[Japan]: at end (in trans.): “copied 1842.” Japanese cities have always been plagued by terrible fires. Regarding Edo, “the wooden construction of all of the city and the narrow lanes of commoner quarters made fire a devastating experience, and it came sufficiently frequently to be called ‘the flowers of Edo.’ Fires were no respecters of status and rank, and when driven by winter winds in the dry season they roared through the city.…In the 268 years of Tokugawa rule, the Tosa ‘upper’ yashiki (at ‘Blacksmith Bridge’) suffered eighteen fires, and the Shiba middle residence burned twelve times. Four of these were citywide conflagrations. Merchant areas burned thirty-one times in two centuries, and even the shogun’s castle suffered major damage seven times.”–Jansen, The Making of Modern Japan (Harvard: 2000), p. 151. This wonderfully detailed scroll is a record of the Great Meiwa Fire of 1772 in Edo, one of the three most severe fires of the Edo era, with a 30-square-mile section of the city destroyed (including an estimated 178 temples and shrines, 127 daimyo residences, 878 non-official residences, 8705 houses of bannermen, and 628 blocks of merchant dwellings). Almost 15,000 people died, and another 4,000 went missing. The fire was deliberately set by a Buddhist priest of the Daien-ji Temple on the eastern side of the Meguro River. Because of the regularity of such fires, the city of Edo organized 48 brigades of trained firefighters, with each group having a specific name after the old i ro ha alphabet. Our remarkable scroll consists of one enormously long panorama, which can be divided into three sections: the alarm, the actual fire, and the aftermath. In the first long scene, we are clearly in a shopping area, with numerous merchants’ stores and warehouses (kura). We see some of the residents and the trained fire brigade men (hikeshi) rushing to the fire. A man on horseback is cantering through the streets, raising the alarm. The firefighters carry tools primarily of the building trades: ropes, saws, mauls, and the tobiguchi, the famous “fireman’s hook.” Other residents and their servants and staff prepare for the oncoming fire: each residence has a water barrel in front, ready for such an occasion. We see both buke hikeshi 武家火消 (samurai firefighters) and machibikeshi 町火消 (merchant firefighters). As we proceed to the actual fire, we pass by a tall fire tower, with men at the top observing the fire. A man is reinforcing a kura, supposedly fireproof, with further reinforcements of mud. The following scenes are all action: merchants preparing for the worst, servants removing merchandise, firefighters gathering and organizing their equipment in a staging area, water being drawn from wells, men removing wooden roof shingles, the elderly being carried away, statues being carried from temples, a congested bridge with people fleeing the fire and the firemen struggling to go in the opposite direction, workers in a walled mansion removing valuables, people on roofs removing flying embers, firefighters carrying the portable pump (ryūdosui) known as the “water-spewing dragon,” evacuated storefronts, etc. The second long scene shows the firefighters in action: buckets of water being filled, firefighters climbing and descending ladders, men removing embers from roofs, and the conflagration itself, vividly depicted in rich red colors for the fires themselves and gray tones for the considerable smoke. And, then, as we proceed, we see the resulting devastation, with almost nothing surviving. This section is simply horrific. The firemen survey the landscape and go through the area putting out the numerous smaller fires. Government officials gather to assess the damage. We see firemen from different companies in a brawl. The final scene shows the beginnings of the reconstruction of the area. Carpenters have brought in building materials, houses and shops are being rebuilt, merchants have reoccupied their surviving shops and restocked, residents are using carts to bring back their possessions, firefighters are marching across a bridge in celebration, a vendor is selling skewered snacks by the river, etc. Life resumes…until the next fire. We should emphasize that throughout this long scroll, the artist has provided enormous detail of the shops, their contents, and the varied activities of the residents and firemen. At the end, we find the following manuscript note (in trans.): “The artist Ishikawa Kei’unsai Yuitomo copied these images from a scroll in Autumn 1819. In Autumn 1826, the artist Hasegawa Settei [1813/19-82] copied Ishikawa’s scroll — then owned by the Saito family. And in mid-December 1842, Etsuzan Fujiwara Saidō Setsudō copied Hasegawa’s scroll.” We do not understand the chronology of the manuscript note, as Hasegawa was surely too young to execute this scroll in 1826. We do note that the National Diet Library attributes its rather similar scroll to Hasegawa as well. In fine condition. Some careful repairs and a few fill-ins. Preserved in a recent wooden box.

The usual suits are replaced with "National Emblems" including blue Federal eagles, blue 13-star shields, red stars, and red American flags. Jacks are replaced by majors, Queens by the Goddess of Liberty, and Kings are replaced by colonels. The ace of eagles is a large illustration with publisher's imprints as well. Backs of cards are printed in blue with a shield, flags, a star with the letters "US," an anchor and oak leaves and acorns. Housed together in the original pull-top box. Box embellished on the front with an images of the Goddess of Liberty and the words " National Emblems!! Something New in the Card World! Time for a Change! Foreign Emblems Used Long Enough in the U.S." The back side of the box reads "THE AMERICAN CARD CO. Cards are in very good to about fine condition, with just a mild amount of finger soiling and toning. The 7 of Stars card with a small half-inch closed tear. Box is a bit toned and with some minor chips. With a "2-cent" George Washington stamp affixed to inner lip of the box. Stamp has been canceled with the date "1864." Overall an about fine collection of Civil War playing cards. HBS 68782. $4,500.

"Following a suggestion made by the experimenter Martin Block, who was his room-mate at a conference in 1956 (at Rochester, in New York), Richard Feynman made the heretical proposal to the meeting that the theta and tau are different states of the same particle, which itself has no definite parity, and that parity is not always conserved. The idea was quickly taken up by Chen Ning Yang and Tsung Dao Lee, who showed that parity is not conserved in the weak interaction; their theory was immediately tested and proved correct by Chien Shiung Wu, and Yang and Lee received the Nobel Prize for their work in 1957- one of the quickest such awards ever made" (Gribbin, Q is for Quantum). (p3) "The great Mass of an Army consists of Men of such Dispositions that if they obtain more than they actually need of military supplies the Surplus will be wasted. Besides, whatever is redundant tends directly to impede the Movements of an Army and obstruct its operations, and will be abandoned without much scruple." (p6) Decius Wadsworth (1768-1821) was born in Connecticut and graduated from Yale University in 1785. President George Washington appointed him as a captain in the Artillerist and Engineer Corps in 1794. Promoted to major in 1800, he supervised the rebuilding of Fort Nelson in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1802 and served as acting Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy from 1803 to 1805. In 1812, he became the first Commissary General (later Chief) for the newly formed United States Army Ordnance Department. In 1817, he developed a cipher system based on a design by Thomas Jefferson that was improved and used until the end of World War II. Wadsworth resigned due to illness in June 1821. Historical Background Just before the War of 1812 began, Congress organized the Ordnance Department as a distinct branch of the Army. Colonel Decius Wadsworth became the first Commissary General of Ordnance. During the War of 1812, Wadsworth streamlined the management of ordnance materiel and drew on the best West Point graduates to staff the armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry and the growing number of arsenals. They conducted industrial experiments in metallurgy, chemistry, and allied engineering fields, which encouraged technological innovations. On February 15, 1815, Congress passed and President James Madison signed An Act for the better regulation of the Ordnance Department, which staffed the department more fully with 44 officers and as many men as the Colonel deemed necessary. The Department standardized weapons and rationalized the procurement and delivery of ordnance and related materials. On March 2, 1821, despite Wadsworth's objections, President James Monroe signed An Act to reduce and fix the military peace establishment of the United States, which merged the Ordnance Department into the Artillery Department. (In April 1832, the separate department was reestablished.) Excerpts From second part of Wadsworth's proposal, suggesting an alternative section to a Congressional bill to merge Ordnance into the Artillery Department: "the following … will be better as obviating much Dispute and Uncertainty respecting the Duties Functions and Prerogatives of the Ordnance Department… Sec 2. And be it further enacted, That the Corps of Ordnance shall be retained in Service, on the same Footing as is provided by the Act of Congress of the 8. Feby 1815, reducing the Number of its Officers to 1. Colonel 1 Lieut Colonel one Major 6 Captains 6 first 6 second and 6 third Lieutenants" (p1) "It is important to have it distinctly understood and expressed that the Act of Feby 8 1815 shall remain unrepealed, and that any changes made at present extend no further than to reduce the Numbers of the Officers or Men. The Reason is that the principal Duties of the Ordnance Department are stated and defined by the said Act of Feby 1815, and Authority is vested in the Colonel of Ordnance to make Purchases and Contracts under the Direction of the Secretary of War, and the Chief of the Department was intended by that Act to be made responsible for the Administration of the Department. By repealing that Act his Responsibility would cease" (p3) Excerpt from the 1815 Act: "it shall be the duty of the colonel of the ordnance department to direct the inspection and proving of all pieces of ordnance, cannon balls, shot, shells, small arms, and sidearms, and equipments, procured for the use of the armies of the United States; and to direct the construction of all cannon and carriages, and every implement and apparatus for ordnance, and all ammunition wagons, travelling forges, and artificers' wagons; the inspection and proving of powder, and the preparation of all kinds of ammunition and ordnance stores. And it shall also be the duty of the colonel, or senior officer of the ordnance department, to make all estimates, and, under the direction of the secretary for the department of war, to make contracts and purchases, for procuring the necessary supplies of arms, equipments, ordnance, and ordnance stores … That to ensure system and uniformity in the different public armories, they are hereby placed under the direction of the ordnance department."

The director comments about Jane Wyman's Oscar for her performance in his 1948 film, "Johnny Belinda." The letter is from a correspondence of Clifton Webb letters.
