Description
Paris: Henry Cremenitz, 1886. First edition. Hardcover. g- to near fine condition. Folios. Red cloth over grey paper portfolios, with black lettering on the front covers. String-tied. 97 loose plates. This remarkable and historically important collection is comprised of 113 original b/w photographs taken between 1883-1886 in the area of Northern Vietnam by French medical doctor, explorer and award-winning photographer Charles-Édouard Hocquard (1853 -1911). Hocquard first volunteered in 1883, as a military medical doctor for the Tonkin Campaign. While there he used his position to extensively photograph the country. These images are significant in that they serve as invaluable visual documentation of and offer insight into the daily lives the people, the culture and landscape in the area of the Red River Delta and its surroundings, in Northern Vietnam (then known as Tonkin), as it was in the second half of the 19th century. Most notably, many of these images were taken during the period of France's "Tonkin Campaign" (1883-1886), and the Sino-French War (1884-1885). The French victory during these conflicts ultimately resulted in the beginning of the French colonial period in Vietnam, and the formation of the unified French Indochina. The wide range of images here include portraits, war images, street scenes, landscapes, architecture, still lifes, artisans and craftsmen, musicians and performers, governmental officials, diplomats, soldiers (French, Vietnamese and Chinese), and a number of gruesome images of beheadings and executions. Cities, towns and areas shown include: Hanoi (w/ the citadel), Son Tay, Ninh Bình, Lang Son, Bac Ninh, Nam Dinh, Phu Xa (Dong Dan), Hong Hoa and Dong Son. Although Hocquard's photographs of Tonkin during this period are known to number at least 250 images (and likely many more), publisher Henry Cremenitz offered a total of 240 images* to the public, starting sometime around 1886-1887. It is likely that these images were purchased at the discretion of the buyer. Those who bought a significant amount could have them housed in a custom portfolio. It is known that 117 of Hocquard's images of Tonkin were exhibited at the 1885 Antwerp International Exposition, and won him the gold medal. Although it is not known which images were shown, it can be assumed that many of the exhibited photographs are present in this collection. Some plates contain a single larger image measuring 9 1/2 x 7", while others contain two smaller plates each measuring 6 1/4 x 4". All images are numbered and include a text caption in French, at the bottom, set within each image. All plates are printed with a decorative Chinese-style border and publisher's credits in red. Portfolios with some scratches and stains as well as light rubbing to extremities. The front covers of all one portfolio has a few period notes in ink at the top. Plates throughout with occasional stains, age toning and/or rubbing and minor chipping to extremities, almost entirely confined to the margins. Most images throughout are still clean and vibrant. Portfolios in good- to very good condition. Plates in good+ to near fine condition overall. * A published catalog of images was issued by publisher Henry Cremenitz, naming all available plates in order. A copy of this list accompanies one of the collections held at the Biblioteque Nationale du France, and has been digitally scanned. It can be viewed on their online database. Large images: 81 Small images: 32 (on 16 plates, 2 per plate) Total plate count: 97 Total image count: 113 There are only 5 collections of these extremely scarce images held worldwide as recorded on OCLC none of which contain the full 240 images: - 3 collections at the Bibliteque Nationale du France (2 of which are scanned) - A small collection at the Bibliothèque centrale du service de santé des Armées (Army Health Service, Central Library) - The largest collection is held at the Getty (200 images).

Binding tight, pages unmarked. An excellent copy of Dodoens's 127 medical lectures edited and annotated by Sebastian Egbertsz: a rare edition bringing together Dutch medical knowledge of 16th and 17th centuries. REMBERT DODOENS {1517 – 1585) was a Flemish physician and botanist, also known under his Latinized name Rembertus Dodonaeus. He has been called the "father of botany." Dodoens was born Rembert van Joenckema in Mechelen, then the capital of the Spanish Netherlands in 1517. His father was one of the municipal physicians in Mechelen and a private physician to Margaret of Austria, Governor of the Netherlands, in her final illness. Rembert later changed his last name to Dodoens. Dodoens was educated at the municipal college in Mechelen before beginning his studies in medicine, cosmography and geography at the age of 13 at the University of Leuven. He graduated with a licentiate in medicine in 1535, and as was the custom of the time, began extensive travels in Europe till 1546, including Italy, Germany, France, and a stay in Basel 1542–1546. In 1548, Dodoens followed in his father's footsteps by becoming one of the three municipal physicians in Mechelen together with Joachim Roelandts and Jacob De Moor. In 1575–1578, he was the court physician of the Holy Roman emperor Maximilian II and his successor Austrian emperor Rudolph II in Vienna. In 1582, he was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Leiden. He died in Leiden in 1585, and was buried at Pieterskerk, Leiden. SEBASTIAEN EGBERTSZ (1563 – 1621), alias Sebastianus Egberti, was a professor of anatomy at the Atheneum Illustre in Amsterdam. He was a member of the Raed of Amsterdam from 1602 to 1618 and burgomaster in 1606 and 1608. He was the subject of the oldest known painting of an anatomy lesson. Anatomy lessons were a social event in the 17th century, taking place in lecture rooms that were actual theatres, with students, colleagues and the general public being permitted to attend on payment of an entrance fee. The spectators are appropriately dressed for this social occasion. The Amsterdam Historical Museum has a large collection of paintings of anatomy lessons, painted when surgeons followed the popular sixteenth century trend for group portraits. The very first, a painting of an anatomy lesson given by Sebastiaen Egbertsz de Vrij, was painted by Aert Pietersz (1550 - 1612) in 1601-1603. In this picture all of the master surgeons are gathered fraternally around the dissecting table, and Doctor Sebastiaen Egbertsz. is just about to begin the anatomy lesson. The picture recalls sixteenth-century group portraits of fraternities and civic guards, this time, however, the traditional banquet has been replaced by an anatomy lesson as the connecting element in the composition. The discreet placement of the cadaver on the table confirms that the sitters were interested primarily in their likenesses. Every single gaze is directed at the viewer. A second depiction of Dr. Egbertsz was painted by Nicolaes Pickenoy (1588 – 1656). The earliest picture ascribed to the artist is "Dr. Sebastiaen Egbertz de Vrij's Osteological Presentation" of 1619, now in Amsterdam Historisch Museum. Around 1638 he bought the house next to Rembrandt van Rijn, a house that was the center of Amsterdam portraiture for decades. In 1639 Rembrandt returned to the neighbourhood as he bought the house next to Pickenoys, on the site of the present day Rembrandthuis.

Description
Minneapolis: Walker Art Center; New York: Hudson Hills, 2003. FIRST EDITION. Numerous black and white photographic illustrations, plus 536 full-color prints. Publisher’s cloth, titles in silver, original photographic illustrated dust jacket; in excellent condition. First edition of this new work covering all of Motherwell’s prints. This catalogue raisonné, with a new text, chronology and bibliography, does contain a concordance referencing prints which were included in his earlier catalogue raisonné. It also contains an essay on Motherwell’s print-making history. Motherwell (1915-1991), abstract artist and print-maker, was the youngest of the New York school of artists that included Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning. His work often touched on political and social events and movements. And unlike his abstract expressionist colleagues, Motherwell became a renowned and celebrated print-maker. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions and retrospectives.
