[New York]: not published., 1843 - `45. Unique.. Three quarter calf with marbled bds... A very good copy; some scuffing to the binding.. 4to, appx. 300 pages. Ephraim Clark attended the 1843 lectures of V Mott. He also attended the lectures of CR Gilman in 1844 and 1845. The volume offered here is appx. 300 pages in length. The Gilman lectures are recorded in shorthand; the Mott lectures in regular script. Each occupies about half the volume. Preceding the lectures are about ten pages of notes for cases introduced by doctors Post, Parker, and Buck. Mott's course of surgical lectures is an ambitious and aggressive approach to medicine and surgery. The cases are complex and Mott, whose opinions and statements are recorded by Clark, is often incorrect in his conclusions and observations; this is especially so when discussing neuro-surgical procedures. A marvelous record by one of the foremost surgeons of the period. Kelly & Burrage, 468 and 880.

A clean, sharp copy, crisp and VG+ to Near Fine in its pictorial stapled wrappers, with very light creasing along the upper rear tip. Over 55 pages all told, each boasting multiple photographs --a number of them in color-- of Asian exotica, from "Victory dresses of imported cotton crepe" to "Japanese Hand-painted Writing Paper". Tissue guard protects the frontispiece. Rare edition of Gammer Gurton, which was first published in 1784 by Joseph Ritson. This edition features not only much of Mother Goose, but other rhymes as well, and include two about King Arthur. And some rhymes have words that vary from the accepted norm. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. Threescore men, and threescore more, Cannot place Humpty Dumpty as he was before. OCLC dates this edition as of about 1846, and credits Walter and George Mason as the wood engravers for Webster's drawing. This copy is one of the many variants, being bound in cream colored wrappers, black and white illustrations and no publisher's ads. This copy comports to variants A - J in the Renier collection. A fine copy in publisher's stiff wraps. .

From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume I (1). (Betts: 7-25). First edition.The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having Johannes Hermann Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames with many excellent annotations, thorough coverage of news from around the world, plus book reviews and an endgame column by Horwitz. Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Wilhelm Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy.Dino Ruggieri was born in, a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri's family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from his birth city. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in his birth city, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 at the age of 88.Condition:Corners bumped, some foxing and age toning, Ruggieri's stamp to front end paper, without the original wrappers else a very good copy of a scarce item.

First edition in book form, one of 205 copies, quarto size, 22pp., signed by Brother Antoninus, with prospectus. A heart-wrenchingly beautiful paean by one famous poet, Brother Antoninus (William Everson, 1912-1994), to another, John Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) upon his death. "The great tongue is dried. / The teeth that bit to the bitterness / Are sheathed in truth. / For the poet is dead..." For those who may not know, the Auerhaun Press was founded by Dave Haselwood, who relates its beginnings in the opening pages of the "Auerhahn Press Bibliography" thus: "During the Summer of 1958 I drifted around San Francisco talking endlessly with painters such as Robert LaVigne and Jesse Sharpe & poets Lamantia, McClure, Wieners and reading all the live poetry & prose I could get my hands on. It was at this time that it occurred to me that the press could mean a great many things, some personal, some in a larger context: - I had reached the point where complete physical involvement in something important to me was absolutely necessary. The press could fill that requirement" (pp. 5-6). Andrew Hoyem joined the Press and became a partner; his meticulous attention to detail and skill at design and layout are evident here, which would become hallmarks of his work at the Arion Press. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter purple leather over ivory paper-covered boards, white paper spine label with gilt lettering, title page in purple and black, the introduction ("Note") and poem both with a two-line purple initial capital, each stanza of the poem interspersed with a small purple circle, signed by Brother Antoninus on the blank following the last page of the text; binding quarto size (10 3/4" by 8 1/8"), unpaginated with twelve leaves; one of 205 copies, unnumbered. The dust wrapper of plain white, the prospectus a single sheet folded once to four pages, an illustration on the front page in purple by Philip Van Aver, text on the third page with purple initial capitals, the second and final pages blank, measuring 8 9/16" by 5 1/2" when closed. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine and could likely be deemed fine, the boards clean other than light offsetting where the paper meets the leather and a tiny speck at the fore-edge bottom corner of the front board, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some light offsetting to the paste-down endpapers and a few very small spots of foxing to the same, else fine. The dust wrapper a bit better than very good, mostly clean other than a few light, stray marks, light edgewear mostly at the head and tail, but with a fair amount of sunning to the spine and back panel; the prospectus fine, clean, utterly without wear or soil. ___CITATION: Auerhahn Press bibliography, no. 24; Bartlett and Campo, no.
