Description
Evans writes to Henry James biographer Leon Edel in a two page Autograph Letter Signed on one 8vo sheet of "The Century Association" stationery, New York City, Feb. 9, 1966. In 1966, Evans' photographic study of New York City subway riders was published. "Many Are Called," (1938-41) was photographed with hidden camera, first published almost 30 a after the images were captured and reissued in 2004. He writes, "May I intrude upon your scholarship if it extends to Henry James senior. I want to use a quotation which F. O. Matthiessen gives partially on p. 13 of 'The James Family' and I have no idea where to find it. Matthiessen writes, 'probably James best-known remark is that "to a right-minded man" a crowded horse-car is "the nearest approach to heaven upon earth"...." Evans explains he seeks the exact quotation noting that, "F. O. M. does not give a hint of his source...knowing your erudition I do hope you may have in mind...do not take down any books yourself for my quest. I'll do that..." He signs in full, "Walker Evans." Evans found the actual quote and used it in his photographic portraits of New York City riders titled, "Many Are Called." The correct quote reads: "To a right-minded man, a crowded Cambridge horse car is the nearest approach to heaven upon earth." [Walker Evans, "A Penitent Spy," Rathbone, 2000]. Evans left his post as editor of Fortune Magazine in 1965 and joined the faculty of Yale University.

Description
Three leaves, two 8 x10 sheets, and one 5x10, text on all sides, and comes with typed transcripts. Normal aging and browning, and a few tears at folds. The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark, New Jersey, who was the son of English immigrants, and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal at the time these letters were written. The letters talk about the desolation of the Virginia countryside. "Not a fence or a decent house is to be seen for miles… the black remains of Camp fires with the filth of the many camps of both armies are seen on most every farm. I tell you, Va. is suffering for her folly." The letters are from Alexandria and Stafford Court House, Virginia. See guide to Roden family papers at the William L. Clements Library.

Wien: Universal Edition [PN U.E. 5669], 1924. STEUERMANN, Eduard 1892-1964 (arr.). Folio. Full dark green cloth, titling gilt to spine. 1f. (title, instrumentation), 3-40 pp. Together with: A copy of the program for the first staged American performance of the work, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on Tuesday April 22 with Leopold Stokowski conducting; the evening included a performance of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. Large octavo. 4 pp. Together with a program in the League of Composers series dated February 2 announcing the April 22 concert with markings in red and lead pencil indicating that the owner may have been a music critic. Housed in pocket laid down to rear pastedown. Binding slightly rubbed. Small tape repair and musicseller's handstamp to title; first signature split; a few small dampstains to edges. First Edition of this arrangement, second issue (lacking printer's note to p. 40). Rufer (E), p. 36-37. GA B/6/3, pp. 88. Die glückliche Hand [The Hand of Fate], a drama with music in one act to a libretto by the composer, was first performed in Vienna at the Volksoper on 14 October 1924, conducted by Fritz Stiedry. "This work was begun in 1910, but much of the music, including the first and last of the four scenes, was not composed until 1912-13. Like its companion piece, Erwartung, it contains only one singing character. It is shorter, lasting only 20 minutes or so, but the action is far more complex, involving two mimed roles, a chorus and elaborate scenic effects synchronized with constantly changing coloured lighting. This last feature was also used by Kandinsky in Der gelbe Klang, but Schoenberg did not know about it at the time. His conception coincides with his own most intense period of activity as a painter." O.W. Neighbour in Grove Music Online. Pianist and composer Eduard Steuermann was one of the central figures in Schoenberg's circle. He played the piano part in several first performances of Schoenberg's works, including Pierrot Lunaire and the Piano Concerto. From 1938 on he lived in the United States.

Description
New York: Stanford and Swords, 1847. Original printed yellow front wrapper. Stitched. 47, [1 blank] pp. Lightly foxed, Good+. The author, Samuel Chase, Bishop Philander Chase's nephew, dedicates his pamphlet "to the Bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States." Someone had written a nasty, anonymous attack ["even its authorship is enshrouded in the obscurity of the grave"] on Bishop Chase, entitled, 'A reply to A plain statement for the consideration of the friends of the Protestant Episcopal church in the diocese of Illinois, the Rt. Rev. Philander Chase, D.D., bishop; drawn up some years ago, but most proper for the present time, by one who now rests from his labors; with notes by Observer.' Bishop Chase had expended much effort in establishing Jubilee College: the hit-piece asserted that the College's "legal ownership will be in the Bishop's heirs at law." This lie is buttressed "by allegations the most calumnious, statements the most false, and insinuations the most uncharitable and cruel." Sabin 12208.
