Butts had supported the Free Soil Party and the "Barnburner" or antislavery wing of the Democratic Party. But during the War he consistently opposed the Lincoln administration. He believed the War was wrong, "and that nothing but evil could result from it, so far as the nation was concerned" [web site of Prabook]. Butts argues that binding succeeding generations to the debts contracted by a prior generation is "monstrous; it is abhorrent to the laws of God, and utterly subversive of the inalienable Rights of Man." In the next 100 pages he tells us why this is so. Sabin 9680.
