pastedown carrying the title. A statement is also made by the generous spread lavished on each item. These aren't mere books, it is telling us, but cultural monuments that deserve our reverence. The binding has light wear -- light edge and corner rubbing, Otherwise tight, clean.

This clear and compelling introduction to social phenomenology examines the experiential features of the basic things comprising our life-world, namely me, you, abstract others (enemies, communities, and associations), and attributes of the lived-body (emotions, pain, and pleasure). Each of these entities is phenomenologically described, with the aim of reducing reports of personal experiences and other primary documents to the presumed prototypical experience of the thing in question its ideal essence. Another aim of this study is to sociologically account for how the various entities of the life-world have been accomplished, that is, how the prototypical experiences of the things in question have come to be. By showing the life-world to be our joint project rather than a fixed, unalterable coherency, this volume destabilizes our naive attitude towards the things of the world. Examples are drawn from the author's own research on issues such as violence, religion, health, and race; from classic and contemporary anthropological research; and from the works of some of the most innovative philosophers of the twentieth century. This study actually does phenomenology instead of merely arguing for its necessity and will appeal to both social scientists and philosophers.(Publisher).
